Merging neutron stars offer an excellent laboratory for simultaneously studying strong-field gravity and matter in extreme environments. We establish the physical association of an electromagnetic ...counterpart (EM170817) with gravitational waves (GW170817) detected from merging neutron stars. By synthesizing a panchromatic data set, we demonstrate that merging neutron stars are a long-sought production site forging heavy elements by r-process nucleosynthesis. The weak gamma rays seen in EM170817 are dissimilar to classical short gamma-ray bursts with ultrarelativistic jets. Instead, we suggest that breakout of a wide-angle, mildly relativistic cocoon engulfing the jet explains the low-luminosity gamma rays, the high-luminosity ultraviolet-optical-infrared, and the delayed radio and x-ray emission. We posit that all neutron star mergers may lead to a wide-angle cocoon breakout, sometimes accompanied by a successful jet and sometimes by a choked jet.
The strong force which binds hadrons is described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Determining the character and manifestations of QCD is one of the most important and challenging ...outstanding issues necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the structure of hadrons. Within the context of the QCD parton picture, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) have been remarkably successful in describing a wide variety of processes. However, these PDFs have generally been confined to the description of collinear partons within the hadron. New experiments and facilities provide the opportunity to additionally explore the transverse structure of hadrons which is described by generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs). In our previous report Lin et al. (2018), we compared and contrasted the two main approaches used to determine the collinear PDFs: the first based on perturbative QCD factorization theorems, and the second based on lattice-QCD calculations. In the present report, we provide an update of recent progress on the collinear PDFs, and also expand the scope to encompass the generalized PDFs (GPDs and TMD PDFs). We review the current state of the various calculations, and consider what new data might be available in the near future. We also examine how a shared effort can foster dialog between the PDF and lattice-QCD communities, and yield improvements for these generalized PDFs.
A new and potentially more pathogenic group of human rhinovirus (HRV), group C (HRVC), has recently been discovered. We hypothesised that HRVC would be present in children with acute asthma and cause ...more severe attacks than other viruses or HRV groups. Children with acute asthma (n = 128; age 2-16 yrs) were recruited on presentation to an emergency department. Asthma exacerbation severity was assessed, and respiratory viruses and HRV strains were identified in a nasal aspirate. The majority of the children studied had moderate-to-severe asthma (85.2%) and 98.9% were admitted to hospital. HRV was detected in 87.5% and other respiratory viruses in 14.8% of children, most of whom also had HRV. HRVC was present in the majority of children with acute asthma (59.4%) and associated with more severe asthma. Children with HRVC (n = 76) had higher asthma severity scores than children whose HRV infection was HRVA or HRVB only (n = 34; p = 0.018), and all other children (n = 50; p = 0.016). Of the 19 children with a non-HRV virus, 13 had HRV co-infections, seven of these being HRVC. HRVC accounts for the majority of asthma attacks in children presenting to hospital and causes more severe attacks than previously known HRV groups and other viruses.
This study investigated the extent of heavy metal accumulation in leaf vegetables and associated potential health risks in agricultural areas of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China. Total ...concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) were determined in 92 pairs of soil and leaf vegetable (flowering Chinese cabbage, lettuce, pakchoi, Chinese cabbage, loose-leaf lettuce, and Chinese leaf mustard) samples collected from seven agricultural areas (cities). The bioconcentration factors (BCF) of heavy metals from soil to vegetables were estimated, and the potential health risks of heavy metal exposure to the PRD residents through consumption of local leaf vegetables were assessed. Results showed that among the six leaf vegetables, pakchoi had the lowest capacity for heavy metal enrichment, whereas among the five heavy metals, Cd had the highest capacity for transferring from soil into vegetables, with BCF values 30-fold those of Hg and 50-fold those of Cr, Pb and As. Sewage irrigation and fertilization were likely the main sources of heavy metals accumulated in leaf vegetables grown in agricultural areas of the PRD region. Different from previous findings, soil pH had no clear effect on metal accumulation in leaf vegetables. Despite a certain degree of metal enrichment from soil to leaf vegetables, the PRD residents were not exposed to significant health risks associated with consumption of local leaf vegetables. Nevertheless, more attention should be paid to children due to their sensitivity to metal pollutants.

Aims To investigate the trend in the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus during 1999–2008 in women living in urban Tianjin, China.
Methods A universal ...screening for gestational diabetes mellitus has become an integral part of the antenatal care in Tianjin, China from 1998. A total of 105 473 pregnant women living in the six urban districts of Tianjin, China, participated in the gestational diabetes mellitus screening programme between December 1998 and December 2008. The screening test consisted of a 50‐g 1‐h glucose test. Women who had a glucose reading ≥ 7.8 mmol/l at the initial screening were invited to undergo the standard 2‐h oral glucose tolerance test with a 75‐g glucose load. Gestational diabetes mellitus was confirmed using the World Health Organization’s diagnostic criteria.
Results The adjusted prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus increased by 2.8 times during 1999–2008, from 2.4 to 6.8% (P < 0.0001 for linear trend). In 2008, the age‐specific prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus was the highest among women aged 30–34 years (11.3%) and lowest among women aged 25 and under (1.2%). In women aged 35 years and more, the prevalence was 5.3%.
Conclusions The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus has markedly been increasing in a universally screened urban Chinese female population and has become an important public health problem in China.

We study the factorization relations between quasi gluon GPDs and twist-2 GPDs. The perturbative coefficient functions are obtained at one-loop level. They are free from any collinear- or ...I.R. divergences. Unlike the case of the factorization of quasi quark GPDs at one-loop, we have to add ghost contributions for the factorization of quasi gluon GPDs in order to obtain gauge-invariant results. In general, operators will be mixed beyond tree-level. Our work shows that the mixing pattern of the nonlocal operators in quasi gluon GPDs is the same as those of local operators, i.e., the nonlocal operators considered are mixed with gauge-invariant operators, BRST-variation operators and operators involving EOM operator. The factorization relations are obtained for all quasi gluon GPDs. Taking the forward limit, we also obtain the relations between quasi gluon PDFs and twist-2 PDFs.
We present an exquisite 30 minute cadence Kepler (K2) light curve of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt), starting weeks before explosion, covering the moment of explosion and the ...subsequent rise, and continuing past peak brightness. These data are supplemented by multi-color Panoramic Survey Telescope (Pan-STARRS1) and Rapid Response System 1 and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 4 m Dark Energy Camera (CTIO 4-m DECam) observations obtained within hours of explosion. The K2 light curve has an unusual two-component shape, where the flux rises with a steep linear gradient for the first few days, followed by a quadratic rise as seen for typical supernovae (SNe) Ia. This "flux excess" relative to canonical SN Ia behavior is confirmed in our i-band light curve, and furthermore, SN 2018oh is especially blue during the early epochs. The flux excess peaks 2.14 0.04 days after explosion, has a FWHM of 3.12 0.04 days, a blackbody temperature of K, a peak luminosity of , and a total integrated energy of . We compare SN 2018oh to several models that may provide additional heating at early times, including collision with a companion and a shallow concentration of radioactive nickel. While all of these models generally reproduce the early K2 light curve shape, we slightly favor a companion interaction, at a distance of ∼ based on our early color measurements, although the exact distance depends on the uncertain viewing angle. Additional confirmation of a companion interaction in future modeling and observations of SN 2018oh would provide strong support for a single-degenerate progenitor system.
Supercritical CO2 (ScCO2) fracturing is a preferred alternative to water-based fracturing for stimulation of the shale gas reservoirs, and also promotes CO2 geological sequestration. The injected ...ScCO2 will interact with shale minerals and then induce changes in rock matrix micromechanics. In this study, a series of nanoindentation tests was conducted on the shale sample to investigate the effects of ScCO2-water treatment on shale matrix micromechanics. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze the changing mechanisms of micromechanical properties. The dispersion of grid nanoindentation data of different minerals indicates the strong heterogeneity of shale’ micromechanical properties. After ScCO2-water treatment, different shale minerals experienced different reductions of Er and H because of the dissolution induced the alterations in crystal structures, and their contents also altered in varying degrees. The values of hf/hm and Wp/Wt can be combined with the hysteresis loops enclosed by the P-h curves to determine the dominant work and irreversible deformation that produced in the process of indentation. According to the observation of indentation morphology, unlike other minerals, considerable micro-fractures were generated in clay minerals, which is correlated to the significant plastic deformation and the layered crystal structure.
•Nanoindentation method was applied for evaluating micromechanical heterogeneity of shale matrix.•After treated with ScCO2-water, the micromechanical properties of different shale minerals decreased except for quartz.•Considerable micro-fractures were generated in clay minerals because of weak mechanical strength and layered structures.
Abstract Objectives Many studies have shown that insomnia is a common problem among university students, but there are wide variations in the prevalence of insomnia. In this systematic review, we ...aimed to explore the prevalence of insomnia among university students using scientific and conclusive methods. Study design A systematic review is designed to analyze the studies reporting on prevalence of insomnia among university students. Methods Systemic searches were conducted in PubMed, BioMed Central, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, Ovid LWW and Medline databases between January 2000 and July 2014, The Meta analyst software was used to calculate the prevalence rate of each study, the pooled means of prevalence rates and 95% CIs across studies were then calculated and presented. Results Seven articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. The overall sample size in the current review was 16,478, with a minimum of 219 and a maximum of 10,322. The prevalence rates of the seven studies ranged between 9.4% (95%CI 8.8–10.0%) and 38.2% (95% CI 35.4–41.1%). Overall, the total students studied with a weighted mean prevalence of 18.5% (95% CI 11.2–28.8%), considerably higher than rates of 7.4% (95% CI 5.8–9.0%) reported in general population. Conclusions This review emphasized that insomnia prevalence in university students is considerably higher than that in general population, suggested that more attention should be paid to insomnia in university students.
