Merging neutron stars offer an excellent laboratory for simultaneously studying strong-field gravity and matter in extreme environments. We establish the physical association of an electromagnetic ...counterpart (EM170817) with gravitational waves (GW170817) detected from merging neutron stars. By synthesizing a panchromatic data set, we demonstrate that merging neutron stars are a long-sought production site forging heavy elements by r-process nucleosynthesis. The weak gamma rays seen in EM170817 are dissimilar to classical short gamma-ray bursts with ultrarelativistic jets. Instead, we suggest that breakout of a wide-angle, mildly relativistic cocoon engulfing the jet explains the low-luminosity gamma rays, the high-luminosity ultraviolet-optical-infrared, and the delayed radio and x-ray emission. We posit that all neutron star mergers may lead to a wide-angle cocoon breakout, sometimes accompanied by a successful jet and sometimes by a choked jet.
We present observations of supernova (SN) 2017ens, discovered by the ATLAS survey and identified as a hot blue object through the GREAT program. The redshift z = 0.1086 implies a peak brightness of ...Mg = −21.1 mag, placing the object within the regime of superluminous supernovae. We observe a dramatic spectral evolution, from initially being blue and featureless, to later developing features similar to those of the broadlined Type Ic SN 1998bw, and finally showing ∼2000 km s−1 wide H and Hβ emission. Relatively narrow Balmer emission (reminiscent of a SN IIn) is present at all times. We also detect coronal lines, indicative of a dense circumstellar medium. We constrain the progenitor wind velocity to ∼50-60 km s−1 based on P-Cygni profiles, which is far slower than those present in Wolf-Rayet stars. This may suggest that the progenitor passed through a luminous blue variable phase, or that the wind is instead from a binary companion red supergiant star. At late times we see the ∼2000 km s−1 wide H emission persisting at high luminosity (∼3 × 1040 erg s−1) for at least 100 day, perhaps indicative of additional mass loss at high velocities that could have been ejected by a pulsational pair instability.
Background: Mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients predict the patients who will respond to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) ...treatment. A recent study has suggested that 33% of NSCLC showed primary tumor/metastasis discordance of EGFR expression by immunohistochemistry analysis. We intended to find out whether the EGFR mutations of primary lung cancers are concordant to that of corresponding metastatic tumors. Materials and methods: We analyzed EGFR exons 18–21 from paired primary and metastatic tumors in 67 lung cancer patients who had not received TKI before tissues were sampled. Results: Using the direct sequencing method, 9 of 18 (50%) patients with EGFR mutation-positive primary lung tumors had lost the mutations in metastases. For 26 patients who were EGFR mutation positive in the metastatic tumors, 17 (65%) were negative in the primary tumors. We analyzed these paired tissues with discrepant EGFR mutations by the Scorpion Amplified Refractory Mutation System assay. Finally, the discordant rate reached 27% (18 of 67 cases). Conclusion: EGFR mutations in primary lung tumors do not always reflect the same situation in metastases. Analysis of EGFR mutations in the primary lung tumor would be inadequate for planning the use of TKI for advanced NSCLC.
Summary
Cancer immunotherapy unleashing the power of host immunity on eliminating cancer cells represents a critical advance in cancer treatment; however, effective anti‐tumor responses are largely ...dampened by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Emerging studies have revealed that physiological features in the TME, including glucose deprivation, hypoxia and low pH, established by the metabolically dysregulated cancer cells restrict anti‐tumor immunity by impeding the metabolic fitness of tumor‐infiltrating cytotoxic CD8+ T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. Furthermore, infiltrating immunomodulatory cells with different metabolic preferences also facilitate the establishment of the immunosuppressive TME. Therefore, deciphering the metabolic cross‐talk between immune cells and cancer cells in the TME and elucidating the impact of this process during tumorigenesis are needed to harness anti‐tumor immunity more effectively. Herein, we summarize the immunosuppressive features of TME and how these features impair anti‐tumor immunity. Moreover, we postulate how immune cells may be involved in shaping the metabolic features of cancer cells and discuss how we might improve the anti‐tumor functions of tumor‐specific T cells by rewiring their metabolic regulations.
In this review, we summarize how metabolic conflicts in the tumor microenvironment dampen host anti‐tumor immunity, and also discuss the probable contributions of immunoediting to the establishment of immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment with metabolic modulations for infiltrating immune cells.
This study investigated the extent of heavy metal accumulation in leaf vegetables and associated potential health risks in agricultural areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China. Total ...concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) were determined in 92 pairs of soil and leaf vegetable (flowering Chinese cabbage, lettuce, pakchoi, Chinese cabbage, loose-leaf lettuce, and Chinese leaf mustard) samples collected from seven agricultural areas (cities). The bioconcentration factors (BCF) of heavy metals from soil to vegetables were estimated, and the potential health risks of heavy metal exposure to the PRD residents through consumption of local leaf vegetables were assessed. Results showed that among the six leaf vegetables, pakchoi had the lowest capacity for heavy metal enrichment, whereas among the five heavy metals, Cd had the highest capacity for transferring from soil into vegetables, with BCF values 30-fold those of Hg and 50-fold those of Cr, Pb and As. Sewage irrigation and fertilization were likely the main sources of heavy metals accumulated in leaf vegetables grown in agricultural areas of the PRD region. Different from previous findings, soil pH had no clear effect on metal accumulation in leaf vegetables. Despite a certain degree of metal enrichment from soil to leaf vegetables, the PRD residents were not exposed to significant health risks associated with consumption of local leaf vegetables. Nevertheless, more attention should be paid to children due to their sensitivity to metal pollutants.
We present a radio-quiet quasar at z = 0.237 discovered "turning on" by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF). The transient, iPTF 16bco, was detected by iPTF in the nucleus of a galaxy ...with an archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectrum with weak narrow-line emission characteristic of a low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER). Our follow-up spectra show the dramatic appearance of broad Balmer lines and a power-law continuum characteristic of a luminous ( erg s−1) type 1 quasar 12 yr later. Our photometric monitoring with PTF from 2009-2012 and serendipitous X-ray observations from the XMM-Newton Slew Survey in 2011 and 2015 constrain the change of state to have occurred less than 500 days before the iPTF detection. An enhanced broad H /O iii λ5007 line ratio in the type 1 state relative to other changing-look quasars also is suggestive of the most rapid change of state yet observed in a quasar. We argue that the >10 increase in Eddington ratio inferred from the brightening in UV and X-ray continuum flux is more likely due to an intrinsic change in the accretion rate of a preexisting accretion disk than an external mechanism such as variable obscuration, microlensing, or the tidal disruption of a star. However, further monitoring will be helpful in better constraining the mechanism driving this change of state. The rapid "turn-on" of the quasar is much shorter than the viscous infall timescale of an accretion disk and requires a disk instability that can develop around a black hole on timescales less than 1 yr.
The present case-control study was to investigate the relationships of plasma leptin level and anthropometric measures of adiposity with the risk of breast cancer. Questionnaire information, ...anthropometric measures and blood samples were taken before treatment from 297 incident cases with breast cancer and 593 controls admitted for health examination at the Tri-Service General Hospital, Taipei, between 2004 and 2006. Plasma levels of leptin were measured by RIA. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for assessing the associations. Overall, higher leptin concentrations were significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (OR (95% CI) for top vs bottom tertile of leptin was 1.63 (1.07-2.49), P(trend)=0.009). Waist circumference was a significant anthropometric factor for breast cancer in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Furthermore, the associations of leptin with breast cancer risk remained after adjustment for obesity indices. These results suggest that leptin may have an independent role in breast tumorigenesis. Regardless of the impact of circulating leptin, more research is needed to elucidate molecular mechanisms and local leptin levels that are critical for the development of breast cancers.
From a study of the light curves of the M dwarfs observed by the Kepler space telescope in its primary mission, a number of flare events with the peak flux increases reaching more than the nominal ...stellar luminosity have been found. One of them, KIC 9201463, produced an extreme flare with the peak flux increase jumping to five times the quiet-time value. In relative terms, this class of hyperflares is much stronger than the superflares of the solar-type stars and could have a very important influence on the atmospheric evolution and the potential development of biospheres of habitable super-Earths orbiting around M dwarf stars. A cross-correlation of the flare activities of some of these M dwarf stars and their H equivalent width (EW) values derived from the LAMOST project indicates that the H EW values can be used to monitor the occurrence of hyperflares as well as the level of flare activity of different classes of M dwarfs with fast to slow rotations, and hence the long-term environmental effects of star-planet interaction of exoplanets.
An evident transition of tensile deformation behaviors appeared in commercial purity aluminum as the grain size reduced from micrometer to submicrometer range. The transition grain size decreased as ...the deformation temperature decreased from room temperature to 77
K. A model was proposed to explain the deformation behaviors in ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum. As grain size decreased below a critical value, which may correspond to the cell size present at the applied strain rate and temperature, the mean free path of dislocation was no longer determined by the dislocation structure, but limited by the grain boundaries. This causes an enhancement of dynamic recovery rate, and reduction of hardening rate in UFG metals, leading to the presence of yielding peak, Lüders deformation, and reduced tensile elongation.
Although the Higgs boson has been discovered, its self-couplings are poorly constrained. This leaves the nature of the Higgs boson undetermined. Motivated by different Higgs potential scenarios other ...than the Landau-Ginzburg type in the standard model, we systematically organize various new physics scenarios-elementary Higgs, Nambu-Goldstone Higgs, Coleman-Weinberg Higgs, and tadpole-induced Higgs, etc. We find that double-Higgs production at the 27 TeV high-energy LHC can be used to discriminate different Higgs potential scenarios, while it is necessary to use triple-Higgs production at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider to fully determine the shape of the Higgs potential.
