Tephritid parasitoids reared from 26 different host fruit species showed remarkably little diversity across 21 Brazilian counties. The majority of the parasitoids (81.4%) belonged to the braconid ...subfamily Opiinae, with Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti) the most commonly encountered species. Four other opiines, namely D. brasiliensis (Szépligeti), Opius bellus Gahan, Optus sp. and Utetes (Bracanastrepha) anastrephae (Viereck) were also reared, but in much smaller numbers. Asobara anastrephae (Muesebeck), an alysiine braconid parasitoid of tephritids, accounted for an additional 18-6% of the individuals reared from tephritids. The hosts and distribution patterns of the braconid parasitoids of Brazilian fruit-infesting Tephritidae are summarized.
Precise control of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling is critical for animal development, stem cell renewal, and prevention of disease. In the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, the naked cuticle (nkd) gene ...limits signaling by the Wnt ligand Wingless (Wg) during embryo segmentation. Nkd is an intracellular protein that is composed of separable membrane- and nuclear-localization sequences (NLS) as well as a conserved EF-hand motif that binds the Wnt receptor-associated scaffold protein Dishevelled (Dsh), but the mechanism by which Nkd inhibits Wnt signaling remains a mystery. Here we identify a second NLS in Nkd that is required for full activity and that binds to the canonical nuclear import adaptor Importin-alpha3. The Nkd NLS is similar to the Importin-alpha3-binding NLS in the Drosophila heat-shock transcription factor (dHSF), and each Importin-alpha3-binding NLS required intact basic residues in similar positions for nuclear import and protein function. Our results provide further support for the hypothesis that Nkd inhibits nuclear step(s) in Wnt/beta-catenin signaling and broaden our understanding of signaling pathways that engage the nuclear import machinery.
The comparability of the early environments of Mars and Earth, and the biological evolution which occurred on early earth, motivates serious consideration of the possibility of an early martian ...biota. Environments which could have contained this early martian life and which may presently contain evidence of this former life include aquatic, ice, soil, and rock habitats. Several analogs of these potential early martian environments, which can provide useful information in searching for extinct life on Mars, are currently available for study on Earth. These terrestrial analogs include the perennially ice-covered lakes and sandstone rocks in the Polar Deserts of Antarctica, surface of snowfields and glaciers, desert soils, geothermal springs, and deep subsurface environments.
The benthos of a perennially ice-covered Antarctic lake, Lake Hoare, contained three distinct 'signatures' of lipophilic pigments. Cyanobacterial mats found in the moat at the periphery of the lake ...were dominated by the carotenoid myxoxanthophyll; carotenoids: chlorophyll a ratios in this high light environment ranged from 3 to 6.8. Chlorophyll c and fucoxanthin, pigments typical of golden-brown algae, were found at 10 to 20 m depths where the benthos is aerobic. Anaerobic benthic sediments at 20 to 30 m depths were characterized by a third pigment signature dominated by a carotenoid, tentatively identified as alloxanthin from planktonic cryptomonads, and by phaeophytin b from senescent green algae. Pigments were not found associated with alternating organic and sediment layers. As microzooplankton grazers are absent from this closed system and transformation rates are reduced at low temperatures, the benthos beneath the lake ice appears to contain a record of past phytoplankton blooms undergoing decay.
Doppler ultrasound flow velocities across clinically normally functioning mitral (Bjork-Shiley, Medtronic Hall, Lillehei-Kaster, Duromedic and Starr-Edwards) and aortic (Bjork-Shiley, Medtronic Hall, ...Lillehei-Kaster and Duromedic) valve prostheses are described. To enable ease of reference for the echocardiographer and to avoid the need for time-consuming calculations of pressure drops and effective valve orifice areas, peak flow velocities and, where relevant, pressure half times across valves of different types and sizes are tabulated. In the mitral position, there was significant negative correlation between peak velocity and valve size and between pressure half time and valve size only when a large number and a wide range of sizes of a given type of mitral prosthesis was studied. Similarly, there was significant negative correlation between peak velocity and aortic valve size for Bjork-Shiley and Duromedic valves. Regurgitant jets were detected across 18.4% of mitral and 42% of aortic prostheses.

Through an analysis of MGM's two films the Oscar-winning "Grand Hotel" of 1932 and its 1945 remake, "Weekend in the Waldorf", the author argues that the distinct ways in which the two hotels marked the territory of their elite patrons may be figured as totem and fetish.

Occupational sex segregation is well documented. Research on voluntary associations shows that these also are segregated by sex. However, little is known about the connections between these ...institutions. In this research, we explore the effects of occupational sex composition on the sex composition of respondents' voluntary memberships. We find a positive relationship between the sex composition of men's occupations and the sex composition of their voluntary memberships. This effect is found for women only when full-time homemaking is considered as an occupation. We attribute differences in our findings to the nature of occupational ties in social networks.
