Carotenoids, particularly lycopene, are thought to decrease prostate cancer risk, but the relationship between plasma carotenoid concentrations and risk in various populations has not been well ...characterized. Comparing 118 non-Hispanic Caucasian men mainly from southeast Texas with nonmetastatic prostate cancer with 52 healthy men from the same area, we conducted a case-control analysis evaluating associations between risk and plasma levels of total carotenoids, beta-cryptoxanthin, alpha- and trans-beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, total lycopenes, trans-lycopene, total cis-lycopenes, and cis-lycopene isoforms 1, 2, 3, and 5. Risk for men with high plasma levels of alpha-carotene, trans-beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, and lutein and zeaxanthin was less than half that for those with lower levels. In contrast, we observed no significant associations for total lycopenes, all-trans-lycopene, and cis-lycopene isomer peaks 2, 3, and 5, although high levels of cis-lycopene isomer peak 1 were inversely associated with risk. Analysis of men with aggressive disease (Gleason scores of greater than or equal to 7, n= 88) vs. less aggressive cases (Gleason scores of <7, n = 30) failed to reveal significant associations between carotenoid levels and the risk of diagnosis with aggressive disease. These findings suggest that, in these men, higher circulating levels of beta-cryptoxanthin, alpha-carotene, trans-beta-carotene, and lutein and zeaxanthin may contribute to lower prostate cancer risk but not to disease progression.

The interaction among environmental and lifestyle factors along with host factors determines the development and progression of NMSC. ...Despite the relatively benign nature of NMSC, rising incidence rates in an aging population will result in increased medical costs, morbidity, and mortality. Frequent exposure to UVR, fair skin, and reduced immunity, possibly related to aging, are the major risk factors. Because UVR exposure is responsible for most of the NMSC cases, the key to reducing the number of skin cancers is through prevention, mainly by reducing exposure to sunlight, and further exploration of possible chemopreventive agents. To understand better the complex causes of NMSC and to evaluate prevention strategies, further population-based research is necessary.
Background: Advanced practice providers (APPs) play important roles in enrolling, educating, and caring for patients in clinical trials. However, much remains unknown about the role of APPs in ...managing adverse events (AEs) in early (phase I to II) clinical trials. In this study, we assessed the outpatient management of grade 3 to 4 AEs by APPs in early trials and characterized the workflow of our APP Phase I to II Fast Track (FT) Clinic. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of patients with advanced or metastatic solid tumors enrolled in phase I to II clinical trials who were seen by APPs from September 2017 to August 2018 in the APP phase I to II FT clinic in the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics. Results: A total of 808 patients enrolled in 159 clinical trials were seen in 2,697 visits (median 3 visits per patient; range 1–28) by 10 APPs. Treatment was interrupted in 6.9% of visits, and grade 3 to 4 AEs were seen in 5.4% of visits; however, patients from 1.4% of visits were sent to the emergency center (EC) and/or admitted. Patients referred to the EC and/or admitted were more likely to have baseline hypoalbuminemia, high lactate dehydrogenase, and poor Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (i.e., ECOG > 1; p < .001). There were no associations between EC referral and gender, APP years of experience, or type of treatment. Conclusions: The APP Phase I to II FT Clinic has an important role in the management of AEs by APPs in early clinical trials in the outpatient setting, potentially avoiding EC visits and admissions.
We scanned through the genomes of 29,141 African Americans, searching for loci where the average proportion of African ancestry deviates significantly from the genome-wide average. We failed to find ...any genome-wide significant deviations, and conclude that any selection in African Americans since admixture is sufficiently weak that it falls below the threshold of our power to detect it using a large sample size. These results stand in contrast to the findings of a recent study of selection in African Americans. That study, which had 15 times fewer samples, reported six loci with significant deviations. We show that the discrepancy is likely due to insufficient correction for multiple hypothesis testing in the previous study. The same study reported 14 loci that showed greater population differentiation between African Americans and Nigerian Yoruba than would be expected in the absence of natural selection. Four such loci were previously shown to be genome-wide significant and likely to be affected by selection, but we show that most of the 10 additional loci are likely to be false positives. Additionally, the most parsimonious explanation for the loci that have significant evidence of unusual differentiation in frequency between Nigerians and Africans Americans is selection in Africa prior to their forced migration to the Americas.
Abstract
Plasma-assisted polishing (PAP) as a damage-free and highly efficient polishing technique has been widely applied to difficult-to-machine wide-gap semiconductor materials such as 4H-SiC ...(0001) and GaN (0001). In this study, a 20-mm square large mosaic single crystal diamond (SCD) substrate synthesized by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was polished by PAP. Argon-based plasma containing oxygen was used in PAP to modify the surface of quartz glass polishing plate, and a high material removal rate (MRR) of 13.3 μm/h was obtained. The flatness of SCD polished by PAP measured by an interferometer was 0.5 μm. The surface roughness measured by both scanning white light interferometer (SWLI) (84-μm square) and atomic force microscope (AFM) (5-μm square) was less than 0.5 nm

The exposure of family caregivers to anticancer drugs for pediatric patients with malignancy is a potential health risk that needs to be minimized. We monitored the amount of cyclophosphamide (CPM) ...that had adhered to the undershirts of patients and the personal protective equipment (PPE) of family caregivers as well as the caregivers' urine levels of CPM within the first three days after the first and second courses of high-dose CPM therapy. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) detected >0.03 ng/ml of CPM in 26% (23/88) of urine samples from 8 of 11 (72.7%) patients’ family caregivers, with a peak of 0.7 ng/ml from 24 to 48 h after administration. Since urine CPM concentrations in family caregivers varied after the first and second courses, the exposure risk factors were analyzed by scoring the PPE-wearing time index (caring minutes × PPE points from wearing masks, gloves, and/or gowns) and CPM adhesion of PPE items with the caring patterns of diaper change, washing body care, oral care, eating assistance, emotional support, and co-sleeping. The closest association was observed for CPM adhesion between oral care gloves and undershirts (correlation coefficient 0.67, p = 0.001). The mixed-effect model analysis indicated only a significant correlation between the PPE-wearing time index and emotional care (playing, cuddling, and physical contact) (p = 0.016). These results suggest that prolonged emotional support results in poor PPE protection, which increases the risk of exposure in family caregivers. Strict PPE care within 48 h after high-dose CPM controls the exposure to high-risk anticancer drugs in caregivers of pediatric patients.
•Urinary cyclophosphamide (CPM) levels in caregivers peaked from 24 to 48 h and remained detectable until 72 h after high-dose CPM therapy for pediatric cancer.•A significant correlation between personal protective equipment wearing time and emotional care recommends strict ware until 48 h of high-dose CPM therapy.
