Aims. Solving the continuum radiative transfer equation in high opacity media requires sophisticated numerical tools. In order to test the reliability of such tools, we present a benchmark of ...radiative transfer codes in a 2D disc configuration. Methods. We test the accuracy of seven independently developed radiative transfer codes by comparing the temperature structures, spectral energy distributions, scattered light images, and linear polarisation maps that each model predicts for a variety of disc opacities and viewing angles. The test cases have been chosen to be numerically challenging, with midplane optical depths up 106, a sharp density transition at the inner edge and complex scattering matrices. We also review recent progress in the implementation of the Monte Carlo method that allow an efficient solution to these kinds of problems and discuss the advantages and limitations of Monte Carlo codes compared to those of discrete ordinate codes. Results. For each of the test cases, the predicted results from the radiative transfer codes are within good agreement. The results indicate that these codes can be confidently used to interpret present and future observations of protoplanetary discs.

Approximately 25% of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patients present before the age of 18 years; early-onset IBD is defined as disease presenting before 10 years of age. Although early-onset disease is rare, it presents a particular challenge both in terms of treatment and diagnosis.
There is a strong genetic component to these diseases and it is now possible to identify specific genetic mutations associated with certain patterns of early-onset IBD. All of these children require specific clinical work-up that is often performed at specialist centres. Young children with IBD, present a particular challenge to the radiologist because conventional bowel imaging techniques such as MR Enterography require general anaesthetic and other techniques such as CT or fluoroscopy must be carefully considered given the increased susceptibility to radiation in this young patient population. In this paper, we present a review of the aetiology, clinical work-up, differential diagnosis, and latest theories on the genetics of early-onset and very-early onset (<6 years) IBD. We also present our experience in the imaging of these children with particular focus on the difficulties and nuances that this group present to the radiologist.
SN 2008D was discovered while following up an unusually bright X-ray transient (XT) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2770. We present early optical spectra ( obtained 1.75 days after the XT) which ...allowed the first identification of the object as a supernova ( SN) at redshift z = 0.007. These spectra were acquired during the initial declining phase of the light curve, likely produced in the stellar envelope cooling after shock breakout, and rarely observed. They exhibit a rather flat spectral energy distribution with broad undulations, and a strong, W-shaped feature with minima at 3980 and 4190 angstrom ( rest frame). We also present extensive spectroscopy and photometry of the SN during the subsequent photospheric phase. Unlike SNe associated with gamma-ray bursts, SN 2008D displayed prominent He features and is therefore of Type Ib.
Summary
Our aim was to assess risk of vertebral fracture during high-intensity resistance and impact training (HiRIT) for postmenopausal women with low bone mass. HiRIT did not induce vertebral ...fracture, as evidenced by a reduction in kyphosis following 8 months of training and a lack of change in vertebral morphology.
Introduction
The LIFTMOR trial demonstrated a novel, HiRIT program notably improved bone mass in postmenopausal women with osteopenia and osteoporosis. While no clinical signs or symptoms of vertebral crush fracture were evident during the trial, anecdotal feedback suggests that concerns about safety of HiRIT in the osteoporosis demographic remain. The aim of the current work was to assess vertebral body morphology, Cobb angle, and clinical measures of thoracic kyphosis in participants in the LIFTMOR trial for evidence of vertebral fracture following 8 months of supervised HiRIT.
Methods
Participants were randomized to either 8 months of 30-min, twice-weekly, supervised HiRIT or unsupervised, low-intensity, home-based exercise (CON). Lateral thoracolumbar DXA scans (Medix DR, Medilink, France) were performed at baseline and follow-up. Cobb angle was determined, and vertebral fracture identification was performed using the semiquantitative Genant method. Clinical kyphosis measurements were performed in relaxed standing (neutral posture) and standing tall using an inclinometer and a flexicurve.
Results
The HiRIT group exhibited a reduction in inclinometer-determined standing tall thoracic kyphosis compared to CON (− 6.7 ± 8.2° vs − 1.6 ± 8.1°,
p
= 0.031). Both the HiRIT and CON groups exhibited within-group improvement in kyphosis in relaxed standing as measured by both inclinometer and flexicurve (
p
< 0.05). There were no changes in vertebral fracture classification in the HiRIT group post-intervention. A single, new, wedge deformity was observed for CON.
Conclusions
Supervised HiRIT was not associated with an increased risk of vertebral fracture in postmenopausal women with low bone mass. Indeed, a clinically relevant improvement in thoracic kyphosis was observed following 8 months of supervised HiRIT, further supporting its efficacy as an osteoporosis intervention for postmenopausal women with low to very low bone mass.

These include the way that organizational learning is seen as a key source of competitive advantage, and the wider analysis that individuals and organizations now inhabit a `knowledge economy?. Theoretically, recent years have seen emerging understandings of the social significance of `communities of practice?, whilst learning in its many manifestations is increasingly seen as being imbricated in issues of power. Extracellular vesicles, including exosomes, are naturally derived nanovesicles generated in and released by numerous cell types. As extracellular entities they have the capacity to interact with ...neighbouring cells and distant tissues and affect physiological processes as well as being implicated in numerous diseases including tumorigenesis and neurodegeneration. They are also under intense investigation as delivery vectors for biotherapeutics. The ways in which EVs interact with recipient cells to influence cell physiology and deliver a macromolecular payload are at the early stages of exploration. A significant challenge within these studies is the ability to label EVs directly or indirectly with fluorescent probes to allow visualization without compromising functionality. Here, we present a thiol-based fluorescence labelling method allowing comprehensive analysis of the cellular uptake of prostate cancer derived EVs in live cells using confocal microscopy. Labelling of the EVs in this way did not influence their size and had no effect on their ability to induce differentiation of lung fibroblasts to myofibroblasts. For endocytosis analyses, depletion of key endocytic proteins and the use of chemical inhibitors (Dynasore, EIPA, Rottlerin and IPA-3) indicated that fluid-phase endocytosis and/or macropinocytosis was involved in EV internalisation. Over a period of six hours EVs were observed to increasingly co-localise with lysosomes, indicating a possible termination point following internalisation. Overall this method provides new opportunities for analysing the cellular dynamics of EVs as biological entities affecting cell and whole body physiology as well as investigating their potential as drug delivery vectors.
Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to describe the design and lessons learned from implementing a large-scale patient safety collaborative and the impact of an intervention on teamwork ...climate in intensive care units (ICUs) across the state of Michigan. Materials and Methods This study used a collaborative model for improvement involving researchers from the Johns Hopkins University and Michigan Health and Hospital Association. A quality improvement team in each ICU collected and submitted baseline data and implemented quality improvement interventions. Primary outcome measures were improvements in safety culture scores using the Teamwork Climate Scale of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ); 99 ICUs provided baseline SAQ data. Baseline performance for adherence to evidence-based interventions for ventilated patients is also reported. The intervention to improve safety culture was the comprehensive unit-based safety program. The rwg statistic measures the extent to which there is a group consensus. Results Overall response rate for the baseline SAQ was 72%. Statistical tests confirmed that teamwork climate scores provided a valid measure of teamwork climate consensus among caregivers in an ICU, mean rwg was 0.840 (SD = 0.07). Teamwork climate varied significantly among ICUs at baseline (F98, 5325 = 5.90, P < .001), ranging from 16% to 92% of caregivers in an ICU reporting good teamwork climate. A subset of 72 ICUs repeated the culture assessment in 2005, and a 2-tailed paired samples t test showed that teamwork climate improved from 2004 to 2005, t (71) = −2.921, P < .005. Adherence to using evidence-based interventions ranged from a mean of 25% for maintaining glucose at 110 mg/dL or less to 89% for stress ulcer prophylaxis. Conclusion This study describes the first statewide effort to improve patient safety in ICUs. The use of the comprehensive unit-based safety program was associated with significant improvements in safety culture. This collaborative may serve as a model to implement feasible and methodologically rigorous methods to improve and sustain patient safety on a larger scale.
We present the discovery of four new transiting hot Jupiters, detected mainly from SuperWASP-North and SOPHIE observations. These new planets, WASP-52b, WASP-58b, WASP-59b, and WASP-60b, have orbital ...periods ranging from 1.7 to 7.9 days, masses between 0.46 and 0.94 MJup, and radii between 0.73 and 1.49 RJup. Their G1 to K5 dwarf host stars have V magnitudes in the range 11.7−13.0. The depths of the transits are between 0.6 and 2.7%, depending on the target. With their large radii, WASP-52b and WASP-58b are new cases of low-density, inflated planets, whereas WASP-59b is likely to have a large, dense core. WASP-60 shows shallow transits. In the case of WASP-52 we also detected the Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly via time-resolved spectroscopy of a transit. We measured the sky-projected obliquity λ = 24° +17-9, indicating that WASP-52b orbits in the same direction as its host star isrotating and that this prograde orbit is slightly misaligned with the stellar equator. These four new planetary systems increase our statistics on hot Jupiters and provide new targets for follow-up studies.
