Internal gravity waves, the subsurface analogue of the familiar surface gravity waves that break on beaches, are ubiquitous in the ocean. Because of their strong vertical and horizontal currents, and ...the turbulent mixing caused by their breaking, they affect a panoply of ocean processes, such as the supply of nutrients for photosynthesis, sediment and pollutant transport and acoustic transmission; they also pose hazards for man-made structures in the ocean. Generated primarily by the wind and the tides, internal waves can travel thousands of kilometres from their sources before breaking, making it challenging to observe them and to include them in numerical climate models, which are sensitive to their effects. For over a decade, studies have targeted the South China Sea, where the oceans' most powerful known internal waves are generated in the Luzon Strait and steepen dramatically as they propagate west. Confusion has persisted regarding their mechanism of generation, variability and energy budget, however, owing to the lack of in situ data from the Luzon Strait, where extreme flow conditions make measurements difficult. Here we use new observations and numerical models to (1) show that the waves begin as sinusoidal disturbances rather than arising from sharp hydraulic phenomena, (2) reveal the existence of >200-metre-high breaking internal waves in the region of generation that give rise to turbulence levels >10,000 times that in the open ocean, (3) determine that the Kuroshio western boundary current noticeably refracts the internal wave field emanating from the Luzon Strait, and (4) demonstrate a factor-of-two agreement between modelled and observed energy fluxes, which allows us to produce an observationally supported energy budget of the region. Together, these findings give a cradle-to-grave picture of internal waves on a basin scale, which will support further improvements of their representation in numerical climate predictions.

Abstract
Despite sufficient wind forcing, internal waves in the South China Sea do not exhibit the strong near-inertial wave (NIW) peak that is typical in most of the world oceans. Using data from 10 ...contemporaneous moorings deployed in summer 2011, we show that strong isopycnal vertical tidal displacements transfer most of the near-inertial (NI) kinetic energy (KE) to frequencies higher than the inertial frequency in an Eulerian reference frame. Transforming to an isopycnal-following reference frame increases the KE at NI frequencies, suggesting the presence of NIWs. However, the projection onto a semi-Lagrangian coordinate system still underestimates the expected NI peak. To fully resolve NIWs requires the use of time-dependent vertical wavenumber–frequency spectra because the intrinsic frequency of the NIWs varies substantially, owing to Doppler shifting by lateral mesoscale flows. Here, we show NIW intrinsic frequency variations of ±0.2 cpd within few days, of similar magnitude as the observed variations of relative vorticity associated with the meandering Kuroshio.

July, 2016) were studied within a 10-year time series (2009-2018) combining aerial drone imagery, technical diving, and hydrographic surveys. The catastrophic disturbances triggered landslides that reshaped the shoreline, burying the seabed and, as a consequence, native sulfur accretions that were abundant on the seafloor disappeared. A significant reduction in venting activity and fluid flow was observed at the high-temperature YV. Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) maxima in surrounding seawater reached 3000-5000 µmol kg
, and Total Alkalinity (TA) drawdowns were below 1500-1000 µmol kg
lasting for one year. A strong decrease and, in some cases, depletion of dissolved elements (Cd, Ba, Tl, Pb, Fe, Cu, As) including Mg and Cl in seawater from shallow depths to the open ocean followed the disturbance, with a recovery of Mg and Cl to pre-disturbance concentrations in 2018. The WV and YV benthic megafauna exhibited mixed responses in their skeleton Mg:Ca and Sr:Ca ratios, not always following directions of seawater chemical changes. Over 70% of the organisms increased skeleton Mg:Ca ratio during rising DIC (higher CO
) despite decreasing seawater Mg:Ca ratios showing a high level of resilience. KST benthic organisms have historically co-existed with such events providing them ecological advantages under extreme conditions. The sudden and catastrophic changes observed at the KST site profoundly reshaped biogeochemical processes in shallow and offshore waters for one year, but they remained transient in nature, with a possible recovery of the system within two years.

Predicted survival may influence the treatment decision for patients with skeletal extremity metastasis, and PATHFx was designed to predict the likelihood of a patient dying in the next 24 months. ...However, the performance of prediction models could have ethnogeographical variations. We asked if PATHFx generalized well to our Taiwanese cohort consisting of 356 surgically treated patients with extremity metastasis.
We included 356 patients who underwent surgery for skeletal extremity metastasis in a tertiary center in Taiwan between 2014 and 2019 to validate PATHFx's survival predictions at 6 different time points. Model performance was assessed by concordance index (c-index), calibration analysis, decision curve analysis (DCA), Brier score, and model consistency (MC).
The c-indexes for the 1-, 3-, 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month survival estimations were 0.71, 0.66, 0.65, 0.69, 0.68, and 0.67, respectively. The calibration analysis demonstrated positive calibration intercepts for survival predictions at all 6 timepoints, indicating PATHFx tended to underestimate the actual survival. The Brier scores for the 6 models were all less than their respective null model's. DCA demonstrated that only the 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month predictions appeared useful for clinical decision-making across a wide range of threshold probabilities. The MC was < 0.9 when the 6- and 12-month models were compared with the 12-month and 18-month models, respectively.
In this Asian cohort, PATHFx's performance was not as encouraging as those of prior validation studies. Clinicians should be cognizant of the potential decline in validity of any tools designed using data outside their particular patient population. Developers of survival prediction tools such as PATHFx might refine their algorithms using data from diverse, contemporary patients that is more reflective of the world's population.

Abstract
Four current-meter moorings and 12 pressure sensor–equipped inverted echo sounders (PIES) were deployed during summer 2011 in the South China Sea. The goal of the experiment was to obtain ...synoptic observations of the large-amplitude nonlinear internal waves from the near field to the far field as they propagated west-northwest across the sea. The program was unique because it was the first to observe the latitudinal variability of the wave crests in addition to the transformations along a single east–west transect. The waves were strongest down the center of the PIES array along roughly 20°45′N and were weaker off axis in both directions. Both a-waves and b-waves arrived earlier in the south than the north, but with different lag times indicating different propagation directions and therefore different sources. The waves were classified by their arrival patterns and source locations and not by their amplitude or packet structure. The Stanford Unstructured Nonhydrostatic Terrain-Following Adaptive Navier–Stokes Simulator (SUNTANS) model, calibrated against the array, showed that the a-waves developed out of the internal tide spawned in the southern portion of the Luzon Strait and the b-waves originated in the north. The northern tides were refracted and suffered large dissipative losses over the shallow portion of the western ridge, whereas the southern tides propagated west-northwest unimpeded, which resulted in a-waves that were larger and appeared sooner than the b-waves. The results were consistent with previous observations that can now be understood in light of the full three-dimensional structure of the internal waves and tides in the northeastern South China Sea.
