We report the results of the analyses of the cosmic ray data collected with a 4 tonne (3×1×1 m3) active mass (volume) Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) operated in a dual-phase mode. We ...present a detailed study of the TPC's response, its main detector parameters and performance. The results are important for the understanding and further developments of the dual-phase technology, thanks to the verification of key aspects, such as the extraction of electrons from liquid to gas and their amplification through the entire one square metre readout plain, gain stability, purity and charge sharing between readout views.
Mice deficient for the major lysosomal aspartic proteinase cathepsin D, generated by gene targeting, develop normally during the first 2 weeks, stop thriving in the third week and die in a state of ...anorexia at day 26 +/− 1. An atrophy of the ileal mucosa first observed in the third week progresses towards widespread intestinal necroses accompanied by thromboemboli. Thymus and spleen undergo massive destruction with fulminant loss of T and B cells. Lysosomal bulk proteolysis is maintained. These results suggest, that vital functions of cathepsin D are exerted by limited proteolysis of proteins regulating cell growth and/or tissue homeostasis, while its contribution to bulk proteolysis in lysosomes appears to be non‐critical.
Commercial silica gels of the pyrogenic and precipitated types were hydrothermally treated for 72 hours at temperatures between 90 °C and 210 °C in water of autogenous pressure. The samples were ...characterised by IR spectroscopy, water and nitrogen adsorption. Stability and sorption capacity run similarly. The more Q4 (Si(OSi)4) building units the framework of a silica gel contained, the lower was its sorption capacity. Sorption capacity increased with rising number of structural defects characterised by the presence of Q3 (Si(OSi)3OH) and Q2 (Si(OSi)2(OH)2) groups. Simultaneously, the hydrothermal stability of the silica material dropped off.

In this study, the influence of production-related gaps on the shear tension strength and fatigue performance was investigated for resistance spot welded TRIP steel HCT690, Furthermore, the local ...strain distribution in shear tension test was calculated by the digital image correlation technique (DIG), The static shear tension strength was found to be almost independent of gaps up to 3 mm, The maximum local strain in the spot weld region however decreases depending on which sample side (deformed or undeformed) is considered, In addition, it has been ascertained that gaps of 3 mm lead to a significant drop in fatigue life compared to gap-free shear tension samples, This fact could be attributed to decreased stiffness, higher transverse vibration and higher rotation (0) between the sheets as well as increased local stress calculated by 2-dimensional FE simulation.
Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 or Machado–Joseph disease (SCA3/MJD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by an unstable and expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat that leads to the ...expansion of a polyglutamine tract in a protein of unknown function, ataxin-3. We have generated and characterized a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies raised against ataxin-3 and used them to analyze its expression and localization. In Hela cells, multiple isoforms are expressed besides the major 55-kDa form. While the majority of ataxin-3 is cytosolic, both immunocytofluorescence and subcellular fractionation studies indicate the presence of ataxin-3, in particular, of some of the minor isoforms, in the nuclear and mitochodrial compartments. We also show that ataxin-3 can be phosphorylated. In the brain, only one ataxin-3 isoform containing the polyglutamine stretch was detected, and normal and mutated proteins were found equally expressed in all patient brain regions analyzed. In most neurons, ataxin-3 had a cytoplasmic, dendritic, and axonal localization. Some neurons presented an additional nuclear localization. Ataxin-3 is widely expressed throughout the brain, with a variable intensity specific for subpopulations of neurons. Its expression is, however, not restricted to regions that show intranuclear inclusions and neurodegeneration in SCA3/MJD.
