The cylindrical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (cKP) equation related to cylindrical geometry, as one type of the variable-coefficient KP equation, is widely used to describe nonlinear phenomena in fluid, plasma and other fields. With symbolic computation, we have derived the multi-soliton solutions, rational solutions, lump solutions and interaction solutions to the cKP equation based on its bilinear representation. The interaction solutions include two types: The interaction between lump and stripe, and the interaction between lump and soliton. Moreover, we have proposed a new approach to search for the interaction solutions, which can decrease the complexity of the associated nonlinear algebraic equations via reducing the number of the variables. The fast calculation approach provides the condition for the predictability of the interaction solution.
Spinal long-term potentiation (LTP) at C-fiber synapses is hypothesized to underlie chronic pain. However, a causal link between spinal LTP and chronic pain is still lacking. Here, we report that ...high-frequency stimulation (HFS; 100 Hz, 10 V) of the mouse sciatic nerve reliably induces spinal LTP without causing nerve injury. LTP-inducible stimulation triggers chronic pain lasting for more than 35 days and increases the number of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) terminals in the spinal dorsal horn. The behavioral and morphological changes can be prevented by blocking NMDA receptors, ablating spinal microglia, or conditionally deleting microglial brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). HFS-induced spinal LTP, microglial activation, and upregulation of BDNF are inhibited by antibodies against colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1). Together, our results show that microglial CSF1 and BDNF signaling are indispensable for spinal LTP and chronic pain. The microglia-dependent transition of synaptic potentiation to structural alterations in pain pathways may underlie pain chronicity.

The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance has posed a major threat to both human health and environmental ecosystem. Although the disinfection has been proved to be efficient to control the ...occurrence of pathogens, little effort is dedicated to revealing potential impacts of disinfection on transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), particularly for free-living ARGs in final disinfected effluent of urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTP). Here, we investigated the effects of chlorine disinfection on the occurrence and concentration of both extracellular ARGs (eARGs) and intracellular ARGs (iARGs) in a full-scale UWWTP over a year. We reported that the concentrations of both eARGs and iARGs would be increased by the disinfection with chlorine dioxide (ClO2). Specifically, chlorination preferentially increased the abundances of eARGs against macrolide (ermB), tetracycline (tetA, tetB and tetC), sulfonamide (sul1, sul2 and sul3), β-lactam (ampC), aminoglycosides (aph(2’)-Id), rifampicin (katG) and vancomycin (vanA) up to 3.8 folds. Similarly, the abundances of iARGs were also increased up to 7.8 folds after chlorination. In terms of correlation analyses, the abundance of Escherichia coli before chlorination showed a strong positive correlation with the total eARG concentration, while lower temperature and higher ammonium concentration were assumed to be associated with the concentration of iARGs. This study suggests the chlorine disinfection could increase the abundances of both iARGs and eARGs, thereby posing risk of the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in environments.

We investigated the ...association between maternal exposure to ambient temperature and the risk of preterm birth (< 37 weeks of gestation) in Guangzhou, China.
We used a Cox proportional hazards model to estimate associations between preterm birth and average temperature during each week of gestation, with weekly temperature modeled as a time-varying exposure during four time windows: 1 week (the last week of the pregnancy), 4 weeks (the last 4 weeks of the pregnancy), late pregnancy (gestational week 20 onward), and the entire pregnancy. Information on singleton vaginal birth between 2001 and 2011 was collected. Daily meteorological data during the same period were obtained from the Guangzhou Meteorological Bureau.
A total of 838,146 singleton vaginal births were included, among which 47,209 (5.6%) were preterm births. High mean temperatures during the 4 weeks, late pregnancy, and the entire pregnancy time windows were associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. Compared with the median temperature (24.4°C), weekly exposures during the last 4 weeks of the pregnancy to extreme cold (7.6°C, the 1st percentile) and extreme heat (31.9°C, the 99th percentile) were associated with 17.9% (95% CI: 10.2, 26.2%) and 10.0% (95% CI: 2.9, 17.6%) increased risks of preterm birth, respectively. The association between extreme heat and preterm birth was stronger for preterm births during weeks 20-31 and 32-34 than those during weeks 35-36.
These findings might have important implications in preventing preterm birth in Guangzhou as well as other areas with similar weather conditions.

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have drawn great attention in image super-resolution (SR). Recently, visual attention mechanism, which exploits both of the feature importance and contextual ...cues, has been introduced to image SR and proves to be effective to improve CNN-based SR performance. In this paper, we make a thorough investigation on the attention mechanisms in a SR model and shed light on how simple and effective improvements on these ideas improve the state-of-the-arts. We further propose a unified approach called "multi-grained attention networks (MGAN)" which fully exploits the advantages of multi-scale and attention mechanisms in SR tasks. In our method, the importance of each neuron is computed according to its surrounding regions in a multi-grained fashion and then is used to adaptively re-scale the feature responses. More importantly, the "channel attention" and "spatial attention" strategies in previous methods can be essentially considered as two special cases of our method. We also introduce multi-scale dense connections to extract the image features at multiple scales and capture the features of different layers through dense skip connections. Ablation studies on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. In comparison with other state-of-the-art SR methods, our method shows the superiority in terms of both accuracy and model size.
Abstract
Context
Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1), cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4), T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (TIM-3), lymphocyte activation gene-3 (LAG-3), ...and T-cell immunoglobulin and ITIM domain (TIGIT) are considered major immune co-inhibitory receptors (CIRs) and the most promising immunotherapeutic targets in cancer treatment, but they are largely unexplored in medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
Objective
We aimed to provide the first evidence regarding the expression profiles and clinical significance of CIRs in a large cohort of MTC patients.
Design and Patients
In total, 200 MTC patients who received initial surgery in our hospital were included. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate CIR expressions in tissue microarrays (TMAs). Combined with the results of our previous programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) study, clinicopathologic and prognostic correlations of these proteins were retrospectively analyzed.
Results
TIM-3, PD-1, CTLA-4, LAG-3, and TIGIT positivity was detected in 96 (48.0%), 27 (13.5%), 25 (12.5%), 6 (3.0%), and 6 (3.0%) patients, respectively, in whom TIM-3, PD-1, and CTLA-4 expressions were positively correlated. Log-rank tests and multivariate Cox analyses both indicated that TIM-3, CTLA-4 expression, and PD-1/PD-L1 coexpression were associated with worse structural recurrence-free survival. In addition, among 20 patients who developed advanced disease during follow-up, 12 (60%) showed TIM-3 positivity, among whom 6 cases also had concurrent moderate to strong PD-1, PD-L1, or CTLA-4 expression.
Conclusions
Using the currently largest TMA cohort of this rare cancer, we delineated the CIR expression profiles in MTC, and identified TIM-3, CTLA-4 expression, and PD-1/PD-L1 coexpression as promising biomarkers for tumor recurrence. Furthermore, a subset of advanced MTCs are probably immunogenic, for which single or combined immunotherapy including TIM-3, PD-1, PD-L1, or CTLA-4 blockade may be potential therapeutic approaches in the future.
The removal of dye and toxic ionic pollutants from water is an extremely important issue. A simple filtration process to decontaminate water by employing a free‐standing fibrous membrane fabricated ...from highly uniform carbonaceous nanofibers (CNFs) is demonstrated. This process combines the excellent adsorption behavior of CNFs and the advantages of membrane filtration over conventional adsorption techniques, which include simple scale‐up, reduced time, and lower energy consumption. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the CNFs exhibited larger adsorption capacities than commercial granular active carbon (GAC) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) because of their large surface area, high uniformity, and numerous active sites on the surface of nanofibers. Membrane filtration experiments proved that the CNF membranes could remove methylene blue (MB) efficiently at a very high flux of 1580 L m−2 h−1, which is 10–100 times higher than that of commercial nano‐ or ultrafiltration membranes with similar rejection properties. The high permeability of CNF membrane permits stacking of membranes to improve adsorption capacity. In addition, the CNF membranes are easily regenerated and remain unaltered in adsorption performance over six successive cycles of dye adsorption, desorption, and washing. Given the high adsorption and regenerability performance of the CNF membrane, it should have potential applications in water purification.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have gained global attention due to their public health threat. Extracelluar ARGs (eARGs) can result in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance via free-living ARGs in natural environments, where they promote ARB transmission in drinking water distribution systems. However, eARG pollution in tap water has not been well researched. In this study, concentrations of eARGs and intracellular ARGs (iARGs) in tap water, sampled at Tianjin, China, were investigated for one year. Fourteen eARG types were found at the highest concentration of 1.3 × 105 gene copies (GC)/L. TetC was detected in 66.7% of samples, followed by sul1, sul2, and qnrA with the same detection frequency of 41.7%. Fifteen iARGs (including tetA, tetB, tetM, tetQ, tetX, sul1, sul2, sul3, ermB, blaTEM, and qnrA) were continuously detected in all collected tap water samples with sul1 and sul2 the most abundant. Additionally, both eARG and iARG concentrations in tap water presented a seasonal pattern with most abundant prevalence in summer. The concentration of observed intracellular sulfonamide resistance genes showed a significantly positive correlation with total nitrogen concentrations. This study suggested that eARG and iARG pollution of drinking water systems pose a potential risk to human public health.
Insulin/IGF-1 Signaling (IIS) is known to constrain longevity by inhibiting the transcription factor FOXO. How phosphorylation mediated by IIS kinases regulates lifespan beyond FOXO remains unclear. ...Here, we profile IIS-dependent phosphorylation changes in a large-scale quantitative phosphoproteomic analysis of wild-type and three IIS mutant Caenorhabditis elegans strains. We quantify more than 15,000 phosphosites and find that 476 of these are differentially phosphorylated in the long-lived daf-2/insulin receptor mutant. We develop a machine learning-based method to prioritize 25 potential lifespan-related phosphosites. We perform validations to show that AKT-1 pT492 inhibits DAF-16/FOXO and compensates the loss of daf-2 function, that EIF-2α pS49 potently inhibits protein synthesis and daf-2 longevity, and that reduced phosphorylation of multiple germline proteins apparently transmits reduced DAF-2 signaling to the soma. In addition, an analysis of kinases with enriched substrates detects that casein kinase 2 (CK2) subunits negatively regulate lifespan. Our study reveals detailed functional insights into longevity.
