Aim
The positive effects of animal‐assisted interventions (AAIs) in people with dementia have been frequently reported in the literature. However, it remains unclear if the positive effects are ...directly due to the presence of the animal. The aim of this study was to investigate if the inclusion of an animal adds value to psychosocial interventions for people with dementia.
Methods
The study followed a within‐subject design with two studied conditions (AAI and control intervention) and several measurement points (baseline (i.e. at beginning of the intervention), after 3 months, and after 6 months). Nineteen nursing home residents with dementia participated in the AAI (with a dog) and the control intervention. Both interventions were delivered as weekly group sessions over a period of 6 months. Outcomes examined were social interaction, emotional expression, and behavioural and psychological symptoms. These outcomes were evaluated by using video recordings at baseline and after 3 and 6 months.
Results
Nineteen patients with moderate to moderately severe dementia who lived in two nursing homes in Germany were included. During the AAI, we detected significantly longer and more frequent periods of positive emotions (pleasure) and social interaction (e.g. touch, body movements) than during the control intervention.
Conclusion
The presence of a dog appears to have beneficial effects on psychosocial intervention for people with dementia.
Viele Beziehungen von Menschen und ihren Heimtieren können als „persönliche Beziehungen“ mit ganz spezifischen Merkmalen und reziproken Qualitäten identifiziert werden. Dass die Beziehungen zu ...Heimtieren wichtige Funktionen sozialer Unterstützung erfüllen und dazu beitragen können, Gesundheit zu fördern und zu erhalten, ist inzwischen häufig beschrieben und differenziert untersucht. Mit Blick auf die Alltagspraxis von Sozialarbeiter_innen scheinen neben den positiven biopsycho-sozialen Wirkungen aber auch belastende und negative Aspekte persönlicher Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen von Bedeutung.
Der Beitrag unternimmt den Versuch, die Diskrepanz zwischen der allgegenwärtigen Präsenz von Heimtieren in der Lebenswelt der Adressat_innen Sozialer Arbeit und der nur zögerlich stattfindenden Einbindung in den Fachdiskurs zu verringern und persönliche Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen als vielschichtiges, ambivalentes und bedeutsames Thema für Soziale Arbeit und ihre Interventionen aufzuzeigen.
Many human-animal-relationships may be seen as “personal” relationships with specific characteristics and reciprocal qualities. Since many years important supportive functions of relationships with companion animals, promoting and maintaining health and well-being are well documented and studied in detail. But often in social work practice also stressing and harming aspects of human-animal-relationships – besides the positive bio-psycho-social effects – become relevant.
In this article we try to reduce the gap between an everyday presence and importance of companion animals in the lives of many social work clients on the one side and the social work discussions and literature hesitating to address this important topic on the other side. We demonstrate that the personal human-animal-relationship is a multifaceted, ambivalent but crucial issue in social work and social work interventions.
In the last few years, a large amount of research have been done in the field of youth care services. However, there is still a substantial need for empirical findings, especially on institutions ...with specific missions such as therapeutic residential groups for young people. This article grew out of cooperation between practitioners and researchers and presents the results of a German study entitled “Process Evaluation of Therapeutic Residential Groups for Young People” (TRGs). The main research question of the evaluation study was whether the treatment in the TRGs is specifically stabilizing, protective, and, above all, effective in dealing with young people with severe problems. The study employs multiple methodologies (qualitative and quantitative procedures) to obtain a satisfactorily comprehensive analysis of both outcome and process quality. The article presents selected results from the quantitative part of the study and the qualitative interview study and discusses them considering recent research in the field of child and adolescent care services.
Animals can positively influence human quality of life and well-being in various ways. International studies provide some evidence for the effectiveness of animal-assisted interventions, especially ...for old people suffering from dementia. The present research project 'Animal-assisted interventions for people suffering from dementia' (funded by the German Research Society, DFG) investigates the effects of a structured animal-assisted intervention program on quality of life and psychosocial well-being of elderly people diagnosed with dementia. The aim of this program was to enhance the state of life satisfaction and keep autonomy in daily life in the course of this neurodegenerative disease. Zusammenfassung
Tiere können die Gesundheit und das Wohlbefinden von Menschen auf verschiedenem Wege positiv beeinflussen. Internationale Erfahrungsberichte und Einzelfallstudien verweisen auf die ...gesundheitsfördernden Effekte tiergestützter Intervention insbesondere bei alten und dementen Menschen. Die DFG-Studie „Tiergestützte Intervention bei Demenzkranken“ untersuchte erstmals systematisch die Verbesserung von psychosozialem Wohlbefinden und Gesundheit sowie die Förderung der Alltagskompetenzen demenziell erkrankter PatientInnen durch ein Programm intensiver tiergestützter Gruppentherapie. Ziel dieser kontrollierten Intervention war eine möglichst lange Erhaltung und Förderung der eigenen Lebenszufriedenheit und Selbstständigkeit durch individuelle Ressourcenaktivierung im Verlauf der Demenz. Es wurde vergleichend und längsschnittlich untersucht, inwieweit und wie nachhaltig sich regelmäßige Mensch-Tier-Begegnungen auf Demenzerkrankte auswirken.

ihre soziale Wohnsituation die Gelegenheit bekommen,
sich an der Universität, an ihrer Fakultät, in ihrem Studium
und ihrem Studierendenleben sowie in den formellen und
informellen universitären Beziehungssystemen schneller
und leichter zurechtzufinden. Es gibt zudem Wohnheimtutoren,
die diese Prozesse unterstützend begleiten – u.a.
durch Einführungsveranstaltungen zu Semesterbeginn, die
Organisation von gemeinsamen Unternehmungen, aber
auch durch ihre Funktion als Ansprechpartner bei Fragen
und Problemen.
