Background: Pazopanib (PZP) may induce prolonged cardiac repolarization and proarrhythmic effects, similarly to other tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Objectives: To demonstrate PZP-induced prolonged ...cardiac repolarization and proarrhythmic electrophysiological effects and to investigate possible preventive effects of metoprolol and diltiazem on ECG changes (prolonged QT) in an experimental rat model. Methods: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley adult male rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n = 6). The first group (normal group) received 4 mL of tap water and the other groups received 100 mg/kg of PZP (Votrient® tablet) perorally, via orogastric tubes. After 3 hours, the following solutions were intraperitoneally administered to the animals: physiological saline solution (SP), to the normal group and to the second group (control-PZP+SP group); 1 mg/kg metoprolol (Beloc, Ampule, AstraZeneca), to the third group (PZP+metoprolol group); and 1mg/kg diltiazem (Diltiazem, Mustafa Nevzat), to the fourth group (PZP+diltiazem group). One hour after, and under anesthesia, QTc was calculated by recording ECG on lead I. Results: The mean QTc interval values were as follows: normal group, 99.93 ± 3.62 ms; control-PZP+SP group, 131.23 ± 12.21 ms; PZP+metoprolol group, 89.36 ± 3.61 ms; and PZP+diltiazem group, 88.86 ± 4.04 ms. Both PZP+metoprolol and PZP+diltiazem groups had significantly shorter QTc intervals compared to the control-PZP+SP group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Both metoprolol and diltiazem prevented PZP-induced QT interval prolongation. These drugs may provide a promising prophylactic strategy for the prolonged QTc interval associated with tyrosine kinase inhibitor use.
Minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures are gaining widespread acceptance with the advent and development of the femoral route for cardiopulmonary bypass. Aortic endoclamps are widely used and ...are one of the most important parts of these surgical techniques. This report presents iliac arterial intussusception from an aortic endoclamp catheter, which is a very rare complication with this type of device. Preventative strategies are presented.
Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) represents a major public health problem. We investigated the risk of SDB and associated factors in the Turkish adult population. We collected data by an ...interviewer-administered questionnaire in a nationwide representative sample of 5021 adults (2598 women, 2423 men) with a mean age of 40.7 years (SD:15.1) in 2010. High risk of SDB was defined as the positive response to at least two of the three categories in the Berlin questionnaire (BQ). High risk of SDB was found in 13.7% (men: 11.1%, women: 20.2%). High risk of SDB prevalence was not significantly different between the genders in the analysis stratified for BMI categories. Female gender, older age, lower level of education and smoking in the past were associated with high risk of SDB in the logistic regression analysis models adjusting for age and gender. After the adjustment for age, gender, smoking, BMI and educational status, high risk of SDB, and BQ Category 2 score were associated with previous hospitalization and cardiovascular diseases. Risk due to BQ Category 1 and BQ Category 2 was more than additive in the models for hypertension and heart disease for the age groups 45–65 years and 65 years and over. Higher prevalence of SDB and obesity among women in our population should be addressed in further studies. Association between high risk of SDB and cardiovascular diseases, if confirmed, indicates the public health importance of screening for SDB symptoms.
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of patients with primary peritoneal carcinoma (PPC), and the effectiveness and toxicity of first-line ...platinum/taxane combination therapy.
We retrospectively evaluated 79 patients with PPC, who were treated and followed up between December 2001 and August 2012 at 10 medical oncology clinics.
All patients were female, with a median age of 63 years (range 34-79 years). Histopathological diagnoses included primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC) (n = 69) and mixed epithelial carcinoma of the peritoneum (MEC) (n = 10). Patients received first-line treatment with carboplatin/paclitaxel (n = 67) or cisplatin/paclitaxel (n = 12) combination therapy. Overall response rate, median progression-free survival, and median survival time in the paclitaxel/carboplatin group and the paclitaxel/cisplatin group were 74.6 vs. 75%, 15.6 vs. 37.8 months, and 41 vs. 70.3 months, respectively. In multivariate analysis, favorable prognostic factors were: ECOG performance status 0 (p < 0.001) and optimal cytoreduction (p = 0.03).
PPC is a rare, heterogeneous disease. ECOG performance status and optimal cytoreduction are important prognostic factors regarding survival rates. Platinum/taxane combination therapy is an effective and tolerable regimen in this patient group.
We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of paclitaxel plus doxorubicin as a second-line treatment in patients with urothelial carcinoma, who had not responded to a prior platinum plus ...gemcitabine combination.
All patients received intravenous infusions of paclitaxel (175 mg/m(2)/h) and doxorubicin (50 mg/m(2)/30 min) on day 1. Chemotherapy courses were repeated every 21 days.
The median followup duration was 13.5 months (range 2.8-22.4 months). Complete and partial responses were observed in 2 (5.6%) and 10 (27.8%) patients, respectively. Median overall survival was 8.9 months (95% confidence interval (CI): 6.2-11.6). Median time to progression was 3.8 months (95% CI: 2.7-4.8). The most common hematologic toxicities were neutropenia (n = 21, 58.3%), thrombocytopenia (n = 10, 27.8%), and anemia (n = 9, 25%). The most common nonhematologic toxicities consisted of fatigue (n = 15, 41.7%), nausea/vomiting (n = 13, 36.1%), peripheral neuropathy (n = 11, 30.6%), and mucositis (n = 6, 16.7%). Dose reductions by 25-35% were performed in 6 (16.7%) patients because of grade 3/4 toxicity. Anthracycline-related heart failure did not occur.
3-weekly courses of cyclic paclitaxel plus doxorubicin were found to be effective and tolerable in patients with urothelial carcinoma, who had not responded to prior platinum- and gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.

Teeth and muscles play a very important role for occlusal equilibrium and function. When tooth loss begins, it may also affect the function of the muscle tissues.
The thickness of the masseter and ...anterior temporalis muscles were measured bilaterally in 30 healthy fully dentate adults and in 30 unilateral edentulous patients by using ultrasonographic imaging. All scans were carried out by the same radiologist to eliminate the inter-observer difference, using a real time scanner (Toshiba SSA- 270 A Japan). A 7.5 MHz linear transducer was used. The transducer was held against the cheek with light pressure. The effect of age, sex, duration of the partial edentulism, unilateral chewing habits of the individuals to the muscle thickness were also evaluated. In all subjects, facial proportion index was also determined.
No study has been found in the literature concerning the masticatory muscle thickness in unilateral partial edentulous patients. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to compare and establish the differences of the muscle thicknesses between dentate and edentulous sides in unilateral partial edentulous patients with ultrasonography and to test whether the variation in the thickness of the muscle is related to the variation in the facial morphology using the facial proportional indices in the study groups. In the present study, ultrasonography revealed a large variation in the thicknesses of the masseter and temporalis muscles in experimental and control groups, during both relaxed and contracted conditions. The thicknesses of the muscles in females during both relaxed and contracted conditions were less than those in males in both control and experimental groups. In experimental group, a high negative correlation was found between the thickness of the masseter muscle and Facial proportion Index (FPI) in females, however, the statistical analysis showed no significant difference in males. Also, a high negative correlation was found in control group, especially in females. There was no statistically significant relationship between thicknesses of the muscles and age of the subjects in both groups. There was no statistically significant relationship between unilateral chewing habits and muscle thickness. In this study, the duration of partial edentulism did not affect the thickness of the muscles.
Further research is required to study muscular atrophy for comparison with total edentulism.
