Interest in novel uses of biogas has increased recently due to concerns about climate change and greater emphasis on renewable energy sources. Although biogas is frequently used in low-value ...applications such as heating and fuel in engines or even just flared, reforming is an emerging strategy for converting biogas to syngas, which could then be used to obtain high-value-added liquid fuels and chemicals. Interest also exists due to the role of dry, bi-, and tri-reforming in the capture and utilization of CO2. New research efforts have explored efficient and effective reforming catalysts, as specifically applied to biogas. In this paper, we review recent developments in dry, bi-, and tri-reforming, where the CO2 in biogas is used as an oxidant/partial oxidant. The synthesis, characterization, lifetime, deactivation, and regeneration of candidate reforming catalysts are discussed in detail. The thermodynamic limitation and techno-economics of biogas conversion are also discussed.

The massive consumption of fossil fuels and associated environmental issues are leading to an increased interest in alternative resources such as biofuels. The renewable biofuels can be upgraded from ...bio-oils that are derived from biomass pyrolysis. Catalytic cracking and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) are two of the most promising bio-oil upgrading processes for biofuel production. Heterogeneous catalysts are essential for upgrading bio-oil into hydrocarbon biofuel. Although advances have been achieved, the deactivation and regeneration of catalysts still remains a challenge. This review focuses on the current progress and challenges of heterogeneous catalyst application, deactivation, and regeneration. The technologies of catalysts deactivation, reduction, and regeneration for improving catalyst activity and stability are discussed. Some suggestions for future research including catalyst mechanism, catalyst development, process integration, and biomass modification for the production of hydrocarbon biofuels are provided.

The results demonstrate that SR (24%)-activated GGBS pastes possess acceptable setting time and compressive strength (29.6 MPa, 28 d), and its hydration products are calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel, calcium aluminum silicate hydrates (CASH) gel and Friedel's salt. CaCl
in SR plays a main role in hydration products generation and high compressive strength of SR- activated GGBS pastes.
Cracking of camelina oil over non-catalyst and ZSM-5 catalyst doped with different Zn concentrations (0, 10, 20 and 30wt.%) in a fixed-bed reactor was investigated. The fresh and used catalysts were ...characterized using XRD, FT-IR, BET and TEM. Characterizations of the produced hydrocarbon biofuel, distillation residual and non-condensable gas were carried out. The effect of non-catalyst and catalyst on the physicochemical properties and yield of products was discussed. The results showed that the introduction of Zn did not change the zeolite crystalline structure and ZnO might deposit on the external surface and/or inside the pores of the support ZSM-5. After upgrading, hydrocarbon biofuel had a lower viscosity, lower density, higher heating value (HHV) and higher water content than raw camelina oil. The optimum Zn concentration to ZSM-5 was 20wt.%, at which the highest hydrocarbon biofuel yield and comprehensively the best quality were obtained. Compared to non-catalytic cracking of camelina oil, the loading of Zn to ZSM-5 could improve some physicochemical properties of the hydrocarbon biofuel. In addition, the loading of Zn to ZSM-5 could facilitate the chemical reactions such as decarbonylation and dehydrogenation.

Catalytic cracking of camelina oil over Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst in a fixed-bed tubular reactor was investigated. An optimization study on the catalytic cracking conditions based on nine well-planned orthogonal experiments was carried out. Three main operation conditions including reaction temperature, liquid hourly space velocity and oil extraction press frequency were studied to examine their effects on the yield and quality of hydrocarbon biofuel produced. Characterization of the catalyst, hydrocarbon biofuel and non-condensable gas was conducted. There was no significant difference between the bulk structures of fresh Zn/ZSM-5 and used Zn/ZSM-5. Small ZnO particles dispersed well on the parent ZSM-5. Hydrocarbon biofuel contained 65.18% hydrocarbons and its properties including dynamic viscosity, density and higher heating value were improved after upgrading, compared to camelina oil. It was found that the oil extraction press frequency was the most important factor and liquid hourly space velocity was the least important factor for the hydrocarbon biofuel production. In addition, the optimum conditions for camelina oil upgrading were a combination of reaction temperature of 550°C, a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0h−1 and an oil extraction press frequency of 15Hz.
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been broadly applied to numerous domains with a substantial surface area, tunable pore size, and multiple unsaturated metal sites. Recently, hollow MOFs have ...greatly attracted the scientific community due to their internal cavities and gradient pore structures. Hollow MOFs have a higher tunability, faster mass-transfer rates, and more accessible active sites when compared to traditional, solid MOFs. Hollow MOFs are also considered to be candidates for some functional material carriers. For example, composite materials such as hollow MOFs and metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, and enzymes have been prepared. These composite materials integrate the characteristics of hollow MOFs with functional materials and are broadly used in many aspects. This review describes the preparation strategies of hollow MOFs and their composites as well as their applications in organic catalysis, electrochemical sensing, and adsorption separation. Finally, we hope that this review provides meaningful knowledge about hollow-MOF composites and their derivatives and offers many valuable references to develop hollow-MOF-based applied materials.
The intricate composition of wastewater impedes the recycling of agricultural and industrial effluents. This study aims to investigate the potential of sisal leaf wastewater (SLW), both water-treated ...(WTSLW) and alkali-treated (ATSLW), as a substitute for the alkali activator (NaOH solution) in the production of slag-powder- and fly-ash-based composites, with a focus on the effects of WTSLW substitution ratios and sisal leaf soaking durations. Initially, the fresh properties were assessed including electrical conductivity and fluidity. A further analysis was conducted on the influence of both WTSLW and ATSLW on drying shrinkage, density, and mechanical strength, including flexural and compressive measures. Microstructural features were characterized using SEM and CT imaging, while XRD patterns and FTIR spectra were employed to dissect the influence of WTSLW substitution on the composite’s products. The results show that incorporating 14 wt% WTSLW into the composite enhances 90-day flexural and compressive strengths by 34.8% and 13.2%, respectively, while WTSLW curtails drying shrinkage. Conversely, ATSLW increases porosity and decreases density. Organic constituents in both WTSLW and ATSLW encapsulated in the alkaline matrix fail to modify the composites’ chemical composition. These outcomes underscore the potential for sustainable construction materials through the integrated recycling of plant wastewater and solid by-products.
Soda residue (SR), an industrial solid waste, pollutes the environment due to its high alkalinity and chloride ion content. SR can be used as an alkali activator of ground granulated blast furnace ...slag (GGBFS). This study investigated the effects of four types of SR-activated GGBFS cementitious materials (pastes) with different mass ratios of SR to GGBFS (8:92, 16:84, 24:76, 34:68) on the physical properties, mechanical strength, and chloride binding capacity. The hydration mechanism of the pastes was also studied. Results showed that with the increasing addition of SR, the density of the pastes decreased, and more white aggregates of SR appeared causing the increase of water absorption and porosity of the pastes. The pastes with 16% SR addition had the maximum compressive strength (34.1 MPa, 28 d), so the optimum proportion of SR addition in the pastes was 16%. With the increases of SR addition, the amount of chloride element in the initial pastes increases. When the proportion of SR addition is 8%, the mass percentage of free chloride ion in the pastes at 28 d is 0.13%. The main hydration products of the pastes were C–S–H gels, ettringite, and Friedel’s salt, and the amount of ettringite varied with the amount of SR addition and curing time.

Three groups of experiments on SR-activated GGBFS mortars were designed in this paper to assess the role of the dominant parameters on fluidity and compressive strength of mortars. The results indicate that for fluidity and mechanical properties, the optimal scheme of SR-activated GGBFS mortars is 16:84-24:76 S/G, 0.01 NaOH/b, 0.05 CaO/b, and 0.50 w/b, with fluidity and compressive strength (28 d) of the mortars being 181-195 mm and 32.3-35.4 MPa, respectively. Between 2.5-10% CaCl
addition to CaO (5%)-SR (24%)-activated GGBFS mortar is beneficial to the improvement of the compressive strength of C2, whereas the addition of CaSO
is harmful. The main hydration products of mortars are ettringite, Friedel's slat, and CSH gels. The results provide a theoretical basis and data support for the utilization of SR.

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is widely used as a reinforcement filler for biocomposites due to its unique properties. However, the challenge of drying MFC and the incompatibility between nanocellulose and polymer matrix still limits the mechanical performance of MFC-reinforced biocomposites. In this study, we used a water-based transesterification reaction to functionalize MFC and explored the capability of oven-dried MFC as a reinforcement filler for polylactic acid (PLA). Remarkably, this oven-dried, vinyl laurate–modified MFC improved the tensile strength by 38 % and Young’s modulus by 71 % compared with neat PLA. Our results suggested improved compatibility and dispersion of the fibrils in PLA after modification. This study demonstrated that scalable water-based surface modification and subsequent straightforward oven drying could be a facile method for effectively drying cellulose nanomaterials. The method helps significantly disperse fibrils in polymers and enhances the mechanical properties of microfibrillar cellulose-reinforced biocomposites.
