Abstract
The next generation of wide-field cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys are uniquely poised to open a new window into time-domain astronomy in the millimeter band. Here, we explore the ...discovery phase space for extragalactic transients with near-term and future CMB experiments to characterize the expected population. We use existing millimeter-band light curves of known transients (gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events, fast blue optical transients (FBOTs), neutron star mergers) and theoretical models, in conjunction with known and estimated volumetric rates. Using Monte Carlo simulations of various CMB survey designs (area, cadence, depth, duration) we estimate the detection rates and the resulting light-curve characteristics. We find that existing and near-term surveys will find tens to hundreds of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), driven primarily by detections of the reverse shock emission, and including off-axis LGRBs. Next-generation experiments (CMB-S4, CMB-HD) will find tens of FBOTs in the nearby universe and will detect a few tidal disruption events. CMB-HD will additionally detect a small number of short gamma-ray bursts, where these will be discovered within the detection volume of next-generation gravitational wave experiments like the Cosmic Explorer.
We present a demonstration of delensing the observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization anisotropy. This process of reducing the gravitational-lensing-generated B-mode component ...will become increasingly important for improving searches for the B modes produced by primordial gravitational waves. In this work, we delens B-mode maps constructed from multi-frequency SPTpol observations of a 90 deg2 patch of sky by subtracting a B-mode template constructed from two inputs: SPTpol E-mode maps and a lensing potential map estimated from the Herschel 500 m map of the cosmic infrared background. We find that our delensing procedure reduces the measured B-mode power spectrum by % in the multipole range this is shown to be consistent with expectations from simulations and to be robust against systematics. The null hypothesis of no delensing is rejected at . Furthermore, we build and use a suite of realistic simulations to study the general properties of the delensing process and find that the delensing efficiency achieved in this work is limited primarily by the noise in the lensing potential map. We demonstrate the importance of including realistic experimental non-idealities in the delensing forecasts used to inform instrument and survey-strategy planning of upcoming lower-noise experiments, such as CMB-S4.
IceCube, a cubic kilometer neutrino detector located in glacial ice at the South Pole, has recently become the first neutrino telescope with a sensitivity below the TeV-PeV neutrino flux predicted ...from gamma-ray bursts if GRBs are responsible for the observed extragalactic cosmic-ray flux. IceCube has so far not detected any evidence for the predicted neutrino fluxes, and so is beginning to constrain models of cosmic ray acceleration in GRBs.
This work presents the procedures used at Argonne National Laboratory to fabricate large arrays of multichroic transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers for cosmic microwave background (CMB) ...measurements. These detectors will be assembled into the focal plane for the SPT-3G camera, the third generation CMB camera to be installed in the South Pole Telescope. The complete SPT-3G camera will have approximately 2690 pixels, for a total of 16 140 TES bolometric detectors. Each pixel is comprised of a broad-band sinuous antenna coupled to a Nb microstrip line. In-line filters are used to define the different bands before the millimeter-wavelength signal is fed to the respective Ti Au TES bolometers. There are six TES bolometer detectors per pixel, which allow for measurements of three band-passes (95, 150 and 220 GHz) and two polarizations. The steps involved in the monolithic fabrication of these detector arrays are presented here in detail. Patterns are defined using a combination of stepper and contact lithography. The misalignment between layers is kept below 200 nm. The overall fabrication involves a total of 16 processes, including reactive and magnetron sputtering, reactive ion etching, inductively coupled plasma etching and chemical etching.
The Simons Array (SA) is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment comprised of three telescopes that will observe the CMB at 90, 150, 220, and 270 GHz with more than 22,000 ...Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers. The cryogenic receivers inside each telescope are named POLARBEAR-2a, POLARBEAR-2b, and POLARBEAR-2c (PB-2a, PB-2b, and PB-2c, respectively). To allow for the large number of detectors, SA uses frequency-division multiplexing with multiplexing factor of 40. We describe the process developed to assemble the readout circuit repeatably for SA. After assembly, we characterize the readout circuit and TESs at cryogenic temperatures in a condition of negligible incident optical power. Impedances in the readout circuit bias our estimates of TES parameters, and we describe a method to account for this.
ABSTRACT
We study the polarization properties of extragalactic sources at 95 and 150 GHz in the SPTpol 500 deg2 survey. We estimate the polarized power by stacking maps at known source positions, and ...correct for noise bias by subtracting the mean polarized power at random positions in the maps. We show that the method is unbiased using a set of simulated maps with similar noise properties to the real SPTpol maps. We find a flux-weighted mean-squared polarization fraction 〈p2〉 = 8.9 ± 1.1 × 10−4 at 95 GHz and 6.9 ± 1.1 × 10−4 at 150 GHz for the full sample. This is consistent with the values obtained for a subsample of active galactic nuclei. For dusty sources, we find 95 per cent upper limits of 〈p2〉95 < 16.9 × 10−3 and 〈p2〉150 < 2.6 × 10−3. We find no evidence that the polarization fraction depends on the source flux or observing frequency. The 1σ upper limit on measured mean-squared polarization fraction at 150 GHz implies that extragalactic foregrounds will be subdominant to the CMB E and B mode polarization power spectra out to at least ℓ ≲ 5700 (ℓ ≲ 4700) and ℓ ≲ 5300 (ℓ ≲ 3600), respectively, at 95 (150) GHz.

), having 7588 TES bolometers. To enable the large arrays, we have been developing a readout system with a multiplexing factor of 40 in the frequency domain. Extending that architecture to 40 bolometers requires an increase in the bandwidth of the SQUID electronics, above 4 MHz. This paper focuses on cryogenic readout and shows how it affects cross talk and the responsivity of the TES bolometers. A series resistance, such as equivalent series resistance of capacitors for LC filters, leads to non-linear response of the bolometers. A wiring inductance modulates a voltage across the bolometers and causes cross talk. They should be controlled well to reduce systematic errors in CMB observations. We have been developing a cryogenic readout with a low series impedance and have tuned bolometers in the middle of their transition at a high frequency (

3 MHz).
POLARBEAR is a Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) polarization experiment that is located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The scientific goals of the experiment are to characterize the ...B-mode signal from gravitational lensing, as well as to search for B-mode signals created by primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). Polarbear started observations in 2012 and has published a series of results. These include the first measurement of a nonzero B-mode angular auto-power spectrum at sub-degree scales where the dominant signal is gravitational lensing of the CMB. In addition, we have achieved the first measurement of crosscorrelation between the lensing potential, which was reconstructed from the CMB polarization data alone by Polarbear, and the cosmic shear field from galaxy shapes by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. In 2014, we installed a continuously rotating half-wave plate (CRHWP) at the focus of the primary mirror to search for PGWs and demonstrated the control of low-frequency noise. We have found that the low-frequency B-mode power in the combined dataset with the Planck high-frequency maps is consistent with Galactic dust foreground, thus placing an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r < 0.90 at the 95% confidence level after marginalizing over the foregrounds.
A supermassive black hole, obscured by cosmic dust, powers the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068. Neutrinos, which rarely interact with matter, could provide information on the galaxy’s active core. We ...searched for neutrino emission from astrophysical objects using data recorded with the IceCube neutrino detector between 2011 and 2020. The positions of 110 known gamma-ray sources were individually searched for neutrino detections above atmospheric and cosmic backgrounds. We found that NGC 1068 has an excess of

neutrinos at tera–electron volt energies, with a global significance of 4.2σ, which we interpret as associated with the active galaxy. The flux of high-energy neutrinos that we measured from NGC 1068 is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit on emissions of tera–electron volt gamma rays from this source.
Nearby active galaxy emits neutrinos
Observations have shown a diffuse background of high-energy neutrinos, which is known to be of extragalactic origin. However, it has been difficult to identify individual sources that contribute to this background. The IceCube Collaboration reanalyzed the arrival directions of astrophysical neutrinos and then searched for point sources (see the Perspective by Murase). They identified evidence for neutrino emission from NGC 1068 (also known as Messier 77), a nearby active galaxy. Its properties are quite different from TXS 0506+056, which was found to be a neutrino source in 2018, leading the investigators to suggest that there might be more than one population contributing to the neutrino background. —KTS
The arrival directions of astrophysical neutrinos indicate point source neutrino emission from NGC 1068.
