The outbreak of Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) has posed unprecedented pressure and threats to healthcare workers in Wuhan and the entire country.
To assess the effect of the COVID-19 outbreak ...on the sleep quality of healthcare workers in a children's healthcare centre in Wuhan.
A cross-sectional, anonymized, self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted at the Children's Healthcare Centre of Renmin Hospital, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. The questionnaire consisted of three parts, including socio-demographic characteristics and COVID-19 epidemic-related factors, the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and Zung's self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS).
In total, 47 out of 123 (38%) participants with PSQI scores > 7 were identified as having sleep disturbance. A logistic regression analysis showed that sleep disturbance was independently associated with being an only child (adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.40 (1.21-9.57), P < 0.05), exposure to COVID-19 patients (adjusted OR and 95% CI 2.97 (1.08-8.18), P < 0.05) and depression (adjusted OR and 95% CI 2.83 (1.10-7.27), P < 0.05).
We observed that, during the outbreak of COVID-19, sleep disturbance was highly prevalent among paediatric healthcare workers, and sleep disturbance was independently associated with being an only child, exposure to COVID-19 patients and depression. Therefore, more mental health services are required for front-line paediatric healthcare workers in Wuhan.
By means of first-principles calculation, we explore the vacancy mechanism of titanium sesquioxide (Ti2O3) and further investigate the influence of vacancy on the electronic properties of Ti2O3. Two ...vacancy models are considered. We find that Ti2O3 prefers to form oxygen vacancy (O-va) in comparison to Ti vacancy (Ti-va) because the removed oxygen atom improves the localized hybridization between Ti and O. The low concentration of vacancies is more thermodynamic stability than that of high concentration of vacancies. In comparison to titanium dioxide (TiO2), Ti2O3 exhibits the metallic behavior due to the band overlap between the conduction band and the valence band. Importantly, we find that those vacancies enhance the electronic transport of Ti2O3 because the removed atom promotes the band overlaps at the Fermi level (EF).

•Vacancy mechanism of Titanium Sesquioxide is studied by first-principles calculations.•Ti2O3 exhibits the semiconductor-to-metal transition compared to the TiO2.•Ti2O3 prefers to form the O vacancy due to the strong localized hybridization between Ti and O.•Those vacancies enhance the electronic transport of Ti2O3.
In December 2019, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan. However, the characteristics and risk factors associated with disease severity, unimprovement and mortality are unclear and our ...objective is to throw some light on these.
All consecutive patients diagnosed with COVID-19 admitted to the Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from January 11 to February 6, 2020, were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study.
A total of 663 COVID-19 patients were included in this study. Among these, 247 (37.3%) had at least one kind of chronic disease; 0.5% of the patients (n = 3) were diagnosed with mild COVID-19, while 37.8% (251/663), 47.5% (315/663), and 14.2% (94/663) were in moderate, severe, and critical conditions, respectively. In our hospital, during follow-up 251 of 663 patients (37.9%) improved and 25 patients died, a mortality rate of 3.77%. Older patients (>60 years old) and those with chronic diseases were prone to have a severe to critical COVID-19 condition, to show unimprovement, and to die (p <0.001, <0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified being male (OR = 0.486, 95%CI 0.311–0.758; p 0.001), having a severe COVID-19 condition (OR = 0.129, 95%CI 0.082–0.201; p <0.001), expectoration (OR = 1.796, 95%CI 1.062–3.036; p 0.029), muscle ache (OR = 0.309, 95%CI 0.153–0.626; p 0.001), and decreased albumin (OR = 1.929, 95%CI 1.199–3.104; p 0.007) as being associated with unimprovement in COVID-19 patients.
Male sex, a severe COVID-19 condition, expectoration, muscle ache, and decreased albumin were independent risk factors which influence the improvement of COVID-19 patients.
Rapid urbanization has considerably altered carbon biogeochemical cycle and river hydrology. However, the influences of urban land use and urban-induced nutrient increase on dissolved organic matter ...(DOM) characteristics are poorly understood. Here we hypothesize that the alterations significantly change sources and levels of DOM in river systems that drain the urban areas. To test the hypothesis, we investigated DOM in headwater rivers with varied urban intensities in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA), China, through field sampling conducted in the dry and wet seasons. We found positive relationships of urban land (%Urban) with DOC concentration and chromophoric DOM (CDOM) absorption coefficients a254, a280 and a350, as well as fluorescence index (FI370), indicating the significantly increased levels of DOM and autochthonous sources along an urbanization gradient. A stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that occurrences of DOC and CDOM can be predicted by %Urban, while increasing autochthonous source is predictable by the increase in riverine nitrogen. Moreover, a254, a280 and FI370 values showed distinct seasonal variations, with significantly higher CDOM concentration in the wet season and with much higher autochthonous signal in the dry season with high nitrogen loading. Based on the findings, we conclude that urbanization influences occurrences and sources of DOM, with increasing urbanization making an important and direct contribution to DOM, and an indirect effect of urban induced nutrient enrichment, i.e., enhanced nutrient loadings increase autochthonous DOM production in rivers.
•Urbanization largely enhances levels of DOC, CDOM, nutrients and biological sources.•DOC, CDOM and FI370 are positively related to of nutrient concentrations.•DOC and CDOM are predicted well by urban land, FI370 is explained by nutrient level.•CDOM abundance is higher in wet season, autochthonous DOM is higher in dry season.
Background
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether adjuvant chemotherapy is associated with improved survival in patients with resectable gastric neuroendocrine carcinomas (G‐NECs) or mixed ...adenoneuroendocrine carcinomas (G‐MANECs).
Methods
The study included patients with G‐NECs or G‐MANECs who underwent surgery in one of 21 centres in China between 2004 and 2016. Propensity score matching analysis was used to reduce selection bias, and overall survival (OS) in different treatment groups was estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method.
Results
In total, 804 patients with resectable G‐NECs or G‐MANECs were included, of whom 490 (60·9 per cent) received adjuvant chemotherapy. After propensity score matching, OS in the chemotherapy group was similar to that in the no‐chemotherapy group. Among patients with G‐NECs, survival in the fluorouracil (5‐FU)‐based chemotherapy group and the non‐5‐FU‐based chemotherapy group was similar to that in the no‐chemotherapy group. Similarly, etoposide plus cisplatin or irinotecan plus cisplatin was not associated with better OS in patients with G‐NECs. Among patients with G‐MANECs, OS in the non‐5‐FU‐based chemotherapy group was worse than that in the no‐chemotherapy group. Patients with G‐MANECs did not have better OS when platinum‐based chemotherapy was
used.
Conclusion
There was no survival benefit in patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy for G‐NECs or G‐MANECs.
Antecedentes
This multicentre study enrolled 804 patients with resectable gastric neuroendocrine carcinomas and gastric mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinomas. In propensity score matching analysis, there were no associations between the use of adjuvant chemotherapy and improved overall survival. Similar results were obtained in stratified analysis according to different chemotherapy regimens.

Sources and quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in streams may be largely controlled by the landscape and season. In this study, we attempted to answer three critical questions: 1) Do land ...use/land cover (LULC) types affect DOM characteristics? 2) Is there a seasonal fluctuation in DOM components? 3) How do DOM quality and LULC types influence aqueous carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2). To achieve this, we investigated the fluorescence characteristics of DOM and its implication for pCO2 in three streams draining land with different urban intensities under distinctive dry and wet seasons. Four fluorescence components were identified, including two terrestrial humic-like components, one protein-like component and one microbial humic-like component. We found a significant positive relationship of the maximum fluorescence intensity (Fmax) of the four components and fluorescence index (FI370) with urbanization intensity in both the dry and wet seasons. The mean Fmax, biological index (BIX) and FI370 all exhibited an increasing trend from upstream to downstream in the stream with highest proportions of urban and cropland. The fluorescence characteristics were negatively related to proportion of forested land in the both seasons. The terrestrial humic-like DOM was dominating in the studied streams. Moreover, the seasonality altered the DOM composition, with protein-like component emerging only in stream waters during the dry season, while microbial humic-like component exclusively occurred during the wet season. pCO2 values were positively related to terrestrial humic-like and biological protein-like components, and urban land. The dry season had much higher pCO2 than the wet season. Results from the Partial Least Squares Path (PLS-PM) models further indicated that LULC types were important in mediating fluorescence DOM whilst pCO2 was more sensitive to the direct effect from FDOM dynamics. We conclude that DOM source and quality in streams are reflective to LULC and climate seasonality, and are good indicators of pCO2 via source tracer and quality of fluorescence components.
•Urban land significantly increases levels of endogenous and exogenous DOM, and pCO2.•Elevated forest land decreases the terrestrial and autochthonous DOM, and pCO2.•Protein-like DOM occurs in the dry season while microbial DOM emerges in wet season.•Higher protein-like DOM and FI370 in dry season indicates increasing stream DOM process.•DOM is a good indicator of pCO2 via source tracer and fluorescence component quality.

Merging neutron stars offer an excellent laboratory for simultaneously studying strong-field gravity and matter in extreme environments. We establish the physical association of an electromagnetic ...counterpart (EM170817) with gravitational waves (GW170817) detected from merging neutron stars. By synthesizing a panchromatic data set, we demonstrate that merging neutron stars are a long-sought production site forging heavy elements by r-process nucleosynthesis. The weak gamma rays seen in EM170817 are dissimilar to classical short gamma-ray bursts with ultrarelativistic jets. Instead, we suggest that breakout of a wide-angle, mildly relativistic cocoon engulfing the jet explains the low-luminosity gamma rays, the high-luminosity ultraviolet-optical-infrared, and the delayed radio and x-ray emission. We posit that all neutron star mergers may lead to a wide-angle cocoon breakout, sometimes accompanied by a successful jet and sometimes by a choked jet.
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report electronic structure for representative members of ternary topological insulators. We show that several members of this family, such as Bi ...sub(2)Se sub(2)Te, Bi sub(2)Te sub(2)Se, and GeBi sub(2) Te sub(4), exhibit a singly degenerate Dirac-like surface state, while Bi sub(2)Se sub(2)S is a fully gapped insulator with no measurable surface state. One of these compounds, Bi sub(2)Se sub(2) Te, shows tunable surface state dispersion upon its electronic alloying with Sb (Sb sub(x)Bi sub(2-x)Se sub(2) Te series). Other members of the ternary family such as GeBi sub(2)Te sub(4) and BiTe sub(1.5)S sub(1.5) show an in-gap surface Dirac point, the former of which has been predicted to show nonzero weak topological invariants such as (1; 111); thus belonging to a different topological class than BiTe sub(1.5)S sub(1.5). The measured band structure presented here will be a valuable guide for interpreting transport, thermoelectric, and thermopower measurements on these compounds. The unique surface band topology observed in these compounds contributes towards identifying designer materials with desired flexibility needed for thermoelectric and spintronic device fabrication.
Aberrant expression of miR-335 has been frequently reported in cancer studies, suggesting that there is a close correlation between miR-335 and cancer during its development, progression, metastasis ...and prognosis. The expression of miR-335 in gastric cancer and its effects are not known. Relative expression of miR-335 in 4 gastric cancer cell lines and in 70 gastric cancer tissues was confirmed by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR compared with controls. Transwell cell migration and Matrigel invasion assay in vitro and metastasis formation assay in vivo were used to examine the effects of miR-335 expression on gastric cancer cell invasion and metastasis. The effect of miR-335 expression on gastric cancer cell proliferation was estimated by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Luciferase reporter assay and western blot were used to examine the potential target genes and related pathways. Gene silencing with small-interfering RNA was used to examine the effects of target genes on gastric cancer cell invasion. miR-335 was dramatically downregulated in gastric cancer cell lines than in the normal gastric cell line GES-1. Low expression of miR-335 was significantly associated with lymph-node metastasis, poor pT stage, poor pN stage and invasion of lymphatic vessels. Overexpression of miR-335 suppressed gastric cancer cell invasion and metastasis in vitro and in vivo, but has no significant effects on cell proliferation. Furthermore, miR-335 might suppress gastric cancer invasion and metastasis by targeting Bcl-w and specificity protein 1 (SP1). Taken together, our results provide evidence that miR-335 might function as a metastasis suppressor in gastric cancer by targeting SP1 directly and indirectly through the Bcl-w-induced phosphoinositide 3-kinase-Akt-Sp1 pathway. miR-335 showing altered expression at different stages of gastric cancer could be a target for gastric cancer therapies and could be further developed as a potential prognostic factor.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to characterize anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) community in sediments of the Dongjiang River, a drinking water source of Hong Kong. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ...diversity and distribution of the anammox community were investigated based on a comparative analyses of 16S rRNA and hydrazine oxidation (hzo) genes of anammox bacteria. Candidatus Brocadia and two new anammox bacterial clusters were detected based on phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes. In contrast, the targeting of hzo genes indicated the presence of only Candidatus Jettenia with four different clusters. It was found that the sequence diversities of hzo genes were higher than those of the 16S rRNA genes. The abundance of anammox bacteria varied significantly among the sediment samples based on qPCR. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that nitrite concentration was the key factor influencing the abundance of anammox bacteria. The redundance analysis (RDA) confirmed that the combination of the contents of nitrite and nitrate, and the ratio of total nitrogen vs total carbon (TN/TC) had significant impact on the anammox bacterial community structure. CONCLUSIONS: The results revealed that the diverse anammox bacteria were present in sediments of the Dongjiang River, and the community structures were associated with varied environmental factors caused by urban pollutant invasion. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first report about the distribution of anammox bacterial community in sediments of the Dongjiang River, which provides helpful information of anammox niche specificity and influencing factors in the river ecosystem.
