Barrett's esophagus (BE) belongs to a pathological phenomenon occurring in the esophagus, this paper intended to unveil the underlying function of miR-378a-5p and its target TSPAN8 in BE progression. ...GEO analysis was conducted to determine differentially expressed genes in BE samples. Non-dysplastic metaplasia BE samples, high-grade dysplastic BE samples and controls were collected from subjects. CP-A and CP-B cells were exposed to bile acids (BA) to mimic gastroesophageal reflux in BE cells. RT-qPCR as well as western blot were applied for verifying expressions of miR-378a-5p, TSPAN8, CDX2 and SOX9. CCK-8, wound scratch together with Transwell assays were exploited for ascertaining cell proliferation, migration as well as invasion. The targeted relationship of miR-378a-5p and TSPAN8 could be verified by correlation analysis, dual-luciferase reporter experiment, and rescue experiments. Through analyzing GSE26886 dataset, we screened the most abundantly expressed gene TSPAN8 in BE samples. miR-378a-5p was reduced whereas TSPAN8 was elevated in CP-A as well as CP-B cells after triggering with BA. Knocking down TSPAN8 could counteract BA-triggered enhancement in BE cell proliferation, migration along with invasion. miR-378a-5p could suppress BE cell proliferation, and migration along with invasion via targeting TSPAN8. In BE, miR-378a-5p targeted TSPAN8 to inhibit BE cell proliferation, and migration along invasion. miR-378a-5p deletion or elevation of TSPAN8 may be key point in regulating CDX2 and SOX9 levels, thereby promoting BE formation.
In this paper, a novel Gabor-based kernel principal component analysis (PCA) with doubly nonlinear mapping is proposed for human face recognition. In our approach, the Gabor wavelets are used to ...extract facial features, then a doubly nonlinear mapping kernel PCA (DKPCA) is proposed to perform feature transformation and face recognition. The conventional kernel PCA nonlinearly maps an input image into a high-dimensional feature space in order to make the mapped features linearly separable. However, this method does not consider the structural characteristics of the face images, and it is difficult to determine which nonlinear mapping is more effective for face recognition. In this paper, a new method of nonlinear mapping, which is performed in the original feature space, is defined. The proposed nonlinear mapping not only considers the statistical property of the input features, but also adopts an eigenmask to emphasize those important facial feature points. Therefore, after this mapping, the transformed features have a higher discriminating power, and the relative importance of the features adapts to the spatial importance of the face images. This new nonlinear mapping is combined with the conventional kernel PCA to be called "doubly" nonlinear mapping kernel PCA. The proposed algorithm is evaluated based on the Yale database, the AR database, the ORL database and the YaleB database by using different face recognition methods such as PCA, Gabor wavelets plus PCA, and Gabor wavelets plus kernel PCA with fractional power polynomial models. Objective
This study investigated the effect of auditory working memory task on situation awareness (SA) and eye-movement patterns in complex dynamic environments.
Background
Many human errors in ...aviation are caused by a lack of SA, and distraction from auditory secondary tasks is a serious threat to SA. However, it remains unclear how auditory working memory tasks affect SA and eye-movement patterns.
Method
Participants (n = 28) were randomly allocated to two groups and received different periods of visual search training (short versus long). They subsequently completed a situation awareness measurement task in three auditory secondary task conditions (without secondary task, auditory calculation task, and auditory 2-back task). Eye-movement data were collected during the situation awareness measurement task.
Results
The auditory 2-back task significantly reduced overall SA, Level 1 SA, dwell times, and total percentage of fixation time on task-related areas of interests in the SA measurement task. Overall SA and Level 3 SA were not reduced by the auditory 2-back task in individuals in the longer visual search training time condition.
Conclusion
Auditory working memory load impairs SA in the perception and projection stage; however, greater experience can overcome impairment of SA in the projection stage.
Application
This study provided possible approaches to preventing loss of SA: (1) improving crew members’ communication skills to ensure the accurate and clear transmission of information, reducing the difficulty of processing information, and (2) providing targeted cognitive training tailored to each pilot’s level of experience.

As COVID-19 is highly infectious, many patients can simultaneously flood into hospitals for diagnosis and treatment, which has greatly challenged public medical systems. Treatment priority is often determined by the symptom severity based on first assessment. However, clinical observation suggests that some patients with mild symptoms may quickly deteriorate. Hence, it is crucial to identify patient early deterioration to optimize treatment strategy. To this end, we develop an early-warning system with deep learning techniques to predict COVID-19 malignant progression. Our method leverages CT scans and the clinical data of outpatients and achieves an AUC of 0.920 in the single-center study. We also propose a domain adaptation approach to improve the generalization of our model and achieve an average AUC of 0.874 in the multicenter study. Moreover, our model automatically identifies crucial indicators that contribute to the malignant progression, including Troponin, Brain natriuretic peptide, White cell count, Aspartate aminotransferase, Creatinine, and Hypersensitive C-reactive protein.
The climate change on the impact of grain production potential has significant regional differences. Researchers have studied the grain production potential of various crop combinations or focused on ...single crop types in a typical area; however, the regional differences of the climate change on the impact of grain production potential were neglected. This paper used the Global Agro-Ecological Zone (GAEZ 3.0) model to focus on the analysis what is the climate change on the impact of grain production potential in different geographic units (Northern Shaanxi Plateau, Guanzhong Basin, Qinba Mountain) in Shaanxi Province of China. The case showed that the precipitation (Pre) what made changes of grain production potential was the most important factor in different geographic units. The increase of Pre had a positive impact on the grain production potential in Northern Shaanxi Plateau and Guanzhong Basin. However, in Qinba Mountain, due to excessive Pre in the Qinba Mountains, the decrease of Pre had a certain positive impact on the grain production potential. The precipitation was less in the Northern Shaanxi Plateau; therefore, its major factors leading to changes of crop production were precipitation and rainfall days. The increase of the mean maximum temperature (Tmx) and the mean minimum temperature (Tmn) had a positive impact of the grain production potential in the Northern Shaanxi Plateau and Guanzhong Basin. The higher temperature had a negative impact on the grain production potential. In Qinba Mountain, the increase of the temperature has a certain negative impact on the grain production potential. It has more influence of Tmx in the Guanzhong Basin and Qinba Mountain rather than that in the Northern Shaanxi Plateau. Generally speaking, the major climatic factors leading grain production potential were Pre and Tmx in Guanzhong Basin and Qinba Mountain.

At the present time, there is an absence of any proven effective antiviral therapy for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in non-severe patients with COVID-19.
A retrospective study based on propensity score matching (PSM) was designed. Primary outcomes included the severity and mortality rates. Secondary outcomes included the duration of fever, virus clearance time, length of hospital stay, and use of antibiotics.
A total of 639 non-severe patients with COVID-19 were enrolled. Forty-five patients received IVIG therapy and 594 received non-IVIG therapy. After PSM (1:2 ratio), the baseline characteristics were well balanced between the IVIG group (n = 45) and control group (n = 90). No statistically significant difference was found between the IVIG group and control group in the duration of fever (median 3 vs 3 days, p = 0.667), virus clearance time (median 11 vs 10 days, p = 0.288), length of hospital stay (median 14 vs 13 days, p = 0.469), or use of antibiotics (40% vs 38.9%, p = 0.901). Meanwhile, compared to the IVIG group, no more patients in the control group progressed to severe disease (3.3% vs 6.6%, p = 0.376) or died (0 vs 2.2%, p = 0.156).

Abstract
Objective
The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of machine learning (ML) techniques in predicting survival for chordoma patients in comparison with the standard Cox ...proportional hazards (CoxPH) model.
Methods
Using a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database of consecutive newly diagnosed chordoma cases between January 2000 and December 2018, we created and validated three ML survival models as well as a traditional CoxPH model in this population-based cohort study. Randomly, the dataset was divided into training and validation datasets. Tuning hyperparameters on the training dataset involved a 1000-iteration random search with fivefold cross-validation. Concordance index (C-index), Brier score, and integrated Brier score were used to evaluate the performance of the model. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration curves, and area under the ROC curves (AUC) were used to assess the reliability of the models by predicting 5- and 10-year survival probabilities.
Results
A total of 724 chordoma patients were divided into training (

= 508) and validation (

= 216) cohorts. Cox regression identified nine significant prognostic factors (

< 0.05). ML models showed superior performance over CoxPH model, with DeepSurv having the highest C-index (0.795) and the best discrimination for 5- and 10-year survival (AUC 0.84 and 0.88). Calibration curves revealed strong correlation between DeepSurv predictions and actual survival. Risk stratification by DeepSurv model effectively discriminated high- and low-risk groups (

Conclusion
ML algorithms based on time-to-event results are effective in chordoma prediction, with DeepSurv having the best discrimination performance and calibration.

Non-communicable Disease (NCD) related behavioral risk factors (BRF) plays a crucial role in NCD prevention, as does oral hygiene behavior in oral health promotion. We examined the association ...between NCD BRF and toothbrushing using data from a population-based survey, which recruited 4485 adults aged 18+ years, in Chongqing city, China. Prevalence of five NDC BRF and their clustering within individual were determined by toothbrushing frequency. Ordinal logistic regression examined the association between toothbrushing and BRF clustering. Prevalence of current smoking, insufficient intake of vegetable and fruit, and harmful use of alcohol increased significantly with toothbrushing frequency. Respondents who brushed teeth ≥2 times daily consumed more red meat than those with less frequent toothbrushing. Relative to those with no BRF, the adjusted cumulative odds ratio of brushing teeth less frequently was 2.1 (95% CI: 1.4-3.1) for respondents with 3+ BRF. The adjusted cumulative odds ratio was 1.5 (1.1-2.1) and 1.4 (1.0-1.8) for those who had two BRF and those who had one, respectively. Significant correlation between toothbrushing and NCD BRF implied that integrated intervention strategy involving the both may be beneficial in public health programs targeting at either oral health or NCDs, or both.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a vital global health problem. The characteristics are high morbidity, high mortality, difficulty in early diagnosis and insensitivity to chemotherapy. The main ...therapeutic schemes for treating HCC mainly include Tyrosine kinase inhibitors represented by sorafenib and lenvatinib. In recent years, immunotherapy for HCC has also achieved certain results. However, a great number of patients failed to benefit from systemic therapies. FAM50A belongs to the FAM50 family and can be used as a DNA-binding protein or transcription factor. It may take part in the splicing of RNA precursors. In studies of cancer, FAM50A has been demonstrated to participate in the progression of myeloid breast cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. However, the effect of FAM50A on HCC is still unknown. In this study, we have demonstrated the cancer-promoting effects and diagnostic value of FAM50A in HCC using multiple databases and surgical samples. We identified the role of FAM50A in the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) and immunotherapy efficacy in HCC. We also proved the effects of FAM50A on the malignancy of HCC in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, we confirmed that FAM50A is an important proto-oncogene in HCC. FAM50A acts as a diagnostic marker, immunomodulator and therapeutic target for HCC.
