This paper proposes a novel method for simulating a three-dimensional (3D) random field conditional on site data. It is based on the assumption of separable auto-correlation in the vertical and ...horizontal directions. This novel method adopts special simulation techniques so that it can handle incomplete site data (e.g., missing data at some depths). Moreover, it can simulate a 3D conditional random field in a computationally efficient way without the need to invert and store large matrices. The proposed method simulates a 3D conditional random field with two steps. The first step simulates the missing site data to make the site data complete. The second step simulates the conditional random field at locations not explored by the soundings/boreholes. A simulated example is adopted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
•A method for simulating a 3D random field conditioning on incomplete data is proposed.•The method can capture the marginal statistics and auto-correlation of the random field.•The method does not need to engage in mathematical operations of large matrices.
The hierarchical martensitic features in ultra-high strength stainless steel (UHSSS), including the prior austenite grains, martensite packets, blocks and laths with the descending size, were refined ...to various extents by employing different thermomechanical processes and then carefully characterized. Their relation to yield strength and impact toughness was analyzed. We conclude that the refinement of martensitic structures could lead to the significant increase of yield strength, which follows the Hall-Petch relation with the effect grain size defined by high angle boundaries (HABs). Impact toughness of UHSSS depends on the frequency and capability for retained austenite (RA) grains at both HABs and martensite lath boundaries to trap the propagating cracks via strain-induced transformation, in which the film-like RA grains at lath boundaries appear to make the greater contribution.

We hope that such a review provides a clear outlook of these novel functional materials for a broad range of scientists within different disciplinary areas and attracts more researchers to devote themselves to this interesting research field.
Thermally activated delayed fluorescence: harvesting dark triplet excitons to generate bright emissive singlet excitons.
Commercial carbazole has been widely used to synthesize organic functional materials that have led to recent breakthroughs in ultralong organic phosphorescence
, thermally activated delayed ...fluorescence
, organic luminescent radicals
and organic semiconductor lasers
. However, the impact of low-concentration isomeric impurities present within commercial batches on the properties of the synthesized molecules requires further analysis. Here, we have synthesized highly pure carbazole and observed that its fluorescence is blueshifted by 54 nm with respect to commercial samples and its room-temperature ultralong phosphorescence almost disappears
. We discover that such differences are due to the presence of a carbazole isomeric impurity in commercial carbazole sources, with concentrations <0.5 mol%. Ten representative carbazole derivatives synthesized from the highly pure carbazole failed to show the ultralong phosphorescence reported in the literature
. However, the phosphorescence was recovered by adding 0.1 mol% isomers, which act as charge traps. Investigating the role of the isomers may therefore provide alternative insights into the mechanisms behind ultralong organic phosphorescence

The stable and site-specific operation of transmission lines is a crucial safeguard for grid functionality. This study introduces a comprehensive optimization design method for transmission line ...crossing frame structures based on the Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO) algorithm, which integrates size, shape, and topology optimization. By utilizing the BBO algorithm to optimize the truss structure's design variables, the method ensures the structure's economic and practical viability while enhancing its performance. The optimization process is validated through finite element analysis, confirming the optimized structure's compliance with strength, stiffness, and stability requirements. The results demonstrate that the integrated design of size, shape, and topology optimization, as opposed to individual optimizations of size or shape and topology, yields the lightest structure mass and a maximum stress of 151.4 MPa under construction conditions. These findings also satisfy the criteria for strength, stiffness, and stability, verifying the method's feasibility, effectiveness, and practicality. This approach surpasses traditional optimization methods, offering a more effective solution for complex structural optimization challenges, thereby enhancing the sustainable utilization of structures.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a derivative of cinnamic acid. It is used in the treatment of heart head blood-vessel disease and exerts protective effects against hypoxia/ischemia-induced cell injury in the ...brain. This study investigated the potential neuroprotective effects of FA against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced brain injury in vivo and in vitro through hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Nissl staining assays, flow cytometry, Hoechst 33258 staining, quantitative PCR, western blot analysis and fluorescence microscopic analysis. In this study, models of cerebral I/R injury were established using rats and pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells. The results revealed that treatment with FA significantly attenuated memory impairment, and reduced hippocampal neuronal apoptosis and oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner. The results from in vitro experiments also indicated that FA protected the PC-12 cells against I/R-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and apoptosis by inhibiting apoptosis, Ca2+ influx, superoxide anion (O2−), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) production in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, FA inactivated the Toll-like receptor (TLR)/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) pathway. MyD88 overexpression abolished the neuroprotective effects of FA. On the whole, we found that FA attenuated memory dysfunction and exerted protective effects against oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by I/R injury by inhibiting the TLR4/MyD88 signaling pathway. This study supports the view that FA may be a promising neuroprotective agent for use in the treatment of cerebral ischemia.
Flexible hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (FHOFs) are quite rare but promising for applications in separation, sensing and host-guest chemistry. They are difficult to stabilize, making their ...constructions a major challenge. Here, a flexible HOF (named 8PN) with permanent porosity has been successfully constructed. Nine single crystals of 8PN with different pore structures are obtained, achieving a large-scale void regulation from 4.4% to 33.2% of total cell volume. In response to external stimuli, multimode reversible structural transformations of 8PN accompanied by changes in luminescence properties have been realized. Furthermore, a series of high-quality co-crystals containing guests of varying shapes, sizes, aggregation states and even amounts are obtained, showing that 8PN can adapt to different guests by regulating the molecular conformations and assembling forms of its building blocks. The unexpected flexibility of 8PN makes it a promising material for enriching the applications of existing porous materials.

In five studies, the authors examine the impact of an independent (vs. interdependent) mindset on consumer adoption of new products. Study 1 demonstrates that consumers in a predominantly independent ...(vs. interdependent) culture are more willing to adopt really new products, whereas consumers in a predominantly interdependent (vs. independent) culture are more willing to adopt incrementally new products. Studies 2 and 3 conceptually replicate these findings using situationally activated mindsets and demonstrate that this effect is driven by the perceived fit between the product’s newness level and the optimal level of distinctiveness consumers want. Finally, Studies 4a and 4b show that the presence of distinctiveness-dampening cues (i.e., popularity cues) and distinctiveness-enhancing cues (i.e., scarcity cues) can reverse the effect of self-perspective such that the independent self becomes less willing to adopt really new products and more willing to adopt incrementally new products than does the interdependent self. These findings offer practical implications for managing innovation adoption in both domestic and international marketplaces.
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and photonic devices play a pivotal role to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The recently emerging high-dynamic-range (HDR) mini-LED backlit LCDs ...significantly boost the image quality and brightness and reduce the power consumption for VR displays. Such a light engine is particularly attractive for compensating the optical loss of pancake structure to achieve compact and lightweight VR headsets. On the other hand, high-resolution-density, and high-brightness liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) is a promising image source for the see-through AR displays, especially under high ambient lighting conditions. Meanwhile, the high-speed LCoS spatial light modulators open a new door for holographic displays and focal surface displays. Finally, the ultrathin planar diffractive LC optical elements, such as geometric phase LC grating and lens, have found useful applications in AR and VR for enhancing resolution, widening field-of-view, suppressing chromatic aberrations, creating multiplanes to overcome the vergence-accommodation conflict, and dynamic pupil steering to achieve gaze-matched Maxwellian displays, just to name a few. The operation principles, potential applications, and future challenges of these advanced LC devices will be discussed.
Load participation is vital for the smart grid development. As an effective tool to improve reliability, stability, and financial efficiency of the power grids, demand response (DR) has brought ...significant financial and technical benefits to power systems. As one of the price-based DR programs with less control costs, the time-of-use (TOU) program has been applied as the default rate structure by many utility companies. To avoid financial risks and make the most profit from the market, utility companies treat TOU as an effective strategy to change customers' electricity consumption patterns. As reported in many literature, existing TOU programs are not as effective as expected in many developed countries due to the complexity of human behaviors and disparities of residential customers. To examine whether to obtain different outcomes of TOU on the residential customers in developing countries, actual utility usage data from residential consumers in Shanghai, China, are analyzed in this paper. The result shows current TOU in Shanghai, China, has similar trends as TOU in developed countries. With high penetration level of renewable energy, an effective TOU program is urgently needed in the utility industry. In recent years, a creative TOU pricing structure has been introduced at the Electrical Reliability Council of Texas deregulated market, and it shows that the introduced "zero pricing" strategy has a significant impact on customers' consumption patterns. The purpose of this research is to examine the key reasons that underlie ineffectiveness/effectiveness of TOU programs at residential level.
