Despite wide applications of bimetallic electrocatalysis in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to their superior performance, the origin of the improved performance remains elusive. The underlying ...mechanism was explored by designing and synthesizing a series of stable metal–organic frameworks (MOFs: NNU‐21–24) based on trinuclear metal carboxylate clusters and tridentate carboxylate ligands. Among the examined stable MOFs, NNU‐23 exhibits the best OER performance; particularly, compared with monometallic MOFs, all the bimetallic MOFs display improved OER activity. DFT calculations and experimental results demonstrate that introduction of the second metal atom can improve the activity of the original atom. The proposed model of bimetallic electrocatalysts affecting their OER performance can facilitate design of efficient bimetallic catalysts for energy storage and conversion, and investigation of the related catalytic mechanisms.
An iron atom in an Fe3 cluster is replaced by a second metal to form Fe2M clusters, which can serve as nodes to bridge with organic ligands and construct stable bimetallic MOFs. The introduction of the second metal atom can improve the activity of the original atom and thus improve the oxygen evolution reaction performance of electrocatalysts.
Malaria parasites invade red blood cells (RBCs), consume copious amounts of hemoglobin, and severely disrupt iron regulation in humans. Anemia often accompanies malaria disease; however, iron ...supplementation therapy inexplicably exacerbates malarial infections. Here we found that the iron exporter ferroportin (FPN) was highly abundant in RBCs, and iron supplementation suppressed its activity. Conditional deletion of the
gene in erythroid cells resulted in accumulation of excess intracellular iron, cellular damage, hemolysis, and increased fatality in malaria-infected mice. In humans, a prevalent
mutation, Q248H (glutamine to histidine at position 248), prevented hepcidin-induced degradation of FPN and protected against severe malaria disease.
Q248H appears to have been positively selected in African populations in response to the impact of malaria disease. Thus, FPN protects RBCs against oxidative stress and malaria infection.
Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reaction can harvest the solar energy to convert the abundant but inert N2 into NH3. Here, utilizing metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes as the ideal assembly of ...nanoreactors to disperse and confine gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), we realize the direct plasmonic photocatalytic nitrogen fixation under ambient conditions. Upon visible irradiation, the hot electrons generated on the AuNPs can be directly injected into the N2 molecules adsorbed on Au surfaces. Such N2 molecules can be additionally activated by the strong but evanescently localized surface plasmon resonance field, resulting in a supralinear intensity dependence of the ammonia evolution rate with much higher apparent quantum efficiency and lower apparent activation energy under stronger irradiation. Moreover, the gas-permeable Au@MOF membranes, consisting of numerous interconnected nanoreactors, can ensure the dispersity and stability of AuNPs, further facilitate the mass transfer of N2 molecules and (hydrated) protons, and boost the plasmonic photocatalytic reactions at the designed gas–membrane–solution interface. As a result, an ammonia evolution rate of 18.9 mmol gAu –1 h–1 was achieved under visible light (>400 nm, 100 mW cm–2) with an apparent quantum efficiency of 1.54% at 520 nm.
The existence of clouds is one of the main factors that contributes to missing information in optical remote sensing images, restricting their further applications for Earth observation, so how to ...reconstruct the missing information caused by clouds is of great concern. Inspired by the image-to-image translation work based on convolutional neural network model and the heterogeneous information fusion thought, we propose a novel cloud removal method in this paper. The approach can be roughly divided into two steps: in the first step, a specially designed convolutional neural network (CNN) translates the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images into simulated optical images in an object-to-object manner; in the second step, the simulated optical image, together with the SAR image and the optical image corrupted by clouds, is fused to reconstruct the corrupted area by a generative adversarial network (GAN) with a particular loss function. Between the first step and the second step, the contrast and luminance of the simulated optical image are randomly altered to make the model more robust. Two simulation experiments and one real-data experiment are conducted to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method on Sentinel 1/2, GF 2/3 and airborne SAR/optical data. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms that also employ SAR images as auxiliary data.
Currently, natural products are one of the priceless options for finding novel chemical pharmaceutical entities. Ellipticine is a naturally occurring alkaloid isolated from the leaves of Ochrosia ...elliptica Labill. Ellipticine and its derivatives are characterized by multiple biological activities. The purpose of this review was to provide a critical and systematic assessment of ellipticine and its derivatives as bioactive molecules over the last 60 years. Publications focused mainly on the total synthesis of alkaloids of this type without any evaluation of bioactivity have been excluded. We have reviewed papers dealing with the synthesis, bioactivity evaluation and mechanism of action of ellipticine and its derivatives. It was found that ellipticine and its derivatives showed cytotoxicity, antimicrobial ability, and anti‐inflammatory activity, among which cytotoxicity toward cancer cell lines was the most investigated aspect. The inhibition of DNA topoisomerase II was the most relevant mechanism for cytotoxicity. The PI3K/AKT pathway, p53 pathway, and MAPK pathway were also closely related to the antiproliferative ability of these compounds. In addition, the structure‐activity relationship was deduced, and future prospects were outlined. We are confident that these findings will lay a scientific foundation for ellipticine‐based drug development, especially for anticancer agents.
A new hybrid optimization algorithm, a hybridization of cuckoo search and particle swarm optimization (CSPSO), is proposed in this paper for the optimization of continuous functions and engineering ...design problems. This algorithm can be regarded as some modifications of the recently developed cuckoo search (CS). These modifications involve the construction of initial population, the dynamic adjustment of the parameter of the cuckoo search, and the incorporation of the particle swarm optimization (PSO). To cover search space with balance dispersion and neat comparability, the initial positions of cuckoo nests are constructed by using the principle of orthogonal Lation squares. To reduce the influence of fixed step size of the CS, the step size is dynamically adjusted according to the evolutionary generations. To increase the diversity of the solutions, PSO is incorporated into CS using a hybrid strategy. The proposed algorithm is tested on 20 standard benchmarking functions and 2 engineering optimization problems. The performance of the CSPSO is compared with that of several meta-heuristic algorithms based on the best solution, worst solution, average solution, standard deviation, and convergence rate. Results show that in most cases, the proposed hybrid optimization algorithm performs better than, or as well as CS, PSO, and some other exiting meta-heuristic algorithms. That means that the proposed hybrid optimization algorithm is competitive to other optimization algorithms.
Antibiotic resistance has become an increasingly serious problem in the past decades. As an alternative choice, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted lots of attention. To identify new AMPs, ...machine learning methods have been commonly used. More recently, some deep learning methods have also been applied to this problem.
In this paper, we designed a deep learning model to identify AMP sequences. We employed the embedding layer and the multi-scale convolutional network in our model. The multi-scale convolutional network, which contains multiple convolutional layers of varying filter lengths, could utilize all latent features captured by the multiple convolutional layers. To further improve the performance, we also incorporated additional information into the designed model and proposed a fusion model. Results showed that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art models on two AMP datasets and the Antimicrobial Peptide Database (APD)3 benchmark dataset. The fusion model also outperforms the state-of-the-art model on an anti-inflammatory peptides (AIPs) dataset at the accuracy.
Multi-scale convolutional network is a novel addition to existing deep neural network (DNN) models. The proposed DNN model and the modified fusion model outperform the state-of-the-art models for new AMP discovery. The source code and data are available at https://github.com/zhanglabNKU/APIN.

Abstract
The demand for sustainable energy has motivated the development of artificial photosynthesis. Yet the catalyst and reaction interface designs for directly fixing permanent gases (e.g. CO

) into liquid fuels are still challenged by slow mass transfer and sluggish catalytic kinetics at the gas-liquid-solid boundary. Here, we report that gas-permeable metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes can modify the electronic structures and catalytic properties of metal single-atoms (SAs) to promote the diffusion, activation, and reduction of gas molecules (e.g. CO

to HCOOH with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 2.51% at 420 nm on the gas-liquid-solid reaction interface. With promoted gas diffusion at the porous gas-solid interfaces, the gas-permeable SA/MOF membranes can directly convert humid CO

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has become the major cause of chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease. There is still a need for innovative treatment strategies for preventing, arresting, ...treating, and reversing DKD, and a plethora of scientific evidence has revealed that Chinese herbal monomers can attenuate DKD in multiple ways. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is one of the active ingredients of Astragalus membranaceus and was selected as a chemical marker in the Chinese Pharmacopeia for quality control purposes. An increasing amount of studies indicate that AS-IV is a promising novel drug for the treatment of DKD. Abstract
Background
Wear particles-induced osteolysis is a major long-term complication after total joint arthroplasty. Up to now, there is no effective treatment for wear particles-induced ...osteolysis except for the revision surgery, which is a heavy psychological and economic burden to patients. A metabolite of gut microbiota, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), has been reported to be beneficial for many chronic inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of SCFAs on osteolysis.
Methods
A model of inflammatory osteolysis was established by applying CoCrMo alloy particles to mouse calvarium. After two weeks of intervention, the anti-inflammatory effects of SCFAs on wear particle-induced osteolysis were evaluated by Micro-CT analysis and immunohistochemistry staining. In vitro study, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) primed bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and Tohoku Hospital Pediatrics-1 (THP-1) macrophages were stimulated with CoCrMo particles to activate inflammasome in the presence of acetate (C2), propionate (C3), and butyrate (C4). Western blotting, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and immunofluorescence were used to detect the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome. The effects of SCFAs on osteoclasts were evaluate by qRT-PCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Additionally, histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, agonists of GPR41, GPR43, and GPR109A were applied to confirm the underlying mechanism of SCFAs on the inflammasome activation of macrophages and osteoclastogenesis.
Results
C3 and C4 but not C2 could alleviate wear particles-induced osteolysis with fewer bone erosion pits (
P
< 0.001), higher level of bone volume to tissue volume (BV/TV,
P
< 0.001), bone mineral density (BMD,
P
< 0.001), and a lower total porosity (
P
< 0.001). C3 and C4 prevented CoCrMo alloy particles-induced ASC speck formation and nucleation-induced oligomerization, suppressing the cleavage of caspase-1 (
P
< 0.05) and IL-1β (
P
< 0.05) stimulated by CoCrMo alloy particles. C3 and C4 also inhibited the generation of Gasdermin D-N-terminal fragment (GSDMD-NT) to regulate pyroptosis. Besides, C3 and C4 have a negative impact on osteoclast differentiation (
P
< 0.05) and its function (
P
< 0.05), affecting the podosome arrangement and morphologically normal podosome belts formation.
Conclusion
Our work showed that C3 and C4 are qualified candidates for the treatment of wear particle-induced osteolysis.
