The authors report a rare case of clinically occult thyroid carcinoma that initially manifested as a metastatic mediastinal tumor with tracheal stenosis. A curative operation was performed by ...complete removal of the tumor through a median sternotomy approach combined with resection of the tracheal invasion. Histopathological examination revealed transition of a well-differentiated papillary carcinoma into a poorly differentiated component in the lesion invading the trachea, which suggested that this transition might have rendered the tumor more aggressive, leading to tracheal invasion.
1. The sulfite oxidases from various vertebrates, including rat, rabbit, chicken, frog, and eel, were partially purified and their physicochemical, kinetic, and immunochemical properties compared. ...The physicochemical and kinetic properties of these five enzymes were similar. 2. Antibody against the molybdenum-containing peptide prepared from purified rat liver sulfite oxidase was raised in rabbits. In Ouchterlony double diffusion and quantitative immunoprecipitation tests, the antibody could form precipitates with the enzymes from rats and rabbits, but no reaction was observed with enzymes from other sources. 3. The sulfite-cytochrome c reductase activity of the enzymes from these five animals were inhibited by the antibody, though the enzymes from chicken, frog, and cel were less sensitive to the antibody than those from rat and rabbit. 4. The inhibition of binding between 3H-labeled rat sulfite oxidase and its antibody by unlabeled enzymes from other animals demonstrated that 10 to 20% of the antibody could cross-react with these enzymes.
The surface charge of Bacillus megaterium QM B1551 spores was estimated to be negative, ‐0.2 and ‐0.4 μeq/mg by colloidal titration using glycol chitosan (GCh) and methylglycol chitosan (MGCh), ...respectively, as positive colloids. MGCh, which reacts with all of the negatively charged groups including carboxylate, inhibited the second stage of the germination to result in semirefractile spores, but GCh, which reacts only with strong acidic groups such as phosphate, did not. The spores produced in a medium with limited phosphate had coats with low phosphate content and carried less negative charge, and they were induced to germinate with 0.4 mm KNO3, which is one‐tenth of the minimum concentration required for the germination of the control spores. A similar increase in germinability was observed in spores incubated with calcium acetate.
These results suggest that the role of the surface charge in germination is as follows. Strong acidic groups (such as phosphate) in the coat may block the action of ionic germinants and act as a barrier against the initiation of ionic germination. Positively charged compounds (such as calcium) may compensate for this blocking effect. Weak acidic groups (such as carboxylate) may be involved in the later stage of germination.
This study reports on a method of making the fatigue design of bolted joints. Two types of bolted joins are treated - one is the simplest cylindrical joint. The following conclusions are obtained ...through stress analysis and fatigue tests of the above-mentioned bolted joints; (1) A method is proposed for expressing the load applied to the bolt in joints by plotting the dynamic stresses of the bolt on Haigh diagram, taking the maximum load and the preload as parameters; (2) A stress analysis of the T-flange bolts is performed. The analytical results show good agreement with the experimental results measured with strain gages; (3) It is verified by the fatigue test that fatigue design of the T-flange bolts can be done by comparing the above-mentioned load and the fatigue strength of the bolts.
This study aimed to measure the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes of annual stroke admissions compared with those before the pandemic in Japan. We conducted an observational, ...retrospective nationwide survey across 542 primary stroke centers in Japan. The annual admission volumes for acute stroke within 7 days from onset between 2019 as the pre-pandemic period and 2020 as the pandemic period were compared as a whole and separately by months during which the epidemic was serious and prefectures of high numbers of infected persons. The number of stroke patients declined from 182,660 in 2019 to 178,083 in 2020, with a reduction rate of 2.51% (95% confidence interval CI, 2.58%-2.44%). The reduction rates were 1.92% (95% CI, 1.85%-2.00%; 127,979-125,522) for ischemic stroke, 3.88% (95% CI, 3.70%-4.07%, 41,906-40,278) for intracerebral hemorrhage, and 4.58% (95% CI, 4.23%-4.95%; 13,020-12,424) for subarachnoid hemorrhage. The admission volume declined by 5.60% (95% CI, 5.46%-5.74%) during the 7 months of 2020 when the epidemic was serious, whereas it increased in the remaining 5 months (2.01%; 95% CI, 1.91%-2.11%). The annual decline in the admission volume was predominant in the five prefectures with the largest numbers of infected people per million population (4.72%; 95% CI, 4.53%-4.92%). In conclusion, the acute stroke admission volume declined by 2.51% in 2020 relative to 2019 in Japan, especially during the months of high infection, and in highly infected prefectures. Overwhelmed healthcare systems and infection control practices may have been associated with the decline in the stroke admission volume during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The standardization of a fatigue testing method is very important for collecting fatigue strength data for threaded fasteners. The Japanese Industrial Standard on this testing method was published by ...taking account of the IS0 Standard and the JSME Standard. In the procedure of drafting the above JIS, experimental researches and statistical discussions were conducted and the main conclusions are as follows : ( 1 ) Three companies in the first-step experiment and six companies in the second-step experiment performed the fatigue tests, and no confusion resulted in the application of the 14 S-N testing method according to the JSME Standard. ( 2 ) Based on the 14 S-N testing method, the experiments of the one-way classification model and the two-way classification model were performed, and the method of analysis of variance for such experimental results is shown.
It is difficult to predict perfectly the fatigue strength of a bolt in joints at the design stage since many factors influence the load on the bolt. This study treats the possibility of preventing ...the fatigue fracture of a bolt by detecting the fatigue crack at the thread root at an early stage by means of an ultrasonic flaw detector. A method is discussed in which a crack is initiated at the bolt thread root near the top surface of the nut, in the mating threads, by shortening the bolt pitch slightly against the nut pitch. By using this method, it is hoped that the period from the detection of the crack to the fracture will be lengthened. From the results of fatigue tests, it is shown that pitch modification is effective in the case of relatively low mean stress. Steel SCM435 is employed. 5 ref.--AA
A case of agenesis of the left internal carotid artery with an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery was reported in detail. The patient was a 48-year-old man who had an episode of ...subarachnoid hemorrhage about 10 years ago. This time left heminumbness and motor weakness of the left lower extremity occured and he was brought our hospital. Right common carotid angiography, left retrograde brachial serial angiography and aortography demonstrated an agenesis of the left internal carotid artery, an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery, tortuous megadolic hobasilar artery and anomalies on the circle of Willis such as absence of supra optic portion of the right anterior cerebral artery, and large left posterior communicating artery. We confirmed latter findings by operation. After successful neck clipping of the aneurysm, his clinical findings were remarkably improved.
