It has long been suggested that the Ca2+-mechanisms are largely involved in generating the early afterdepolarization (EAD) as well as the delayed afterdepolarization (DAD). This view was examined in ...a quantitative manner by applying the lead potential analysis to a new human ventricular cell model. In this ventricular cell model, the tight coupled LCC-RyR model (CaRU) based on local control theory (Hinch et al. 2004) and ion channel models mostly based on human electrophysiological data were included to reproduce realistic Ca2+ dynamics as well as the membrane excitation. Simultaneously, the Ca2+ accumulation near the Ca2+ releasing site was incorporated as observed in real cardiac myocytes. The maximum rate of ventricular repolarization (−1.02 mV/ms) is due to IK1 (−0.55 mV/ms) and the rest is provided nearly equally by INCX (−0.20 mV/ms), INaL (−0.16 mV/ms) and INaT (−0.13 mV/ms). These INaL and INaT components are due to closure of the voltage gate, which remains partially open during the plateau potential. DADs could be evoked by applying high-frequency stimulations supplemented by a partial Na+/K+ pump inhibition, or by a microinjection of Ca2+. EADs was evoked by retarding the inactivation of INaL. The lead potential (VL) analysis revealed that IK1 and IKr played the primary role to reverse the AP repolarization to depolarizing limb of EAD. ICaL and INCX amplified EAD, while the remaining currents partially antagonized dVL/dt. The maximum rate of rise of EAD was attributable to the rapid activation of both ICaL (45.5%) and INCX (54.5%).
Chlorine is a principal disinfectant for food and environmental sanitation. Monitoring of free available chlorine (FAC) is essential for ensuring the efficacy of food disinfection processes that rely ...on chlorine. N,N‐diethyl‐p‐phenylenediamine (DPD) is commonly used for FAC monitoring. However, here, we show that upon contact with bovine serum albumin (BSA) or broiler carcasses, chlorite (HClO₂)‐based sanitizers acquire a pink colour, which can interfere with measurement of oxidized DPD absorbance at 513–550 nm. Alternatively, the pink colour did not interfere with 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)‐based FAC monitoring. The FAC levels of NaClO and weakly acidified chlorous acid water (WACAW) were first adjusted by the TMB method and the killing activity of these sanitizers towards methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and feline calicivirus (FCV) was compared in the presence or absence of 0·5% BSA. At 200 ppm FAC, NaClO lost its bactericidal activity against MRSA after 10‐min incubation with 0·5% BSA. Meanwhile, under the same conditions WACAW reduced the number of bacteria to below the detection limit. Similar results were obtained with FCV, indicating that the chlorite‐based WACAW sanitizer is relatively stable under organic‐matter‐rich conditions. Moreover, TMB is suitable for in situ FAC monitoring of chlorite‐based sanitizers in food and environmental disinfection processes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: For practical applications of chlorine in food processing, monitoring of FAC is critical to validate disinfection efficacy. In this study we found that chlorite‐based sanitizers acquired a pink colour upon contact with BSA or broiler carcasses. This pink colour interfered with FAC monitoring by methods that measure oxidized N,N‐diethyl‐p‐phenylenediamine absorbance between 513–550 nm. Alternatively, FAC levels of chlorite‐based sanitizers could be monitored using the absorbance of 3,3′,5,5′‐tetramethylbenzidine at 650 nm, which does not overlap with the acquired pink colour. These data provide valuable information for safety management of disinfection processes that use chlorite‐based sanitizers.
We present the properties of the ensemble variability V for nearly 5000 near-infrared active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the catalog of Quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei (13th Edition) and ...the SDss-DR7 quasar catalog. From three near-infrared point source catalogs, namely, Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MAss), Deep Near Infrared Survey (DENIS), and UKIDss/LAS catalogs, we extract 2MAss-DENIS and 2MAss-UKIDss counterparts for cataloged AGNs by cross-identification between catalogs. We further select variable AGNs based on an optimal criterion for selecting the variable sources. The sample objects are divided into subsets according to whether near-infrared light originates by optical emission or by near-infrared emission in the rest frame; and we examine the correlations of the ensemble variability with the rest-frame wavelength, redshift, luminosity, and rest-frame time lag. In addition, we also examine the correlations of variability amplitude with optical variability, radio intensity, and radio-to-optical flux ratio. The rest-frame optical variability of our samples shows negative correlations with luminosity and positive correlations with rest-frame time lag (i.e., the structure function, SF), and this result is consistent with previous analyses. However, no well-known negative correlation exists between the rest-frame wavelength and optical variability. This inconsistency might be due to a biased sampling of high-redshift AGNs. Near-infrared variability in the rest frame is anticorrelated with the rest-frame wavelength, which is consistent with previous suggestions. However, correlations of near-infrared variability with luminosity and rest-frame time lag are the opposite of these correlations of the optical variability; that is, the near-infrared variability is positively correlated with luminosity but negatively correlated with the rest-frame time lag. Because these trends are qualitatively consistent with the properties of radio-loud quasars reported by some previous studies, most of our sample objects are probably radio-loud quasars. Finally, we also discuss the negative correlations seen in the near-infrared SFs.
We present optical (B, V, Rc, Ic and y) and near-infrared (J, H, and Ks) photometric and spectroscopic observations of a classical nova V1280 Scorpii for five years from 2007 to 2011. Our photometric ...observations show a declining event in optical bands shortly after the maximum light, which took about 250 days to recover. This event was most probably caused by dust formation. The event was accompanied by a short (~30 days) re-brightening episode (~2.5 mag in V), which suggests that there had been some re-ignition of the surface nuclear burning. After 2008, the y band observations show a very long plateau at around y = 10.5 for more than 1000 days until April 2011 (~1500 days after the maximum light). The nova had taken a very long time (~50 months) to enter the nebular phase, according to a clear detection of both O iii 4959 and 5007 and is still continuing to generate the wind caused by H-burning. This finding suggests that historically V1280 Sco is evolving at its slowest ever measured rate. The interval from the maximum light (2007 February 16) to the beginning of the nebular phase is longer than any previously known slow novae: V723 Cas (18 months), RR Pic (10 months), or HR Del (8 months). It suggests that the mass of a white dwarf in the V1280 Sco system might be 0.6 M⊙ or lower. The distance, based on our measurements of the expansion velocity combined with the directly measured size of the dust shell, is estimated to be 1.1 ± 0.5 kpc.
Hydrogen ion reflection properties have been investigated following the injection of H+, H2+ and H3+ ions onto a polycrystalline W surface. Angle- and energy-resolved intensity distributions of both ...scattered H+ and H− ions are measured by a magnetic momentum analyzer. We have detected atomic hydrogen ions reflected from the surface, while molecular hydrogen ions are unobserved within our detection limit. The reflected hydrogen ion energy is approximately less than one-third of the incident beam energy for H3+ ion injection and less than a half of that for H2+ ion injection. Other reflection properties are very similar to those of monoatomic H+ ion injection. Experimental results are compared to the classical trajectory simulations using the ACAT code based on the binary collision approximation.
We propose near-infrared colour selection criteria to extract active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using the near-infrared colour-colour diagram (CCD) and predict near-infrared colour evolution with ...redshift. We first cross-identify two AGN catalogues with the 2MASS Point Source Catalogue, and confirm both the loci of quasars/AGNs in the near-infrared CCD and redshift-colour relations. In the CCD, the loci of over 70-80% of AGNs can be distinguished from the stellar locus. To examine the colours of quasars, we simulate near-infrared colours using the Hyperz code. Assuming a realistic quasar SED, we derive simulated near-infrared colours of quasars with redshift (up to z ~ 11). The simulated colours can reproduce not only the redshift-colour relations but also the loci of quasars/AGNs in the near-infrared CCD. We finally discuss the possibility of contamination by other types of objects. We compare the locus of AGNs with an other four types of objects (namely, microquasars, cataclysmic variables, low mass X-ray binaries, and massive young stellar objects), which have a radiation mechanism similar to that of AGNs. In the near-infrared CCD, each type of object is located at a position similar to the stellar locus. Accordingly, it is highly probable that we can differentiate between the four types of objects on the basis of their locus in a near-infrared CCD. We additionally consider contamination by distant normal galaxies. The near-infrared colours of several types of galaxies are also simulated using the Hyperz code. Although galaxies with z ~ 1 have near-infrared colours similar to those of AGNs, these galaxies are unlikely to be detected because they are very faint. In other words, few galaxies should contaminate the locus of AGNs in the near-infrared CCD. Consequently, we can extract reliable AGN candidates on the basis of the near-infrared CCD.
TARA (Telescope Array Radar) is a cosmic ray radar detection experiment colocated with Telescope Array, the conventional surface scintillation detector (SD) and fluorescence telescope detector (FD) ...near Delta, Utah, U.S.A. The TARA detector combines a 40 kW, 54.1 MHz VHF transmitter and high-gain transmitting antenna which broadcasts the radar carrier over the SD array and within the FD field of view, towards a 250 MS/s DAQ receiver. TARA has been collecting data since 2013 with the primary goal of observing the radar signatures of extensive air showers (EAS). Simulations indicate that echoes are expected to be short in duration (∼ 10 µs) and exhibit rapidly changing frequency, with rates on the order 1 MHz/µs. The EAS radar cross-section (RCS) is currently unknown although it is the subject of over 70 years of speculation. A novel signal search technique is described in which the expected radar echo of a particular air shower is used as a matched filter template and compared to waveforms obtained by triggering the radar DAQ using the Telescope Array fluorescence detector. No evidence for the scattering of radio frequency radiation by EAS is obtained to date. We report the first quantitative RCS upper limits using EAS that triggered the Telescope Array Fluorescence Detector.
We combine resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and model calculations in the Kondo lattice compound YbInCu4, a system characterized by a dramatic increase in Kondo temperature and associated valence ...fluctuations below a first-order valence transition at TAsymptotically = to42 K. The bulk-sensitive, element-specific, and valence-projected charge excitation spectra reveal an unusual quasigap in the Yb-derived state density which drives an instability of the electronic structure and renormalizes the low-energy effective Hamiltonian at the transition. Our results provide long-sought experimental evidence for a link between temperature-driven changes in the low-energy Kondo scale and the higher-energy electronic structure of this system.
IGF2, a maternally imprinted foetal growth factor gene, is implicated in many childhood tumours including hepatoblastoma (HB); however, the genetic and epigenetic alterations have not comprehensively ...been studied. We analysed the methylation status of the H19 differentially methylated region (DMR), loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and allelic expression of IGF2 in 54 HB tumours, and found that 12 tumours (22%) with LOH, 9 (17%) with loss of imprinting (LOI) and 33 (61%) with retention of imprinting (ROI). Biallelic and monoallelic IGF2 expressions correlated with hypermethylation and normal methylation of H19 DMR, respectively, in two tumours with LOI and seven tumours with ROI. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed minimal expression of H19 mRNA and substantial expression of IGF2 mRNA in tumours with LOH or LOI, and substantial expression of both H19 and IGF2 mRNAs in tumours with ROI. Increased IGF2 expression with predominant embryonic P3 transcript was found in the majority of HBs with ROI and foetal livers. In contrast to the earlier reports, our findings suggest that the disruption of the enhancer competition model reported in Wilms' tumour may also occur in HB. Both frequencies of LOH and LOI seem to be lower in HB than in Wilms' tumour, reflecting the different tissue origins.
