Love, and the different manifestations of it, is a common theme in literature around the world. In Cosmopolitan Love, Sijia Yao examines the writings of D. H. Lawrence, a British writer whose ...literature focused primarily on interpersonal relationships in domestic settings, and Eileen Chang, a Chinese writer who migrated to the United States and explored Chinese heterosexual love in her writing. While comparing the writings of a Chinese writer and an English one, Yao avoids a direct comparison between East and West that could further enforce binaries. Instead, she uses the comparison to develop an idea of cosmopolitanism that shows how the writers are in conversation with their own culture and with each other. Both D. H. Lawrence and Eileen Chang wrote stories that are influenced by—but sometimes stand in opposition to—their own cultures. They offer alternative understandings of societies dealing with modernism and cultural globalization. Their stories deal with emotional pain caused by the restrictions of local politics and economics and address common themes of incestuous love, sexual love, adulterous love, and utopian love. By analyzing their writing, Yao demonstrates that the concept of love as a social and political force can cross cultural boundaries and traditions to become a basis for human meaning, the key to a cosmopolitan vision.

In this paper, we propose an optimization method based on behavioral data mining for the emergence of negative emotions in network public opinion in unexpected situations leading to problems that ...endanger social stability and use data mining to confirm the correspondence of the kNN algorithm. In the opinion propagation model, the radius of opinion radiation is assumed to use the network node density and distribution density as features of node exchange information. Then, the kNN algorithm is used to train the comment set for the analysis of user sentiment evolution of network opinion in the social network environment, and the web crawler technology is used to obtain the output interface data APIs of microblogs and WeChat, and the social media user comment data is used as the data for the empirical analysis of network opinion. snowNLP and kNN algorithms are used to analyze the sentiment score of network opinion and the sentiment score less than 0.5, i.e., the sentiment polarity. There were 15 days when the sentiment score tended to be negative and 65 days when the sentiment score was greater than 0.5, i.e., the sentiment polarity tended to be positive.
•Coupled regenerative shape memory actuator and piezoelectric generator.•Transition temperature gradient facilitates efficient utilization of low-grade heat.•57% second-law efficiency when ...considering realistic mechanical losses.•Relaxor ferroelectric ceramic has the highest energy conversion efficiency.•Potential to be integrated as a fully solid-state co-generation system.
Low-grade thermal energy is ubiquitous in nature with different scales. Being concise in nature, solid-state energy conversion technologies based on ferroic materials experienced fast development over the years, yet their efficiencies are still not as competitive as the conventional Rankine cycle. To improve the efficiency of solid-state generators, this study proposed a novel composite device leveraging the strain coupling between the regenerative shape-memory actuator and the piezoelectric generator. Taking the realistic losses into account, our experimentally validated numerical model indicated that the new concept has 14.4% efficiency, equivalent to 57% second-law efficiency, when the length and cross-sectional area of the shape-memory actuator and the piezoelectric generator is properly matched. It was also found that relaxor ferroelectric materials are more efficient than the baseline PZT ceramics. The impact and design guideline of other parameters were also investigated, including the utilization factor, transmission factor, and transition temperature. The proposed concept provides a new path for harvesting the low-grade thermal energy, and could potentially be integrated with caloric cooling counterparts to provide power and refrigeration simultaneously as a next-generation co-generation and tri-generation technology.
This paper proposes an alternative strategy of therapeutic healing and recovery of planetary existence in China by examining the structure of nostalgic feeling in two films by Jia Zhangke, a Chinese ...filmmaker who is noted for his distinct filmic narratives that unsettle and dislodge the authority of official, ideological accounts. His film, Still Life (Sanxia haoren 三峽好人), exposes the audience to powerful cinematic images of ruined homes, painful displacement, and cultural loss, which enable them to develop a strong nostalgia for the lost affinity with nature as well as Chinese cultural roots, so as to foresee the devastating consequences of the Three Gorges Dam project. Jia's latest short film Smog Journeys (Ren zai maitu 人在霾途) interweaves the realistic, nostalgic, and speculative fictional insights into the serious issue of smog in today's China. Since China embraced modernism at the turn of the twentieth century, the traditional belief in the harmony between humans and nature (天人合一) has been dissolved and abandoned. Taking cues from Svetlana Boym's term "reflective nostalgia," I argue that nostalgia, rather than a passive escapism or naive utopian pursuit, can serve as an effective means to resist the current money-driven progress and help Planet Earth recover and revitalize its future prospects by looking back.
As a modern Chinese woman writer who valued traditional Chinese culture and female subjectivity, Eileen Chang (Ailing Zhang 1920-1995) (1) has attracted more and more interest from academia and ...popular culture. Her literary fame has undergone dramatic ups-and-downs over the seventy years since she began publishing (1943-2013). Although she is now possessed of a respectable literary reputation, Chang was long considered merely as a popular story writer in China because of the bias towards the theme of women and love as well as women's literature (1943-1952). Later, as a diasporic writer in America where Orientalism was prevalent, Chang was submerged in grey oblivion (1955-1970s). Her literary fame has been gradually resurrected by the gains in momentum made by gender studies and multiculturalism (1970s-present). This paper examines the inexorable connection between the vicissitude of Chang's literary fame and social-political influences, and asserts that a canonical work is inevitably shaped by changing literary standards and social-political preferences. Key words Eileen Chang; literary fame; canonical work; reception; social-political preference
•The sintering of LiFePO4 precursor was combined with the reduction of graphene oxide.•The conducing network formed by graphene sheets can improve the kinetics of LiFePO4.•We investigated the effects ...of graphene coating amounts on LiFePO4 properties.•LiFePO4/graphene (92:8wt.) material exhibited superior electrochemical properties.
Olivine-type LiFePO4/graphene composite materials were synthesized via a high temperature solid-state method. In this paper, the sintering process of LiFePO4 precursor was conducted simultaneously with the reduction of graphene oxide, and then LiFePO4 with a thin and homogeneous graphene-shell coating can be obtained. The effects of different graphene coating amount on the structure and electrochemical properties of LiFePO4 cathode were investigated. Test results indicated that LiFePO4 material modified with high electrical conductive graphene exhibited a morphology of uniform and fine spherical particles with high crystallinity. LiFePO4/graphene (92:8wt.) cathode had the lowest charge transfer resistance among all tested samples. It delivered a capacity of 167mAhg−1 at 0.1C and could tolerate various discharge currents with a capacity decay rate of only 27.2% after cycled stepwise under 0.1C, 2C, 5C for 15 times, respectively.
Sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) can increase the mortality of critically ill patients and the incidence of chronic kidney disease in critically ill survivors. The main goal was to ...investigate the possible link between metabolic changes and sepsis-induced AKI development. The experimental animal model of sepsis-induced AKI was established by intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide in rats. Non-targeted metabolic screening of the renal cortex in the control and sepsis-induced AKI groups was carried out based on gas chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOFMS) technology. The data between the two groups were analyzed by combining univariate and multivariate statistical methods, and the metabolites associated with AKI in rats with sepsis were screened. By examining the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database, altered metabolic pathways associated with acute renal injury in sepsis were identified. The cross validated scores plot of orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) showed a distinct separation trend between the model and control groups in the profile of renal cortex metabolites, indicating a significant change in endogenous metabolites in the rat renal cortex. Further analysis and screening showed that 26 different metabolites were identified in the renal cortex between the two groups, mainly involving taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, pantothenic acid and CoA biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, and other metabolic pathways. The metabolic disorders of taurine, pantothenic acid, and phenylalanine in the renal cortex are related to the development of acute renal injury in sepsis. Correcting these metabolic disorders is expected to prevent and treat sepsis-induced AKI.
The mortality rate is high in critically ill patients due to the difficulty of diagnosis and treatment. Thus, it is very important to explore the predictive value of different indicators related to ...prognosis in critically ill patients.
This was a retrospective cohort study of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Sixth People's Hospital in Shanghai, China. A total of 1465 ICU patients had lactate values > 2.1 mmol/L at least once within 24 h of ICU admission, and arterial blood gas was monitored more than twice during the ICU stay.
The predictive value of lactate clearance at 24 h was not high, and the sensitivity and specificity were lower. The predictive value of the lactate level at baseline and the APACHE II score was higher than that of lactate clearance at 24 h in critically ill patients. The predictive value of the lactate level at baseline combined with the APACHE II score was higher than that of the lactate level at baseline or the APACHE II score alone. In addition, the predictive value of lactate clearance at 24 h combined with the APACHE II score was also significantly higher than that of lactate clearance at 24 h or the APACHE II score alone. In particular, the area under the ROC curve reached 0.900, the predictive value was markedly higher than that of the ROC alone, and the sensitivity and specificity were better when these three indicators were combined.
The combination of lactate level, lactate clearance and APACHE II score better predicts short-term outcomes in critically ill patients.
This study aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory activation of low-molecular-weight peptides from monkfish (
Lophius litulon
) roe (named MRP) on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppressed ...mice. Our results indicated that MRP (100 mg/kg/d BW) could significantly increase the body weight and immune organ index, and improve the morphological changes in the spleen and thymus of mice. These effects subsequently enhance the serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgM, and IgG. Furthermore, MRP could also improve CTX-induced oxidative stress, and activate the NF-κB and MAPK pathways in the spleen tissues. The findings reported herein indicate that MRP has a good immunomodulatory activation toward immunosuppressed mice, hence can potentially be developed as an immune adjuvant or functional food.
