Exposure to metals/metalloids from both the natural environment and anthropogenic sources have a complex influence on human health. However, relatively few studies have explored the relations of exposure to multiple metals/metalloids with mortality. Therefore, this prospective study aims to examine the relations of multiple metal/metalloids exposures with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality.
A total of 6155 participants within the Dongfeng-Tongji (DF-TJ) cohort were involved in this analysis, which were followed for mortality until December 31, 2018. We applied inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure baseline plasma concentrations of 23 metals. We utilized Cox regression models to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause and CVD mortality associated with metal concentrations. We proposed plasma metal score to assess the simultaneous exposure to multiple metals through summing each metal concentration weighted by the regression coefficients with all-cause mortality.
During the follow-up (mean duration, 9.8 years), we ascertained 876 deaths, including 416 deaths of CVD (157 deaths of coronary heart disease and 259 deaths of stroke). In the multiple-metals model, after adjusting for potential confounders, plasma copper, molybdenum, and vanadium were positively associated with all-cause mortality, whereas manganese, selenium, and thallium were negatively associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, with adjusted HRs (95% Confidence Interval, CI) of the fourth quartiles were 1.73 (1.42–2.11, P-trend < 0.001) for copper, 1.33 (1.09–1.63, P-trend = 0.005) for molybdenum, 1.43 (1.16–1.77, P-trend < 0.001) for vanadium, 0.74 (0.58–0.94, P-trend = 0.005) for manganese, 0.68 (0.56–0.83, P-trend < 0.001) for selenium, and 0.74 (0.59–0.92, P-trend = 0.002) for thallium, respectively. Positive associations were observed between plasma copper, molybdenum, vanadium concentrations and CVD mortality, whereas negative associations were found for plasma selenium and thallium concentrations with CVD mortality in the multiple-metals model. Compared with the first quartiles, the HRs of fourth quartiles were 1.94 (1.45–2.58, P-trend < 0.001) for copper, 1.72 (1.26–2.35, P-trend < 0.001) for molybdenum, 1.81 (1.32–2.47, P-trend < 0.001) for vanadium, 0.67 (0.50–0.89, P-trend = 0.003) for selenium, and 0.58 (0.41–0.81, P-trend < 0.001) for thallium, respectively. The plasma metal score was significantly associated with higher risks of all-cause and CVD death in dose–response fashions. When compared with the first quartiles of plasma metal score, the HRs of fourth quartiles were 2.16 (1.76–2.64; P-trend < 0.001) for all-cause mortality and 3.00 (2.24–4.02; P-trend < 0.001) for CVD mortality.
The study indicated that several plasma metals/metalloids were key determinants and predictors of all-cause and CVD death in the Chinese population. Our findings highlighted the importance to comprehensively assess and monitor multiple metals/metalloids exposures.
The Ordos Basin is the largest and most important intracontinental sedimentary depression in China, and a significant amount of crude oil resources has developed within this Mesozoic formation. ...High-grade organic-rich shale is prevalent in the large-scale areas of the Chang 7 sedimentary stage and provides essential hydrocarbon resources for abundant oil enrichment in the Mesozoic. This research investigated the geochemical characteristics of Chang 7 shale using core samples and well logs and via laboratory tests. In addition, the microscopic components of the shale organic matter (OM), biological marker compounds, carbon isotopes, enrichment grade of trace elements, and elemental ratio were analysed systematically. Moreover, the aspects related to the shale OM source, sedimentary environment and resource potential were evaluated. Our results revealed that spherical alginate and calcium spherical alginate were predominant in the micropetrological components of the shale. Many biomarkers, including n-alkanes, steranes and terpanes, were detected in the gas chromatography – mass spectrometry spectra. An analysis of n-alkanes, regular sterane shapes (C21−/C22− and C26+C27/C28+C29), odd–even predominance index (OEP) and carbon preference index (CPI) values and carbon isotope distributions showed that OM was produced from aquatic organisms. The indicators of trace elements, such as Sr/Ba and V/V+Ni, combined with the biomarker compound in Pr/Ph and the gammacerane index showed the presence of a semi-deep – deep lake environment containing fresh–brackish water. In addition, the hydrocarbon conversion rate index and shale rock pyrolysis parameters revealed that Chang 7 has a high hydrocarbon generation ability and hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency.
Background
Gaming disorder, including internet gaming disorder (IGD), was recently defined by the World Health Organization as a mental disease in the 11th Revision of the International ...Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Thus, reducing IGD is warranted. Maladaptive cognitions related to internet gaming (MCIG) have been associated with IGD, while impulsivity, self-control, parental influences, and peer influences are key risk factors of IGD. Previous literature suggests that MCIG is associated with the aforementioned 4 risk factors and IGD, and may thus mediate between these risk factors and IGD. These potential mediations, if significant, imply that modification of MCIG may possibly alleviate these risk factors’ harmful impacts on increasing IGD. These mediation hypotheses were tested in this study for the first time.
Objective
This study tested the mediation effects of MCIG between intrapersonal factors (impulsivity and self-control) and IGD, and between interpersonal factors (parental influences and peer influences) and IGD among adolescents in China.
Methods
An anonymous, cross-sectional, and self-administered survey was conducted among secondary school students in classroom settings in Guangzhou and Chengdu, China. All grade 7 to 9 students (7 to 9 years of formal education) of 7 secondary schools were invited to join the study, and 3087 completed the survey. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) checklist was used to assess IGD. MCIG was assessed by using the Chinese version of the Revised Internet Gaming Cognition Scale. Impulsivity, self-control, and parental or peer influences were measured by using the motor subscale of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, the Brief Self-Control Scale, and the modified interpersonal influence scale, respectively. Structural equation modeling was conducted to examine the mediation effects of MCIG between these risk factors and IGD.
Results
The prevalence of IGD was 13.57% (418/3081) and 17.67% (366/2071) among all participants and adolescent internet gamers, respectively. The 3 types of MCIG (perceived rewards of internet gaming, perceived urges for playing internet games, and perceived unwillingness to stop playing without completion of gaming tasks) were positively associated with IGD. Impulsivity, self-control, parental influences, and peer influences were all significantly associated with the 3 types of MCIG and IGD. The 3 types of MCIG partially mediated the associations between the studied factors and IGD (effect size of 30.0% to 37.8%).
Conclusions
Impulsivity, self-control, and interpersonal influences had both direct and indirect effects via MCIG on IGD. Modifications of the 3 types of MCIG can potentially reduce the harmful impacts of impulsivity and interpersonal influences on IGD and enhance the protective effect of self-control against IGD. Future longitudinal studies are warranted.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at an increased risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and warrant COVID-19 vaccination to reduce nosocomial infections. This study investigated: (1) the prevalence ...of behavioral intention of COVID-19 vaccination (BICV) under eight scenarios combining vaccines' effectiveness/safety/cost, plus two general scenarios of free/self-paid vaccination given governmental/hospital recommendations, (2) perceptions involving preferred timing of COVID-19 vaccination and impacts of various attributes on BICV, and (3) factors of BICV based on the Health Belief Model. An anonymous online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2,254 full-time doctors/nurses in three Chinese provinces during 10/2020-11/2020. The prevalence of BICV was 75.1%/68.0% among nurses/doctors under the most optimum scenario of this study (free/80% effectiveness/rare mild side effects); it dropped to 64.6%/56.5% if it costed 600 Yuan (USD90). Similar prevalence was obtained (72.7%/71.2%) if the vaccination was recommended by the government/hospitals but dropped to <50% if effectiveness was 50% or mild side effects were common; 13.0% preferred to take up COVID-19 vaccination at the soonest (81.8% would wait and see). Scientific proof (completion of phase III clinical trials and approval from health authorities) was rated the highest in its impacts on vaccination decision, followed by vaccines' performance, and then logistics. Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that perceived severity, perceived barriers, cues to action, and self-efficacy (but neither perceived susceptibility nor perceived barriers) were significantly associated with the two BICV outcomes. The coverage of COVID-19 vaccination would be high only if the vaccines perform well. Health promotion may take the findings into account.

Refractory wounds are frequent and protracted diabetes or postoperative complications that greatly affect the quality of life and mental health of patients. As a result of repeated dressing replacements and local debridement of the existing therapeutic therapies, freshly formed granulation is once more infiltrated by inflammation and eliminated, which delays the healing process. Herein, the improved Fryetes' method, which retained most of the active factors in the extracellular matrix, was developed to prepare injectable decellularized extracellular matrix hydrogels (dECMH) from human umbilical cord tissue. The physical, biochemical, in vivo and in vitro biological properties were analysed in detail. The results showed that the pre-gel exhibited good injectability and could form the hydrogel within 30 min. Biochemical analysis indicated that the prepared decellularized extracellular matrix retained abundant structural proteins and wound healing-related growth factors. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of dECMH and the extremely high migration and proliferation capacities of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in the hydrogels. Thus, the injectability, gel-forming ability, and excellent biological characteristics of the hydrogel are highly compatible with refractory wounds with various irregular shapes, showing great potential for clinical application in wound repair.
This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety (infection events) between rituximab (RTX), tacrolimus (TAC), mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and cyclophosphamide (CYC) as induction therapies in ...lupus nephritis (LN).
Electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library, were searched from inception up to December 9, 2021. Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to combine the direct and indirect evidence of different drugs for LN patients. The pooled relative effects were shown using odds ratios (ORs) and 95% credible intervals (CrIs).
Nineteen studies (1,566 patients) met the inclusion criteria and were selected in the present study. The network meta-analysis reported that no statistically significant differences were found in partial remission (PR) and infection among the four drugs. RTX showed a significantly higher complete remission (CR) than MMF (OR = 2.60, 95% CrI = 1.00-7.10) and seemed to be more effective than CYC (OR = 4.20, 95% CrI = 1.70-14.00). MMF had a better CR than CYC (OR = 1.60, 95% CrI = 1.00-3.20). TAC presented a better overall response than CYC (OR = 3.70, 95% CrI = 1.20-12.00). Regarding CR and overall response, the maximum surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values were 96.94% for RTX and 80.15% for TAC. The maximum SUCRA value of infection reaction was 74.98% for RTX and the minimum value was 30.17% for TAC, respectively.
RTX and TAC were the most effective drugs for induction remission in LN. Among the four drugs, TAC had the lowest probability of infection, and RTX showed the highest probability of experiencing an infection. This meta-analysis could not conclude about other adverse events.

The aim of the present study was to assess the anti-inflammatory effect of ...Suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS1) on lipopolysac- charide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and to investigate its potential mechanisms.
The in vitro ulcerative colitis model was established by using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Western blot- ting was used to detect the protein expression levels of SOCS1, JAK2, STAT3, and VDR. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the mRNA expression of SOCS1, miR-222-3p, and VDR. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to measure the levels of inflammatory cytokines. A luciferase assay assessed the binding of SOCS1 to miR-222-3p. A total of 15 patients with ulcerative colitis and 18 healthy controls were recruited. The expression levels of SOCS1 and miR-222-3p in the colonic mucosa tissues of patients with ulcerative colitis and healthy controls were determined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction.
SOCS1 upregulation inhibited the lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 cells. SOCS1 was confirmed to be tar- geted by miR-222-3p. Silencing SOCS1 significantly abolished the inhibitory effects of miR-222-3p downregulation on inflammation. MiR-222-3p activated STAT3 signaling and reduced VDR expression by targeting SOCS1 in lipopolysaccharide-treated RAW264.7 cells. Additionally, miR-222-3p expression was upregulated in ulcerative colitis patients (P = 5.16E-10), while SOCS1 (P = 2.75E-10) and VDR (P = 52.5E-9) expression was downregulated in ulcerative colitis patients. Endoscopic scores (UCEIS) revealed significant positive cor- relation with miR-222-3p and negative correlation with SOCS1 and VDR.
MiR-222-3p targets SOCS1 to aggravate the inflammatory response by suppressing VDR and activating STAT3 signaling in ulcerative colitis.
Purpose
Intrauterine adhesion (IUAs) in women is a debatable topic and there is no clear consensus in its management and treatment strategies. Previous treatment measures have limitations which ...necessitates to consider effective measures for prevention of recurrence of IUAs. Hence, the aim of this study to explore the efficacy and safety of intrauterine infusion of autologous platelet gel (APG) and medical chitosan in preventing recurrence of IUAs in females after transcervical resection of adhesion (TCRA).
Methods
A prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted among 80 patients presented with moderate to severe IUAs. Patients were randomized into two groups, APG group (
n
= 40) and medical chitosan group (
n
= 40). All patients were injected with either APG or medical chitosan after TCRA.
Results
The postoperative recurrence rate of adhesions in APG group was significantly lower than those in medical chitosan group (21% vs 49%). The median AFS score during the second-look hysteroscopy was significantly lower in APG group than in medical chitosan group (
P
= 0.008). The median AFS score reduction after TCRA surgery was significantly higher in APG group than in medical chitosan group (median, 95% CI 7.000, 6.0 to 8.3 vs. 6.000, 5.0 to 7.0,
P
= 0.004). Subgroup analysis of platelet concentration (1000 as cut-off value) into high- and low-dose subgroups reported no significant correlation existed between APG and baseline characteristics, recurrence rate and postoperative AFS reduction score except for previous intrauterine operation (
P
< 0.05).
Conclusion
Thus, after TCRA, intrauterine injections of APG provides better efficacy and safety compared with intrauterine injections of medical chitosan in preventing recurrence of intrauterine adhesions.
Central obesity has increased rapidly over the past decade and posed a substantial disease burden worldwide. Exposure to metals/metalloids has been acknowledged to be involved in the development of ...central obesity through regulation of cortisol, insulin resistance, and glucocorticoid receptor reduction. Despite the importance, it is lack of prospective study which comprehensively evaluate the relations between multiple metals exposure and central obesity. We explored the prospective associations of plasma metal concentrations with central obesity in a prospective study of the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort. The present study included 2127 participants with a 6.87-year mean follow-up duration. We measured 23 plasma metal/metalloid concentrations at baseline. The associations between metals and incident central obesity were examined utilizing the Cox proportional hazard regression in single and multiple metals models. Additionally, we applied elastic net (ENET), Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), plasma metal score (PMS), and quantile-based g-computation (Qgcomp) models to explore the joint associations of metal mixtures with central obesity. After adjusting potential confounders, we found significant associations of plasma manganese (Mn) and thallium (Tl) concentrations with a higher risk of central obesity, whereas plasma rubidium (Rb) concentration was associated with a lower risk of central obesity both in single and multiple metals models (all FDR <0.05). The ENET and Qqcomp models verified similar metals (Mn, Rb, and Tl) as important predictors for central obesity. The results of both BKMR model and PMS suggested cumulative exposure to metal mixtures was associated with a higher risk of central obesity. Our findings suggested that co-exposure to metals was associated with a higher risk of central obesity. This study expands our knowledge that the management of metals/metalloids exposure may be beneficial for the prevention of new-onset central obesity, which may subsequently alleviate the disease burden of late-life health outcomes.
The minority stress model postulates that men who have sex with men (MSM) often encounter multiple stressors because of their sexual minority status, which may lead to psychological problems and ...maladaptive coping such as addictive behaviors (eg, internet gaming disorder IGD). It was hypothesized that hopelessness and loneliness would be associated with IGD via self-control among MSM.
This study investigated the prevalence of IGD and its associations with variables related to minority stress (loneliness and hopelessness) among MSM who were university students. Mediation involving such associations via self-control was also explored.
With informed consent, 305 MSM attending universities in Sichuan, China participated in the study. The validated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition) checklist was used to assess IGD. Multivariable logistic regression adjusted for background factors and structural equation modeling were conducted.
The prevalence of IGD was 12.8% (n=39). Logistic regression found that IGD was positively associated with hopelessness and loneliness, and negatively associated with self-control. The structural equation modeling identified three significant paths between hopelessness/loneliness and IGD: (1) hopelessness → lower self-control → higher IGD (full mediation), (2) loneliness → lower self-control → higher IGD (partial mediation: effect size of 28%), and (3) a direct effect from loneliness to IGD.
IGD was prevalent among young MSM and warrants interventions that may try to reduce the level of psychosocial problems such as loneliness and hopelessness and improve self-control. According to the socioecological model, the promotion of social acceptance and reduction in stigma toward MSM are important in reducing loneliness and hopefulness among MSM. Self-control links up the relationships between psychosocial problems and IGD and should be given special attention. Longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm the findings and test new mediations between loneliness/hopelessness and MSM with IGD.
