The Hayabusa2 spacecraft investigated the small asteroid Ryugu, which has a rubble-pile structure. We describe an impact experiment on Ryugu using Hayabusa2's Small Carry-on Impactor. The impact ...produced an artificial crater with a diameter >10 meters, which has a semicircular shape, an elevated rim, and a central pit. Images of the impact and resulting ejecta were recorded by the Deployable CAMera 3 for >8 minutes, showing the growth of an ejecta curtain (the outer edge of the ejecta) and deposition of ejecta onto the surface. The ejecta curtain was asymmetric and heterogeneous and it never fully detached from the surface. The crater formed in the gravity-dominated regime; in other words, crater growth was limited by gravity not surface strength. We discuss implications for Ryugu's surface age.
Context.
The Hayabusa2 spacecraft launched by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has been conducting observations of the asteroid (162173) Ryugu since June 2018. The Telescopic Optical Navigation ...Camera (ONC-T) onboard Hayabusa2 has obtained thousands of images under a variety of illumination and viewing conditions.
Aims.
Our objective is to examine and validate the camera calibration, derive a photometric correction for creating global albedo maps, and to interpret the photometric modeling results to characterize the surface of Ryugu.
Methods.
We observed (162173) Ryugu with the Gemini-South telescope, and combined these measurements with other published ground-based observations of the asteroid. The ground-based observations were compared with the data obtained by ONC-T in order to validate the radiometric calibration mutually. We used a combination of the Hapke disk-integrated and disk-resolved model equations to simultaneously analyze the combined ground- and spacecraft-based data.
Results.
The average spectrum of Ryugu was classified as Cb-type following the SMASSII taxonomy and C/F-type following the Tholen taxonomy based on spacecraft observations. We derived Hapke model parameters for all seven color filters, which allowed us to photometrically correct images to within an error of <10% for ~80% of the image pixels used in the modeling effort. Using this model, we derived a geometric albedo of 4.0 ± 0.5% (

band) for Ryugu. The average reflectance factor at the standard illumination condition was 1.87 ± 0.14% in the
v
band. Moreover we measured a phase reddening of (2.0 ± 0.7) × 10
−3
μ
m
−1
deg
−1
for Ryugu, similar to that observed for the asteroid (101955) Bennu.
Conclusions.
The global color map showed that the general trend was for darker regions to also be redder regions, however there were some distinct exceptions to this trend. For example, Otohime Saxum was bright and red while Kibidango crater was dark and blue. The darkness and flatness of Ryugu’s reflectance might be caused by a high abundance of organic materials.
Intracranial hemorrhage due to hyperperfusion syndrome is a severe carotid artery stent placement complication of extremely high-grade stenosis, causing hemodynamic insufficiency. To prevent ...hyperperfusion syndrome, we attempted intentional residual stent stenosis and implemented "gentle" carotid artery stent placement, defined as carotid artery stent placement using a closed-cell stent coupled with slight balloon predilation, without balloon postdilation. Gradual stent expansion was expected. We investigated the incidence of hyperperfusion syndrome and long-term outcomes after gentle carotid artery stent placement.
We included patients who underwent carotid artery stent placement for extremely high-grade stenosis from January 2015 to March 2019. We defined extremely high-grade stenosis as carotid stenosis with conventional angiographic "slow flow" and a reduced MCA signal intensity on MRA. A reduced MCA signal intensity was defined as MCA with a relative signal intensity of <0.9 in the ipsilateral compared with the contralateral MCA. We evaluated the stent diameter, CBF on SPECT, hyperperfusion syndrome, and intracranial hemorrhage. We defined hyperperfusion syndrome as a triad of ipsilateral headache, seizure, and hemiparesis.
Twenty-eight of the 191 patients met our inclusion criteria. After carotid artery stent placement, their median minimal stent diameter was 2.9 mm, which expanded to 3.9 mm at 4 months. Neither cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome nor intracranial hemorrhage occurred.
The gentle carotid artery stent placement strategy for intentional residual stent stenosis may prevent hyperperfusion syndrome in high-risk patients. Stents spontaneously dilated in 4 months.
Adeno-associated virus is the leading viral vector for gene therapy. AAV-DJ is a recombinant variant developed for tropism to the liver. The AAV-DJ structure has been determined to 1.56 Å resolution ...through cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Only apoferritin is reported in preprints at 1.6 Å or higher resolution, and AAV-DJ nearly matches the highest resolutions ever attained through X-ray diffraction of virus crystals. However, cryo-EM has the advantage that most of the hydrogens are clear, improving the accuracy of atomic refinement, and removing ambiguity in hydrogen bond identification. Outside of secondary structures where hydrogen bonding was predictable a priori, the networks of hydrogen bonds coming from direct observation of hydrogens and acceptor atoms are quite different from those inferred even at 2.8 Å resolution. The implications for understanding viral assembly mean that cryo-EM will likely become the favored approach for high resolution structural virology.
Images from the Optical Navigation Camera system (ONC) onboard the Hayabusa2 spacecraft show the MASCOT lander during its descent to the surface of asteroid (162173) Ryugu. We used results from a ...previous stereo-photogrammetric analysis that provided precise ONC image orientation data (camera position and pointing), ONC orthoimages, and an ONC-based 3D surface model to combine them with the visibilities of MASCOT itself and its shadow on-ground within the ONC images. We integrated additional information from instruments onboard MASCOT (MASMag, MARA, MASCam) and derived MASCOT’s release position and modeled its free-fall descent path and its velocity over 350 s from its release at ∼41 m altitude above ground until its first contact with the surface of Ryugu. After first contact, MASCOT bounced over the surface of Ryugu for 663 s and came to rest at its first settlement point after four intermediate surface contacts. We again used ONC images that show MASCOT and partly its shadow and reconstructed the bouncing path and the respective velocities of MASCOT. The achieved accuracy for the entire descent and bouncing path is ∼0.1 m (1σ).
We present simultaneous observations of aurorae at Jupiter from the Hubble Space Telescope and Hisaki, in combination with the in situ measurements of magnetic field, particles, and radio waves from ...the Juno Spacecraft in the outer magnetosphere, from ~ 80RJ to 60RJ during 17 to 22 March 2017. Two cycles of accumulation and release of magnetic flux, named magnetic loading/unloading, were identified during this period, which correlate well with electron energization and auroral intensifications. Magnetic reconnection events are identified during both the loading and unloading periods, indicating that reconnection and unloading are independent processes. These results show that the dynamics in the middle magnetosphere are coupled with auroral variability.

Despite advances, challenges remain for less invasive imaging of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) using computed tomography (CT) angiography. The application of dual-energy imaging to ...PAOD has been reported to improve the diagnostic accuracy of this application; however, severe arteriosclerosis with heavy arterial wall calcification still hampers definitive lesion characterisation, especially in distal and smaller arteries. Recently an ultra-high resolution scanner has been introduced. In combination with advances in post-processing, such as subtraction techniques, these developments may overcome some of the current challenges and allow far more detailed characterisation of PAOD non-invasively. The aim of this review is to describe our current experience with ultra-high resolution CT in combination with subtraction and discuss the potential advantages of their application for peripheral angiography.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease, resulting in joint pain, impaired movement, and structural changes. As the ability of joint tissue to resist stress is mainly ...imparted by fibrillar collagens in the extracellular matrix, changes in the composition and structure of collagen fibers contribute to the pathological remodeling observed in OA joints that includes cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone (SCB) sclerosis, and meniscal damage. Using the established OA model of destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) in C57BL/6J mice, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the content and structure of collagen fibers in the articular cartilage, subchondral bone, and menisci using complementary techniques, which included second harmonic generation microscopy and immunofluorescence staining. We found that regions exposed to increased mechanical stress in OA mice, typically closest to the site of injury, had increased collagen fiber thickness, dysregulated fiber formation, and tissue specific changes in collagen I and II (Col I and Col II) expression. In cartilage, OA was associated with decreased Col II expression in all regions, and increased Col I expression in the anterior and posterior regions. Col I fiber thickness was increased in all regions with disorganization in the center region. In the superficial SCB, all regions exhibited increased Col I expression and fiber thickness in OA mice; no changes were detected in the deeper regions of the subchondral bone except for increased Col I fiber thickness. In the menisci, OA led to increased Col I and Col II expression in the vascular and avascular regions of the anterior meniscus with increased Col I fiber thickness in these regions. Similar changes were observed only in the vascular region of the posterior meniscus. Our findings provide, for the first time, comprehensive insights into the microarchitectural changes of extracellular matrix in OA and serve as guidelines for studies investigating therapies that target collagenous changes as means to impede the progression of osteoarthritis.
