The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low-temperature transport anomalies whose origin is of great interest. Here we uniquely access the surface electronic structure of the ...anomalous transport regime by combining state-of-the-art laser and synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission techniques. We observe clear in-gap states (up to ~4 meV), whose temperature dependence is contingent on the Kondo gap formation. In addition, our observed in-gap Fermi surface oddness tied with the Kramers' point topology, their coexistence with the two-dimensional transport anomaly in the Kondo hybridization regime, as well as their robustness against thermal recycling, taken together, collectively provide strong evidence for protected surface metallicity with a Fermi surface whose topology is consistent with the theoretically predicted topological Fermi surface. Our observations of systematic surface electronic structure provide the fundamental electronic parameters for the anomalous Kondo ground state of correlated electron material SmB6.
Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blockade targeting the PD-1 immune checkpoint has demonstrated unprecedented clinical efficacy in the treatment of advanced cancers including hematologic ...malignancies. This article reviews the landscape of PD-1/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and current PD-1 blockade immunotherapy trials in B-cell lymphomas. Most notably, in relapsed/refractory classical Hodgkin lymphoma, which frequently has increased PD-1+ tumor-infiltrating T cells, 9p24.1 genetic alteration, and high PD-L1 expression, anti-PD-1 monotherapy has demonstrated remarkable objective response rates (ORRs) of 65% to 87% and durable disease control in phase 1/2 clinical trials. The median duration of response was 16 months in a phase 2 trial. PD-1 blockade has also shown promise in a phase 1 trial of nivolumab in relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas, including follicular lymphoma, which often displays abundant PD-1 expression on intratumoral T cells, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, which variably expresses PD-1 and PD-L1. In primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma, which frequently has 9p24.1 alterations, the ORR was 35% in a phase 2 trial of pembrolizumab. In contrast, the ORR with pembrolizumab was 0% in relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and 44% in CLL with Richter transformation in a phase 2 trial. T cells from CLL patients have elevated PD-1 expression; CLL PD-1+ T cells can exhibit a pseudo-exhaustion or a replicative senescence phenotype. PD-1 expression was also found in marginal zone lymphoma but not in mantle cell lymphoma, although currently anti-PD-1 clinical trial data are not available. Mechanisms and predictive biomarkers for PD-1 blockade immunotherapy, treatment-related adverse events, hyperprogression, and combination therapies are discussed in the context of B-cell lymphomas.
Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has an established role in promoting tumor progression and the acquisition of therapeutic resistance. Here, the EMT phenotype was detected in ...cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer tissues and cell lines, and correlated with decreased miR-186 expression, increased Twist1 expression, chemoresistance and poor prognosis in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients. Introducing miR-186 into EOC cells led to a reduction in twist family bHLH transcription factor 1 (Twist1) expression along with morphological, functional and molecular changes consistent with mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition, G1 cell-cycle arrest and enhanced cell apoptosis, which consequently rendered the cells more sensitive to cisplatin in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, luciferase reporter and rescue assay results showed that the EMT and drug resistance reversal in response to miR-186 was mediated by Twist1. Collectively, these findings implicate miR-186 as an attractive candidate for overcoming chemoresistance in ovarian cancer therapy.
Geometric phases are noise resilient, and thus provide a robust way towards high-fidelity quantum manipulation. Here we experimentally demonstrate arbitrary nonadiabatic holonomic single-qubit ...quantum gates for both a superconducting transmon qubit and a microwave cavity in a single-loop way. In both cases, an auxiliary state is utilized, and two resonant microwave drives are simultaneously applied with well-controlled but varying amplitudes and phases for the arbitrariness of the gate. The resulting gates on the transmon qubit achieve a fidelity of 0.996 characterized by randomized benchmarking and the ones on the cavity show an averaged fidelity of 0.978 based on a full quantum process tomography. In principle, a nontrivial two-qubit holonomic gate between the qubit and the cavity can also be realized based on our presented experimental scheme. Our experiment thus paves the way towards practical nonadiabatic holonomic quantum manipulation with both qubits and cavities in a superconducting circuit.
A simple, efficient scheme was developed to obtain near-gigaelectronvolt electron beams with energy spreads of few per-mille level in a single-stage laser wakefield accelerator. Longitudinal plasma ...density was tailored to control relativistic laser-beam evolution, resulting in injection, dechirping, and a quasi-phase-stable acceleration. With this scheme, electron beams with peak energies of 780–840 MeV, rms energy spreads of 2.4‰–4.1‰, charges of 8.5–23.6 pC, and rms divergences of 0.1–0.4 mrad were experimentally obtained. Quasi-three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations agreed well with the experimental results. The dechirping strength was estimated to reach up to 11 TeV/mm/m, which is higher than previously obtained results. Such high-quality electron beams will boost the development of compact intense coherent radiation sources and x-ray free-electron lasers.
Using geometric phases to realize noise-resilient quantum computing is an important method to enhance the control fidelity. In this work, we experimentally realize a universal nonadiabatic geometric ...quantum gate set in a superconducting qubit chain. We characterize the realized single- and two-qubit geometric gates with both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking methods. The measured average fidelities for the single-qubit rotation gates and two-qubit controlled-Z gate are 0.9977(1) and 0.977(9), respectively. Besides, we also experimentally demonstrate the noise-resilient feature of the realized single-qubit geometric gates by comparing their performance with the conventional dynamical gates with different types of errors in the control field. Thus, our experiment proves a way to achieve high-fidelity geometric quantum gates for robust quantum computation.

Congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAM) is rare, usually diagnosed in the pediatric population, and may occur in adults. Pulmonary neuroendocrine cell ...hyperplasia (PNECH) mimicking diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) associated with CPAM has not been described previously. We report a case of CPAM Type 1 with PNECH.
Methods/Case Report
A 33-year-old male, with past medical history of latent tuberculosis (TB) by Quantiferon blood testing, recurrent pneumonia, recurrent lung abscesses, and lung cavitary lesion for three years, presented with fever, cough with hemoptysis, shortness of breath, and left-sided chest pain. Computerized tomography of chest displayed a 10.8 cm cavitary lesion in the left lower lobe of the lung. The patient underwent left lower lobectomy of the lung. Grossly, the lobectomy specimen revealed a 10.5 cm irregular cavity communicating to the superior segmental bronchus of the left lower lobe. Microscopically, the dominant large cyst was surrounded by lung parenchyma and small cystically dilated spaces resembling bronchioles under the fibrotic pleura. The large cyst was lined by respiratory epithelium with rare pathognomonic mucous cells in clusters. Cyst walls contained smooth muscle, small islands of cartilage, and focal intense acute and chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates with hemorrhage. There were multiple foci of proliferation of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells centered around bronchioles surrounding the large cyst. The neuroendocrine cells were arranged from individual cells and cellular aggregates to larger tumorlets, highlighted by Synaptophysin and Chromogranin immunostains. No granuloma or necrosis was present. No acid-fast bacilli or fungal microorganisms were identified by special stains. The findings are consistent with CPAM type 1, with PNECH.

Conclusion
Our study demonstrates a histologically diagnosed adult congenital pulmonary airway malformations type 1 with an incidental pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, which mimics diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of such an association.
We compile and analyze approximately 200 trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of molecular masers associated with very young high-mass stars. Most of the measurements come from the BeSSeL ...Survey using the VLBA and the Japanese VERA project. These measurements strongly suggest that the Milky Way is a four-arm spiral, with some extra arm segments and spurs. Fitting log-periodic spirals to the locations of the masers, allowing for "kinks" in the spirals and using well-established arm tangencies in the fourth Galactic quadrant, allows us to significantly expand our view of the structure of the Milky Way. We present an updated model for its spiral structure and incorporate it into our previously published parallax-based distance-estimation program for sources associated with spiral arms. Modeling the three-dimensional space motions yields estimates of the distance to the Galactic center, , the circular rotation speed at the Sun's position, km s−1, and the nature of the rotation curve. Our data strongly constrain the full circular velocity of the Sun, km s−1, and its angular velocity, km s−1 kpc-1. Transforming the measured space motions to a Galactocentric frame which rotates with the Galaxy, we find non-circular velocity components typically 10 km s−1. However, near the Galactic bar and in a portion of the Perseus arm we find significantly larger non-circular motions. Young high-mass stars within 7 kpc of the Galactic center have a scale height of only 19 pc, and thus are well suited to define the Galactic plane. We find that the orientation of the plane is consistent with the IAU-defined plane to within 0 1, and that the Sun is offset toward the north Galactic pole by pc. Accounting for this offset places the central supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, in the midplane of the Galaxy. The measured motions perpendicular to the plane of the Galaxy limit precession of the plane to 4 km s−1 at the radius of the Sun. Using our improved Galactic parameters, we predict the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar to be at a distance of 6.54 0.24 kpc, assuming its orbital decay from gravitational radiation follows general relativity.
