spheres with radial channels from driving orientation assembly can be used for energy storage.
Highly crystalline mesoporous materials with oriented ...configurations are in demand for high-performance energy conversion devices. We report a simple evaporation-driven oriented assembly method to synthesize three-dimensional open mesoporous TiO
2
microspheres with a diameter of ~800 nm, well-controlled radially oriented hexagonal mesochannels, and crystalline anatase walls. The mesoporous TiO
2
spheres have a large accessible surface area (112 m
2
/g), a large pore volume (0.164 cm
3
/g), and highly single-crystal–like anatase walls with dominant (101) exposed facets, making them ideal for conducting mesoscopic photoanode films. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on the mesoporous TiO
2
microspheres and commercial dye N719 have a photoelectric conversion efficiency of up to 12.1%. This evaporation-driven approach can create opportunities for tailoring the orientation of inorganic building blocks in the assembly of various mesoporous materials.
Resistance to temozolomide (TMZ) and radiotherapy (RT) is a major problem for patients with GBM but may be overcome using the PARP-inhibitor ABT-888. Using two primary GBM xenografts, the efficacy of ...ABT-888 combined with RT and/or TMZ was evaluated. Treatment with ABT-888 combined with TMZ resulted in significant survival prolongation (GBM12: 55.1%, p=0.005; GBM22: 54.4%, p=0.043). ABT-888 had no effect with RT alone, but significantly enhanced survival in GBM12 when combined with concurrent RT/TMZ. With multi-cycle therapy, ABT-888 further extended the survival benefit of TMZ in the inherently sensitive GBM12 and GBM22 xenograft lines. However, after
in vivo
selection for TMZ resistance, the derivative GBM12TMZ and GBM22TMZ lines were no longer sensitized by ABT-888 in combination with TMZ, and a similar lack of efficacy was observed in two other TMZ resistant tumor lines. Thus, the sensitizing effects of ABT-888 were limited to tumor lines that had not been previously exposed to TMZ, and these results suggest that patients with newly diagnosed GBM may be more likely to respond to combined TMZ/PARP inhibitor therapy than patients with recurrent disease.
We study the knot invariant called trunk, as defined by Ozawa, and the relation of the trunk of a satellite knot with the trunk of its companion knot. Our first result is \({\rm trunk}(K) \geq n ...\cdot {\rm trunk}(J)\) where \({\rm trunk}(\cdot)\) denotes the trunk of a knot, \(K\) is a satellite knot with companion \(J\), and \(n\) is the winding number of \(K\). To upgrade winding number to wrapping number, which we denote by \(m\), we must include an extra factor of \(\frac{1}{2}\) in our second result \({\rm trunk}(K) > \frac{1}{2} m\cdot {\rm trunk}(J)\) since \(m \geq n\). We also discuss generalizations of the second result.
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most lethal malignancies with a 5-year survival rate less than 15%. Understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of ...ESCC becomes critical to develop more effective treatments.
Mcl-1 expression was measured by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR and Western blotting. Human Mcl-1 promoter activity was evaluated by reporter gene assay. The interactions between DNA and transcription factors were confirmed by electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) in vitro and by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay in cells.
Four human ESCC cell lines, TE-1, Eca109, KYSE150 and KYSE510, are revealed increased levels of Mcl-1 mRNA and protein compare with HaCaT, an immortal non-tumorigenic cell line. Results of reporter gene assays demonstrate that human Mcl-1 promoter activity is decreased by mutation of kappaB binding site, specific NF-kappaB inhibitor Bay11-7082 or dominant inhibitory molecule DNMIkappaBalpha in TE-1 and KYSE150 cell lines. Mcl-1 protein level is also attenuated by Bay11-7082 treatment or co-transfection of DNMIkappaBalpha in TE-1 and KYSE150 cells. EMSA results indicate that NF-kappaB subunits p50 and p65 bind to human Mcl-1-kappaB probe in vitro. ChIP assay further confirm p50 and p65 directly bind to human Mcl-1 promoter in intact cells, by which regulates Mcl-1 expression and contributes to the viability of TE-1 cells.
Our data provided evidence that one of the mechanisms of Mcl-1 expression in human ESCC is regulated by the activation of NF-kappaB signaling. The newly identified mechanism might provide a scientific basis for developing effective approaches to treatment human ESCC.

This paper presents Sidelock, a tangible authentication prototype on mobile devices. Grasp events and finger gestures are sensed by twenty capacitive sensors on left and right sides. They were used ...in a two-phase authentication process, in which grasp pattern wakes up devices and a 1-D template-based gesture recognizer verifies if input matches pre-defined password templates. Compared with other popular authentication approachers like PINs or grid lock, Sidelock has much larger password space and approximate recognition speed, with only 5.3% critical errors. The prototype could be minimized and embedded broadly in many common mobile devices. The user feedback suggests it is an memorable and acceptable authentication method.
OBJECTIVESThe wide implementation of next generation sequencing (NGS) technology has led to the identification of a greater number of uncommon partners of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion. The ...clinical significance of the intergenic-ALK fusion was deemed limited due to the ambiguous functional partner. Herein, we reported a case of lung adenocarcinoma harboring a novel intergenic (between REG3A and CTNNA2-AS1)-ALK fusion which is sensitive to alectinib.MATERIALS AND METHODSHematoxylin-eosin staining (HE), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and DNA-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) based on a 168-gene panel were performed on the biopsy sample.RESULTSA 50-year-old Chinese male patient diagnosed with stage IVA adenocarcinoma of the upper lobe of the right lung. A novel ALK fusion, resulting from the intergenic region between REG3A and CTNNA2-AS1 fusing with intron 19 of ALK, was unveiled by NGS analysis. Furthermore, positive expression of ALK was confirmed through IHC analysis. The patient was administered alectinib at a dose of 600 mg twice daily as first-line therapy, and partial response was assessed. To date, the progression-free survival (PFS) has exceeded 14 months without any observed serious toxicities.CONCLUSIONTo the best of our knowledge, this represents the inaugural report of a patient harboring a novel intergenic-ALK fusion with a breakpoint situated between REG3A and CTNNA2-AS1, who exhibited favorable response to alectinib. This case warrants further investigation and offers valuable insights into the response of this novel intergenic-ALK fusion to alectinib.
The image recognition of dwarf rocks is the key to the study of maritime navigation, especially to the navigation of unmanned ships, and the segmentation of images plays an important role in the ...analysis of dwarf rocks images. Aiming at solving the problem that the image segmentation method of large dwarf rocks must be given the number of segmentations in advance, this paper introduces the complete data likelihood method, hierarchical priori and recognizable priori into the mixture model to establish a Bayesian Hierarchical Mixture Model with a priori weak dependence, and uses the reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to estimate the model parameters, thus realizing jump sampling in variable- dimensional parameter spaces. In the analysis of Dwarf rocks images, the number of image components obtained in the sample is consistent with the image intensity characteristics, and the sampling results are in agreement with the original image. The results of data analysis show that the Bayesian hierarchical mixture model method can reflect the actual characteristics of the dwarf reef image well and realize the automatic segmentation of the dwarf reef image.

Face detection is an important task in the field of computer vision, which is widely used in the field of security, human-machine interaction, identity recognition, and etc. Many existing methods are ...developed for image based face pose estimation, but few of them can be directly extended to videos. However, video-based face pose estimation is much more important and frequently used in real applications. This paper describes a method of automatic face pose estimation from videos based on mixture-of-trees model and optical flow. Unlike the traditional mixture-of-trees model, which may easily incur errors in losing faces or with wrong angles for a sequence of faces in video, our method is much more robust by considering the spatio-temporal consistency on the face pose estimation for video. To preserve the spatio-temporal consistency from one frame to the next, this method employs an optical flow on the video to guide the face pose estimation based on mixture-of-trees. Our method is extensively evaluated on videos including different faces and with different pose angles. Both visual and statistics results demonstrated its effectiveness on automatic face pose estimation.
