ROS are a group of small reactive molecules that play critical roles in the regulation of various cell functions and biological processes. In the vascular system, physiological levels of ROS are ...essential for normal vascular functions including endothelial homeostasis and smooth muscle cell contraction. In contrast, uncontrolled overproduction of ROS resulting from an imbalance of ROS generation and elimination leads to the development of vascular diseases. Excessive ROS cause vascular cell damage, the recruitment of inflammatory cells, lipid peroxidation, activation of metalloproteinases and deposition of extracellular matrix, collectively leading to vascular remodelling. Evidence from a large number of studies has revealed that ROS and oxidative stress are involved in the initiation and progression of numerous vascular diseases including hypertension, atherosclerosis, restenosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Furthermore, considerable research has been implemented to explore antioxidants that can reduce ROS production and oxidative stress in order to ameliorate vascular diseases. In this review, we will discuss the nature and sources of ROS, their roles in vascular homeostasis and specific vascular diseases and various antioxidants as well as some of the pharmacological agents that are capable of reducing ROS and oxidative stress. The aim of this review is to provide information for developing promising clinical strategies targeting ROS to decrease cardiovascular risks.

The ability to efficiently analyze the activities of biological neural networks can significantly promote our understanding of neural communications and functionalities. However, conventional neural ...signal analysis approaches need to transmit and store large amounts of raw recording data, followed by extensive processing offline, posing significant challenges to the hardware and preventing real-time analysis and feedback. Here, we demonstrate a memristor-based reservoir computing (RC) system that can potentially analyze neural signals in real-time. We show that the perovskite halide-based memristor can be directly driven by emulated neural spikes, where the memristor state reflects temporal features in the neural spike train. The RC system is successfully used to recognize neural firing patterns, monitor the transition of the firing patterns, and identify neural synchronization states among different neurons. Advanced neuroelectronic systems with such memristor networks can enable efficient neural signal analysis with high spatiotemporal precision, and possibly closed-loop feedback control.
Chemotherapy is an important anti-tumor treatment in clinic to date, however, the effectiveness of traditional chemotherapy is limited by its poor selectivity, high systemic toxicity, and multidrug ...resistance. In recent years, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have become exciting drug delivery systems (DDS) due to their unique advantages, such as easy large-scale production, adjustable uniform pore size, large surface area and pore volumes. While mesoporous silica-based DDS can improve chemotherapy to a certain extent, when used in combination with other cancer therapies MSN based chemotherapy exhibits a synergistic effect, greatly improving therapeutic outcomes. In this review, we discuss the applications of MSN DDS for a diverse range of chemotherapeutic combination anti-tumor therapies, including phototherapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy and other less common modalities. Furthermore, we focus on the characteristics of each nanomaterial and the synergistic advantages of the combination therapies. Lastly, we examine the challenges and future prospects of MSN based chemotherapeutic combination therapies.
A novel electrochemical sensor based on ZrO2 and ZnO hybrid nanocomposites was developed for simultaneous determination of epinephrine (EA), uric acid (UA) and folic acid (FA) with the highly ...selective and ultrasensitive. The nanocomposites have been synthesized by chemical precipitation and thermal calcine method with economical, eco-friendly and practical nature. Their structure and electrochemical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical techniques. The results reveal that the ZrO2/ZnO nanocomposites can possesses highly exposed catalytic sites, favorable conductivity, and the sensor excellent signal response for EP, UA and FA under the optimal condition. The electrochemical sensing platform has a low detection limit of 0.039 μM, 0.29 μM and 0.037 μM and a wide detection range of 0.8–420 μM, 10–2400 μM and 2–480 μM, respectively. It was also tested with a human blood serum sample at physiological pH with recovery 97.3–103.8% and relation standard deviation less than 5%. It indicates that the electrochemical sensors has a hopeful capacity of extensive applications in bioanalysis and diseases diagnosis.

To resolve the sneak leakage problem and reduce the power consumption in crossbar RRAM arrays, a Cu/Al 2 O 3 /aSi/Ta cell with self-rectifying characteristics is developed. The cell exhibits low ...operating current (~nA), high ON/OFF ratios (>100×), and pronounced nonlinearity. The use of low-programming-current RRAM elements avoids the current-driving capability bottleneck of selectors, while the integrated rectifying layer improves the RRAM operation reliability. Endurance of over 500 cycles with ~100 ON/OFF ratio was achieved without external current compliance. Even at such low programming levels, retention over 10 4 s at 100 °C can still be obtained.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, causing approximately 17.9 million deaths annually, an estimated 31% of all deaths, according to the WHO. CVDs are essentially ...rooted in atherosclerosis and are clinically classified into coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disorders. Current clinical interventions include early diagnosis, the insertion of stents, and long-term preventive therapy. However, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic tools are subject to a number of limitations including, but not limited to, potential toxicity induced by contrast agents and unexpected bleeding caused by anti-platelet drugs. Nanomedicine has achieved great advancements in biomedical area. Among them, cell membrane coated nanoparticles, denoted as CMCNPs, have acquired enormous expectations due to their biomimetic properties. Such membrane coating technology not only helps avoid immune clearance, but also endows nanoparticles with diverse cellular and functional mimicry. In this review, we will describe the superiorities of CMCNPs in treating cardiovascular diseases and their potentials in optimizing current clinical managements.
A user wants to retrieve a file from a database without revealing the identity of the file retrieved at the database, which is known as the problem of private information retrieval (PIR). If it is ...further required that the user obtains no information about the database other than the desired file, the concept of symmetric private information retrieval (SPIR) is introduced to guarantee privacy for both parties. In this paper, the problem of SPIR is studied for a database stored among N nodes in a distributed way, by using an (N, M)-MDS storage code. The information-theoretic capacity of SPIR, defined as the maximum number of information bits of the desired file retrieved per downloaded bit, for the coded database is derived. It is shown that the SPIR capacity for coded database is 1-M/N, when the amount of the shared common randomness of distributed nodes (unavailable at the user) is at least M/N-M times the file size. Otherwise, the SPIR capacity for the coded database equals zero.
This study aimed to evaluate the significance of homocysteine (HCY) levels in predicting recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. This ...retrospective study involved 1272 CRC patients. The risk of mortality increased with increasing HCY levels in CRC patients. The optimal HCY cutoff value in CRC patients was 15.2 μmol/L. The RFS (45.8% vs. 60.5%, p < 0.001) and OS (48.2% vs. 63.2%, p < 0.001) of patients with high HCY levels were significantly lower than those of patients with low HCY levels. Patients with high HCY levels were older, male, had large tumours, high carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, and long hospital stays, and incurred high hospitalisation costs. Multivariate analysis showed that when HCY levels exceeded 15.2 μmol/L, the risk of adverse RFS and OS increased by 55.7% and 61.4%, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that HCY levels could supplement CEA levels and pathological staging. We constructed HCY-based prognostic nomograms, which demonstrated feasible discrimination and calibration values better than the traditional tumour, node, metastasis staging system for predicting RFS and OS. Elevated serum HCY levels were strongly associated with poor RFS and OS in CRC patients. HCY-based prognostic models are effective tools for a comprehensive evaluation of prognosis.
To solve the problem of ship automatic berthing control due to unknown time-varying disturbance and dynamic uncertainty of model parameters, an automatic berthing control law based on predefined ...performance time function is proposed. First, a predefined performance time function is designed and coupled with tracking error to achieve the predetermined performance of tracking error. Secondly, radial basis function neural network is used to approach the dynamic uncertainty of ship model parameters, and the complex uncertainty of model parameters and unknown time-varying disturbance is represented by linearized parameter form with single virtual parameter, which makes the calculation simple and easy to implement in engineering. On this basis, the reverse step control law is designed. Thirdly, the stability of the system is proved based on Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the simulation results show that the control law can make the ship reach the desired position and heading angle, and realize the automatic berthing of the ship. The control law and berthing controller designed in this paper have good applicability and robustness, which provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent control research of surface intelligent ships.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) about 22 nucleotides in size, which play an important role in gene regulation and are involved in almost all major cellular physiological ...processes. In recent years, the abnormal expression of miRNAs has been shown to be associated with human diseases including cancer. In the past ten years, the link between miRNAs and various cancers has been extensively studied, and the abnormal expression of miRNAs has been reported in various malignant tumors, such as lung cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. Due to the high malignancy grade of these cancers, it is more necessary to develop the related diagnostic and prognostic methods. According to the study of miRNAs, many potential cancer biomarkers have been proposed for the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases, especially cancer, thus providing a new theoretical basis and perspective for cancer screening. The use of miRNAs as biomarkers for diagnosis or prognosis of cancer has the advantages of being less invasive to patients, with better accuracy and lower price. In view of the important clinical significance of miRNAs in human cancer research, this article reviewed the research status of miRNAs in the above-mentioned cancers in 2021, especially in terms of diagnosis and prognosis, and provided some new perspectives and theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers.
