To better understand the basic mechanism of conversion reaction in ternary metal fluoride cathodes, the Cu–Fe–F (CFF) thin films were successfully grown in situ by pulsed laser deposition in this work. The physico-chemical properties and electrochemical performance were discussed. Such a CFF solid solution phase presented great cycle stability (82% capacity remains after 100 cycles at current density of 285 mA g
−1
) and higher energy efficiency (71.8%), which can be attributed to the reversible structural rearrangement after the delithiation process disclosed by ex situ XPS, high-resolution TEM, and selected-area electron diffraction.
Four new sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) (1–4), along with a biosynthetically related SL (5), have been isolated from the leaves of Magnolia grandiflora. Magrandate A (1) is notable as the first C18 ...homogemarane type SL, featuring a unique 1,7-dioxaspiro4.4nonan-6-one core. Compounds 2 and 3, representing the first instances of chlorine-substituted gemarane-type SL analogs in natural products, were also identified. The structures of these isolates were elucidated through a combination of spectroscopic data analysis, electronic circular dichroism calculations, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. All isolates demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Notably, 3–5 showed a significant inhibitory effect on nitric oxide production, with IC50 values ranging from 0.79 to 4.73 μmol·L−1. Additionally, 4 and 5 exhibited moderate cytotoxic activities against three cancer cell lines, with IC50 values between 3.09 and 11.23 μmol·L−1.

Background: Though postoperative radiation for esophageal cancer is offered in selected cases, there is conflicting evidence as to whether it improves overall survival (OS). We ...performed a retrospective investigation to analyze the prognosis impact of adjuvant radiation in a large cohort of patients. Methods: From 2002 to 2008, 545 patients underwent radical esophagectomy (R0) with or without postoperative radiation were eligible for retrospectively analysis. Patients were grouped to surgery only (n=346) and surgery plus postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) (n=199). Radiation dose was 50 Gy in 25 fractions. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analysis were used to compare OS. Results: The use of PORT was associated with significantly improved OS ( p =0.006). The median OS was 31 months in the group receiving PORT and 21 months in the group undergoing surgery alone. The addition of PORT improved OS at 3 years from 38.3 to 45.8% compared with surgery alone. For American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage III esophageal cancer (T1-2N2M0, T3N1-2M0, T4N1-3M0), there was significant improvement on OS ( p < 0.001) in PORT group, for not only metastatic lymph-node ratio <0.25 ( p = 0.047), but also metastatic lymph-node ratio >0.25 ( p = 0.013). However, for stages IIB disease (T1-2N1M0) there was no significant differences. Conclusions: This large population-based analysis supports the use of PORT for pathologic lymph nodes positive stage III esophageal cancer. Our results suggest that a subset of such patients may benefit from aggressive local therapy.

To explore the intraperitoneal free cancer cell (IFCC) detection value of negative enrichment and immune fluorescence
hybridization (NEimFISH) on chromosomes (CEN) 8/17.
To verify the reliability of ...NEimFISH, 29 gastric cancer tumors, their adjacent tissues and greater omental tissues were tested. Our study then included 105 gastric cancer patients for IFCC. We defined patients as IFCC-positive if a signal was detected, regardless of the detailed cancer cell numbers. A comparison of clinicopathological features was conducted among IFCC groups. We also compared the diagnosis value and peritoneal recurrence predictive value among different detection methods. The comparison of IFCC number was also conducted among different groups.
A cutoff of 2.5 positive cells could distinguish all benign tissue samples and 97% of malignant tissue samples in our study. Compared to intestinal gastric cancer, patients with diffuse gastric cancer tended to have more IFCCs (6
. 4, P=0.002). The IFCC counts were often higher in the lymphovascular invasion positive group than negative group (3
. 1, P=0.022). All IFCC samples that were considered positive using conventional cytology were also found to be positive using NEimFISH. When compared to conventional cytology and paraffin pathology, NEimFISH had a higher IFCC positive rate (68.9%) and higher one-year peritoneal recurrence predictive value with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.922.
Gastric cancer could be effectively diagnosed by NEimFISH. The IFCC number found using NEimFISH on CEN8/17 is closely associated with Lauren type and vascular invasion of cancer. NEimFISH is a reliable detection modality with a higher positive detection rate, higher one-year peritoneal recurrence predictive value and quantitative features for IFCC of gastric cancer.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE—The underlying mechanisms of stroke-obesity paradox are still not fully understood. This study aims to investigate the contribution of insulin resistance to the association ...between body mass index and stroke outcomes.
METHODS—Patients with ischemic stroke without history of diabetes mellitus in the Abnormal Glucose Regulation in Patients With Acute Stroke Across-China registry were included. Overweight or obese was defined as body mass index ≥23, and the median of homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance index was chosen as cutoff to define insulin resistance. Cox or logistic regression model was used to assess the interaction between body mass index and homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance on 1-year prognosis (all-cause mortality and poor functional outcome defined as modified Rankin Scale score 3–6).
RESULTS—Of 1227 study participants, the median homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance was 1.9 (interquartile range, 1.1–3.1) and 863 (70.3%) patients were classified as overweight or obese. Among insulin-resistant patients, overweight/obese patients experienced one-half of the risk of death after stroke than their low/normal weight counterparts (9.42% versus 17.69%, unadjusted hazard ratio, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.31–0.82), while among insulin-sensitive ones, no significant difference of mortality risk was found (7.58% versus 6.91%, 1.07; 0.57–1.99). Similar trends were observed for poor functional outcome. Results were similar after adjustments for confounders. There were significant interactions between body mass index and homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance on the risks of mortality (P=0.045) and poor functional outcome (P=0.049).
CONCLUSIONS—We observed the obesity paradox for mortality and functional outcome in insulin-resistant patients but did not find the obesity paradox in insulin-sensitive patients. Insulin resistance may be one of the mechanisms underlying the obesity paradox of the outcome in patients with ischemic stroke.
Addressing pancreaticobiliary disorders concomitant with gastroesophageal varices remains challenging. The goal of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of endoscopic ...retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in cirrhotic and noncirrhotic patients with gastroesophageal varices.We retrospectively analyzed the data of consecutive patients with gastroesophageal varices who underwent ERCP.Two hundred seventy ERCP procedures were performed on 208 patients. The overall technical success rate was 98.5%, and no difference was found between cirrhotic and noncirrhotic patients (98.7% vs 97.7%, P = .511); of these, endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage, endoscopic metal biliary endoprosthesis placement, endoscopic retrograde pancreatic drainage, and stone extraction were conducted in 173/270 (64.1%), 27/270 (10.0%), 26/270 (9.6%), and 116/270 (43.0%) cases, respectively. Endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage and stone extraction were more frequently performed in cirrhotic cases (67.7% versus 45.5%, P = .005; 46.5% versus 25.0%, P = .009, respectively), while the noncirrhotic group had significantly higher rates of endoscopic metal biliary endoprosthesis placement (31.8% versus 5.8%, P = .000) and endoscopic retrograde pancreatic drainage (18.2% versus 8.0%, P = .036) than the cirrhotic group. The overall rate of adverse events was 21.1%, including fever (6.7%), post-ERCP pancreatitis ( 3.0%), hyperamylasemia (6.3%), duodenal papilla bleeding (3.3%), cardiac mucosal laceration (1.1%), and perforation (0.4%). No differences in any of the adverse events were found between the 2 groups. Additionally, gastroesophageal variceal bleeding occurred in 1 patient with grade III varices 7 days after ERCP.ERCP may be effective and safe for patients with gastroesophageal varices, irrespective of the etiologies caused by liver cirrhosis.

The diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound and CT for PCs was only 22.22% (2/9) and 25.0% (1/4), respectively, and neither modality could indicate whether the cysts were functional or not.
