In this paper, the photovoltaic characteristics of bulk heterojunction solar cells employing an eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) alloy as a top metal contact which was coated by a simple and ...inexpensive brush-painting was investigated. The overall solar cell fabrication procedure was vacuum-free. As references, regular organic bulk heterojunction solar cells employing thermally evaporated Aluminum as a top metal contact were also fabricated. Inserting the ZnO layer between the active layer and the cathode electrodes (Al and EGaIn) improved the photovoltaic performance of the herein investigated devices. The power conversion efficiencies with and without EGaIn top electrodes were rather comparable. Hence, we have shown that the EGaIn, which is liquid at room temperature, can be used as a cathode. It allows an easy and rapid device fabrication that can be implemented through a vacuum free process.
The present study aimed to investigate clinical, demographic and follow-up features of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in Turkey. Among 738 inpatients consecutively admitted to a university ...psychiatric clinic, we attempted to trace 75 patients diagnosed with BPD according to DSM-III-R criteria 2- to 4-years after their index discharge. Of 61 patients who could be traced, 2 had committed suicide and 45 were included in a follow-up study. A semi-structured interview confirmed the previous diagnosis in all but two patients. The mean Global Assessment Scale score of the follow-up sample showed a 13.4% increase during the follow-up interval. Affective disorders were concomitantly diagnosed in 76.7% of the BPD patients, and the lifetime prevalence rate for this diagnostic category was estimated at 100%. Substances abuse disorder emerged as the second common Axis I diagnosis. The data obtained in the present study were in agreement with findings of previous studies on BPD conducted mostly in Western countries.
Piroxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is characterized by low solubility and high permeability. The purpose of the study was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo performance of ...the semi-solid dispersion prepared with Gelucire 44/14 and Labrasol into hard gelatin capsules (GL) for enhancing the dissolution rate of the drug. The results were evaluated by comparing with pure piroxicam filled into hard gelatin capsules (PP) and a commercially available tablet dosage form containing a piroxicam:β-cyclodextrin complex (CD). The in vitro dissolution testing of the dosage forms was performed in different media (simulated gastric fluid, pH 1.2; phosphate buffers, pH 4.5 and 6.8; and water). Amongst the dosage forms, GL provided at least 85% piroxicam dissolution within 30 min in each of the media, behaving like a fast-dissolving immediate release drug product. Oral bioavailability of 20 mg piroxicam in GL, CD, and PP was compared after administration of a single dose to eight healthy volunteers. Three treatments were administered in crossover fashion, separated by a washout period of 2 weeks. Piroxicam was monitored in plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography. The apparent rate of absorption of piroxicam from GL (
C
max=2.64 μg/ml,
t
max=82.5 min) was significantly higher than that of the PP (
C
max=0.999 μg/ml,
t
max=144 min) (
P<0.05) and similar to that of CD (
C
max=2.44 μg/ml,
t
max=120 min) (
P>0.05). The relative bioavailability values as the ratios of mean total AUC for GL relative to PP and CD, were 221 and 98.6%. Piroxicam is characterized by a slow and gradual absorption via the oral route and this causes a delayed onset of therapeutic effect. Thus, plain piroxicam preparations are not indicated for analgesia. The results of the in vivo study revealed that the GL dosage form would be advantageous with regards to rapid onset of action, especially in various painful conditions where an acute analgesic effect is desired.
To evaluate orbital blood flow velocities in patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) or primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
Blood flow velocities in the ophthalmic, central retinal, and ...posterior ciliary arteries were evaluated by color Doppler imaging in 26 patients with PXG, 28 patients with POAG and 30 age-matched normal control subjects. The results were compared.
Compared to the control subjects, patients with PXG showed statistically significant decreases in the mean peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities and increased mean resistive indices in all vessels except for the ophthalmic artery mean peak systolic velocity (p < 0.05). Patients with POAG, when compared to the control subjects, showed statistically significant decreases in the mean end-diastolic velocities and increased mean resistive indices in all vessels measured (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the mean blood flow parameters between POAG and PXG.
Blood flow velocities of the retrobulbar vessels are decreased in patients with PXG. Reduced blood flow velocities may be secondary as well as contributory to exfoliative glaucomatous damage. Although there was no significant difference in the mean blood flow parameters between POAG and PXG, alterations of retrobulbar vessels might be associated with different pathogenic mechanisms of PXG.
To determine the incidence and severity of hearing loss in different frequencies in patients with pseudoexfoliation. Furthermore, possible links between homocysteine and pseudoexfoliation were ...evaluated.
Seventy-five consecutive patients with pseudoexfoliation and 75 sex- and age-matched subjects without pseudoexfoliation as control group were included in this prospective case-control study. Pure-tone audiometry was obtained in all subjects in both groups. Blood samples were obtained from 70 patients with pseudoexfoliation after overnight fasting for levels of homocysteine and analyzed by routine laboratory measurements.
Fifty-two (69%) patients with pseudoexfoliation and 39 (52%) controls had sensorineural hearing loss in speech frequencies. The difference between pseudoexfoliation and control group with regard to the frequency of sensorineural hearing loss in speech frequencies was statistically significant (p=0.03). No relationship was found between the degree of glaucomatous damage and hearing threshold variables in the patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma. Plasma homocysteine levels showed no significant difference when patients with pseudoexfoliation and hearing loss were compared with patients with pseudoexfoliation and normal hearing threshold (p=0.5). Hyperhomocysteinemia was found in 58% (29/50) of pseudoexfoliation patients with hearing loss, and 55 % (11/20) of pseudoexfoliation patients with normal hearing threshold (p=0.8). No statistically significant correlation was found between plasma homocysteine and hearing loss in patients with pseudoexfoliation.
These findings suggest an association between sensorineural hearing loss and pseudoexfoliation in patients with pseudoexfoliation and glaucoma. The severity of hearing loss was not correlated with the degree of glaucomatous damage. There is no association between increased homocysteine levels and hearing loss in patients with pseudoexfoliation.
To compare the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), the macular volume, and the macular thickness of the amblyopic eye with those of the non-amblyopic eye in patients with unilateral ...strabismic amblyopia using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
OCT was performed for 14 patients with unilateral strabismic amblyopia who had no neurologic disease. Nine male and 5 female patients, whose ages ranged from 5 to 18 years, were enrolled in the study. The RNFL thickness average analysis program was used to evaluate mean superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal thickness. The data for all clock quadrants (12 values averaged) were identified as the overall RNFL. The retinal thickness and volume analysis program was used to evaluate macular scans. Data were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test.
The mean age (+/- standard deviation) was 10.43 years (+/- 4.09 years). There were 6 right eyes and 8 left eyes with amblyopia; this group had a mean visual acuity (+/- standard error) of 0.3 (+/- 5.70). OCT parameters including the RNFL thickness in all quadrants, overall RNFL thickness, macular thickness, and macular volume showed no significant differences between the two groups (P > .05).
Assessment of RNFL thickness, macular thickness, and macular volume with OCT revealed no difference between the two eyes of patients with unilateral strabismic amblyopia.
Major depression (MD) has a complex multifactorial etiology with genetic and environmental factors contributing to the disorder. As with all antidepressant treatments, there is variability in drug ...response due to heredity, generally focusing on genetic polymorphism of the drug-metabolizing transporter genes. The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene is a particularly important candidate for genetic involvement in MD disorders owing to its key role in the regulation of serotonergic transmission and is therefore considered to be an interesting candidate in the mechanism of antidepressant drugs. In this study, we have focused on the associations between genetic polymorphisms in two regions of the 5-HTT gene (5-HTTLPR and VNTR) related to sertraline responses. Our sample consisted of 64 unrelated Turkish subjects who strictly met DSM-IV and CGI scores. There was no significant difference between the frequency of the SS, LS, LL, 9/10, 10/10, 9/12, 10/12, and 12/12 genotypes and responses to sertraline. However, the number of patients can be increased and different drugs can be studied in order to find a specific pharmacogenetic relation.
To evaluate plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) and nitric oxide (NO) marker levels in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS), pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG), primary open-angle glaucoma ...(POAG), and normal controls.
This cross-sectional, prospective study involved 19 patients with POAG, 18 with PXS, 22 with PXG, and 20 control subjects. Fasting tHcy levels of all study participants were determined using a fluorescence polarization immunoassay method. Quantitation of total nitrate was based on the Griess reaction, in which a chromophore with a strong absorbance at 545 nm is formed by reaction of nitrite with a mixture of naphthylethylenediamine and sulphanilamide.
The mean plasma homocysteine level was statistically significantly elevated in the PXS (p=0.033) and the PXG (p=0.023) groups but not in the POAG group (p=0.996) when compared with the control group. Multiple logistic regression analyses comparing the various patient groups with the single control group indicated that elevation in plasma homocysteine concentration was a significant risk factor for PXS (odds ratio per 1 micromol/l increase in homocysteine concentration=2.05, 95% CI=1.19-3.52) and PXG (odds ratio per 1 micromol/l increase in homocysteine concentration=1.36, 95% CI=1.00-1.85) but was not a significant risk factor for POAG (odds ratio per 1 micromol/l increase in homocysteine concentration=0.99, 95% CI=0.78-1.26). NO markers levels were found to be slightly higher in PXS and PXG patients than control and POAG patients but the differences were not statistically significant (p=0.151). Multiple logistic regression analyses comparing the various patient groups with the single control group indicated that elevation in NO marker concentration was not a significant risk factor for PXS (odds ratio per 1 micromol/l increase in NO concentration=1.00, 95% CI=0.99-1.01), PXG (odds ratio per 1 micromol/l increase in NO concentration=1.00, 95% CI=0.99-1.00) and POAG (odds ratio per 1 micromol/l increase in NO concentration=0.99, 95% CI=0.99-1.00). No statistically significant correlations were observed between plasma tHcy and NO markers in study groups (p>0.05).
Elevated levels of homocysteine in pseudoexfoliation patients with and without glaucoma may partly explain the increased risk of vascular disease among patients with pseudoexfoliation. No significant difference was found in plasma NO markers among the POAG, PXS, PXG, and the control subjects.
To evaluate the effects of menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on the quality and amount of tear, intraocular pressure (IOP) and retrobulbar blood flow velocities.
Twenty women aged ...between 40 and 50 years, free of ocular and systemic diseases and planning to receive HRT were recruited as the study group. Twenty-four healthy, age-matched but still menstruating women were enrolled as controls. On the first day of study basal and reflex Schirmer test, tear break-up time and IOP measurements (at 08.00, 12.00 and 16.00 h) were performed for all groups. On the second day of the study, the peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and resistivity index (RI) of the ophthalmic (OA), central retinal (CRA), nasal (NSPCA) and temporal short posterior ciliary (TSPCA) arteries were determined by color Doppler imaging. The menopausal group received HRT for 2 months, when all measurements were repeated for the 15 women who had received HRT on a daily basis.
The quality and amount of tear decreased (p < 0.01), IOP (p < 0.01) and RI of the CRA, TPCA and NPCA (p < 0.05) increased in postmenopausal women compared with the control group. After 2 months of HRT, the quality and amount of tear had increased (p < 0.001) and the IOP had decreased (p < 0.001). The PSV of the CRA and TSPCA had decreased (p < 0.05), as had the RI in the CRA (p < 0.001), NSPCA and TSPCA (p < 0.05).
We conclude that age-induced changes on quality and amount of tear, IOP and retrobulbar blood flow are intensified by the menopause and that it may be possible to decrease the menopausal effects on these parameters by HRT.
