The CONNIE detector prototype is operating at a distance of 30 m from the core of a 3.8 GW sub(th) nuclear reactor with the goal of establishing Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD) as a new technology for ...the detection of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. We report on the results of the engineering run with an active mass of 4 g of silicon. The CCD array is described, and the performance observed during the first year is discussed. A compact passive shield was deployed around the detector, producing an order of magnitude reduction in the background rate. The remaining background observed during the run was stable, and dominated by internal contamination in the detector packaging materials. The in-situ calibration of the detector using X-ray lines from fluorescence demonstrates good stability of the readout system. The event rates with the reactor ON and OFF are compared, and no excess is observed coming from nuclear fission at the power plant. The upper limit for the neutrino event rate is set two orders of magnitude above the expectations for the standard model. The results demonstrate the cryogenic CCD-based detector can be remotely operated at the reactor site with stable noise below 2 e super(-) RMS and stable background rates. The success of the engineering test provides a clear path for the upgraded 100 g detector to be deployed during 2016.

. Finally, the tools developed for this analysis and the result presented are substantial advancements in our capabilities to understand the nucleon structure in the weak sector, and also help the current and future neutrino oscillation experiments
to better constrain neutrino interaction models.
Charged-current neutrino interactions with low hadronic recoil (“low-ν”) have a cross-section that is approximately constant versus neutrino energy. These interactions have been used to measure the ...shape of neutrino fluxes as a function of neutrino energy at accelerator-based neutrino experiments such as CCFR, NuTeV, MINOS and MINERνA. In this paper, we demonstrate that low-ν events can be used to measure parameters of neutrino flux and detector models and that utilization of event distributions over the upstream detector face can discriminate among parameters that affect the neutrino flux model. From fitting a large sample of low-ν events obtained by exposing MINERνA to the NuMI medium-energy beam, we find that the best-fit flux parameters are within their a priori uncertainties, but the energy scale of muons reconstructed in the MINOS detector is shifted by 3.6% (or 1.8 times the a priori uncertainty on that parameter). These fit results are now used in all MINERνA cross-section measurements, and this technique can be applied by other experiments operating at MINERνA energies, such as DUNE.

The CONNIE experiment uses fully depleted, high resistivity CCDs as particle detectors in an attempt to measure for the first time the Coherent Neutrino-Nucleus Elastic Scattering of antineutrinos ...from a nuclear reactor with silicon nuclei. This talk, given at the XV Mexican Workshop on Particles and Fields (MWPF), discussed the potential of CONNIE to perform this measurement, the installation progress at the Angra dos Reis nuclear power plant, as well as the plans for future upgrades.
We present a simulation-based study using deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) to identify neutrino interaction vertices in the MINERvA passive targets region, and illustrate the application of ...domain adversarial neural networks (DANNs) in this context. DANNs are designed to be trained in one domain (simulated data) but tested in a second domain (physics data) and utilize unlabeled data from the second domain so that during training only features which are unable to discriminate between the domains are promoted. MINERvA is a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment using the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. A-dependent cross sections are an important part of the physics program, and these measurements require vertex finding in complicated events. To illustrate the impact of the DANN we used a modified set of simulation in place of physics data during the training of the DANN and then used the label of the modified simulation during the evaluation of the DANN. We find that deep learning based methods offer significant advantages over our prior track-based reconstruction for the task of vertex finding, and that DANNs are able to improve the performance of deep networks by leveraging available unlabeled data and by mitigating network performance degradation rooted in biases in the physics models used for training.
Charged-current antineutrino interactions on a hydrocarbon scintillator in the MINERvA detector are used to study activity from their final-state neutrons. To ensure that most of the neutrons are ...from the primary interaction, rather than hadronic reinteractions in the detector, the sample is limited to momentum transfers below 0.8 GeV/c. From 16 129 interactions, 15 246 neutral particle candidates are observed. The reference simulation predicts 64% of these candidates are due to neutrons from the antineutrino interaction directly but also overpredicts the number of candidates by 15% overall. This discrepancy is beyond the standard uncertainty estimates for models of neutrino interactions and neutron propagation in the detector. We explore these two aspects of the models using the measured distributions for energy deposition, time of flight, position, and speed. We also use multiplicity distributions to evaluate the presence of a two-nucleon knockout process. These results provide critical new information toward a complete description of the hadronic final state of neutrino interactions, which is vital to neutrino oscillation experiments.
ARAPUCA is a totally innovative device for liquid argon scintillation light detection. It is composed of a passive light collector and of active devices. The active devices are standard SiPMs that ...operate at liquid argon temperature, while the passive collector is a photon trap that allows the collection of light with extremely high efficiency. The total detection efficiency of the device can be tuned by modifying the ratio between the area of the active components (SiPM) and that of the optical window. Few arrays of ARAPUCAs will be installed inside the prototype of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment - protoDUNE - and their performances will be compared with those of more standard solutions based on guiding bars. The results of the most recent tests of ARAPUCAs in a liquid argon environment, which led to the actual design for the protoDUNE, will be reported together with the proposal of a photon detection system for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment based on ARAPUCAs combined with dielectric mirror foils coated by wavelength-shifter.
This paper presents a novel neutral-pion reconstruction that takes advantage of the machine learning technique of semantic segmentation using MINERvA data collected between 2013–2017, with an average ...neutrino energy of 6 GeV. Semantic segmentation improves the purity of neutral pion reconstruction from two γs from 70.7 ± 0.9% to 89.3 ± 0.7% and improves the efficiency of the reconstruction by approximately 40%. We demonstrate our method in a charged current neutral pion production analysis where a single neutral pion is reconstructed. This technique is applicable to modern tracking calorimeters, such as the new generation of liquid-argon time projection chambers, exposed to neutrino beams with 〈E ν〉 between 1–10 GeV. In such experiments it can facilitate the identification of ionization hits which are associated with electromagnetic showers, thereby enabling improved reconstruction of charged-current νe events arising from νμ → νe appearance.
The CONNIE Experiment (Coherent Neutrino Nucleus Interaction Experiment) is currently collecting reactor neutrino data to search for the undiscovered standard model process of coherent ...neutrino-nucleus scattering (CNNS). The detector is composed of a silicon target of thick, fully-depleted, low-noise CCD detectors. Results from data collected in 2015 indicate backgrounds are controlled, and allow an estimate of sensitivity to be presented for a larger scale detector. A 2016 upgrade, adding additional target mass, and reducing readout noise, has been performed, increasing the total yield of signal events by a factor of 30, and already yielding science-quality data. Low-energy nuclear calibrations have been performed, enabling calibration down to the device energy threshold. An estimate of the sensitivity expected for measuring the coherent neutrino process is presented. Future prospects with improved detector energy thresholds are estimated.
