Lung cancer accounts for more than 1.5 million deaths worldwide, and it corresponded to 26% of all deaths due to cancer in 2017. However, lung computer-aided diagnosis systems developed to identify ...lung cancer at early stages are increasing survival rates. This study explores the performance of deep transfer learning from non-medical images on lung nodule malignancy classification tasks in order to improve such systems. Initially, the 1018 chest computed tomography (CT) examinations and medical annotations from the LIDC/IDRI were processed. Then, several convolutional neural networks (VGG16, VGG19, MobileNet, Xception, InceptionV3, ResNet50, InceptionResNetV2, DenseNet169, DenseNet201, NASNetMobile and NASNetLarge) were built, trained on the ImageNet dataset, converted into feature extractors and applied on the LIDC/IDRI nodule images. Following this, each set of deep features was submitted to 10-fold cross-validations with naive Bayes, multilayer perceptron, support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors KNN and random forest classifiers. Finally, the evaluation metrics accuracy (ACC), area under the curve (AUC), true positive rate (TPR), precision (PPV) and F1-score of each cross-validation average result were computed and compared. The results showed that the deep feature extractor based on the ResNet50 and the SVM RBF classifier, achieved an AUC metric of 93.1% (the highest value not only among the evaluated combinations, but also among the related works in the literature evaluated), a TPR of 85.38%, an ACC of 88.41%, a PPV of 73.48% and an F1-score of 78.83%. Based on these results, deep transfer learning proves to be a relevant strategy to extract representative features from lung nodule CT images.
Forty crossbred (Santa Ines × Dorper) male lambs were used to investigate the effect of dietary buriti oil (BOIL) intake on meat quality, fatty acid (FA) composition and sensory attributes. A ...completely randomized design with five BOIL intake levels (0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 g/kg DM) was used. Increasing dietary BOIL intake linearly reduced the DMI, slaughter weight, cooking loss, shear force, yellowness, 16:0, c9–18:1 FA concentrations, and the delta-9-desaturase activity index computed using c9–16:1 and 16:0 as product and substrate pair, cis-MUFA and ƩMUFA/ƩSFA ratio of lamb meat (P ≤ 0.05); however, increasing dietary BOIL intake quadratically increased the energy intake, lipid content and linearly increased the total FA intake, chroma, collagen, total BI, 18:0, 20:3n–6 concentration and sensory attributes of lamb meat (P ≤ 0.05), without affecting health indexes regarding fat consumption. BOIL addition at levels above 24 g/kg DM in lamb diet reduces growth, however, improves tenderness, flavor and “goat” aroma intensity and slightly changes meat FA levels, promoting better acceptance by panelists.
•Feeding Buriti oil to lambs increased the 18:0 and decreased the 16:0 of meat.•Feeding Buriti oil to lambs decreased the yellowness, shear force and goaty aroma of meat.•Feeding Buriti oil to lambs decreased the “goaty” flavor.•Lambs fed with BOIL had better “goaty” flavor and aroma intensity in meat.
Previous results demonstrate that the hybrid synthetic pterocarpanquinone LQB-118 presents antileishmanial activity against Leishmania amazonensis in a mouse model. The aim of the present study was ...to use a hamster model to investigate whether LQB-118 presents antileishmanial activity against Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, which is the major Leishmania species related to American tegumentary leishmaniasis. The in vitro antileishmanial activity of LQB-118 on L. braziliensis was tested on the promastigote and intracellular amastigote forms. The cell death induced by LQB-118 in the L. braziliensis promastigotes was analyzed using an annexin V-FITC/PI kit, the oxidative stress was evaluated by 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA) and the ATP content by luminescence. In situ labeling of DNA fragments by terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) was used to investigate apoptosis in the intracellular amastigotes. L. braziliensis-infected hamsters were treated from the seventh day of infection with LQB-118 administered intralesionally (26 µg/kg/day, three times a week) or orally (4,3 mg/kg/day, five times a week) for eight weeks. LQB-118 was active against the L. braziliensis promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes, producing IC50 (50% inhibitory concentration) values of 3,4±0,1 and 7,5±0,8 µM, respectively. LQB-118 induced promastigote phosphatidylserine externalization accompanied by increased reactive oxygen species production and ATP depletion. Intracellular amastigote DNA fragmentation was also observed, without affecting the viability of macrophages. The treatment of L. braziliensis-infected hamsters with LQB-118, either orally or intralesionally, was effective in the control of lesion size, parasite load and increase intradermal reaction to parasite antigen. Taken together, these results show that the antileishmanial effect of LQB-118 extends to L. braziliensis in the hamster model, involves the induction of parasite apoptosis and shows promising therapeutic option by oral or local routes in leishmaniasis.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the socio-environmental characteristics, executive and nutritional functions in children aged 6 to 7 years, from public schools in Alagoas, Brazil. A ...quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive study was performed involving 64 children of the mentioned age group, from public schools located in Alagoas: Maceió, on the coast; Major Isidoro, in the hinterland and Palmeira dos Índios, in the country. Such analyzes were made through the application of neuropsychological tests and anthropometric assessment with children and food and socio-environmental surveys with their parents. As for the type of housing, 100% were made of masonry, with a bathroom present in 98.4%. All children reported with the habit of bathing in the river / lagoon, presented some pathology. There was no significant difference between cities in terms of the sociodemographic characteristics evaluated, with the same result occurring with the factors associated with the occurrence of diseases in children. The subtests of WISC-IV, were below the average in all municipalities, and the TAC and SCC were classified within the average. However, even though the ranking were divided between below average and average, it is possible to identify from the subtests of WISC-IV, that the general IQ showed a cognitive level below the average. There was also no significant difference in the anthropometric assessment (weight, height, BMI and IMCI) between the evaluated students. The average weight was 23.3 kg to 25 kg, the height between 1.23 m to 1.24 m, the BMI between 16.4 to 17; the IMCI from 2.8 to 3.0. Children were classified within the average. Regarding micronutrients (Ca, Fe, K, Mg and Na, and vitamins A, C, D, B1, B9 and B12) and calories, there was also no significant difference between the cities evaluated. The same occurred with macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids). This study showed that in general there was no difference between the students of the three municipalities. Probably, even though they are all public schools and from different cities, children have similar social conditions.

Provavelmente, mesmo sendo todas escolas públicas e de diferentes cidades, as crianças têm condições sociais semelhantes.
The Amazon Basin plays key roles in the carbon and water cycles, climate change, atmospheric chemistry, and biodiversity. It has already been changed significantly by human activities, and more ...pervasive change is expected to occur in the coming decades. It is therefore essential to establish long-term measurement sites that provide a baseline record of present-day climatic, biogeochemical, and atmospheric conditions and that will be operated over coming decades to monitor change in the Amazon region, as human perturbations increase in the future. The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) has been set up in a pristine rain forest region in the central Amazon Basin, about 150 km northeast of the city of Manaus. Two 80 m towers have been operated at the site since 2012, and a 325 m tower is nearing completion in mid-2015. An ecological survey including a biodiversity assessment has been conducted in the forest region surrounding the site. Measurements of micrometeorological and atmospheric chemical variables were initiated in 2012, and their range has continued to broaden over the last few years. The meteorological and micrometeorological measurements include temperature and wind profiles, precipitation, water and energy fluxes, turbulence components, soil temperature profiles and soil heat fluxes, radiation fluxes, and visibility. A tree has been instrumented to measure stem profiles of temperature, light intensity, and water content in cryptogamic covers. The trace gas measurements comprise continuous monitoring of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ozone at five to eight different heights, complemented by a variety of additional species measured during intensive campaigns (e.g., VOC, NO, NO2, and OH reactivity). Aerosol optical, microphysical, and chemical measurements are being made above the canopy as well as in the canopy space. They include aerosol light scattering and absorption, fluorescence, number and volume size distributions, chemical composition, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations, and hygroscopicity. In this paper, we discuss the scientific context of the ATTO observatory and present an overview of results from ecological, meteorological, and chemical pilot studies at the ATTO site.
Abstract Urinary tract infections are responsible for most human infections, these are caused by bacteria, fungi, protozoa and associated microorganisms. The goal of this study was to determine the ...rate of vaginal infection-causing agents in routine cytological exams and also to evaluate the characteristics of positive tested Pap smears. A retrospective documental with descriptive aspect research was performed in a Clinical Pathology laboratory from Maceió-AL. The results of the Pap smears exams for Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida spp and HPV were arranged in a database as well as other data such as bacterial, protozoan, fungal and viral coinfections. The sample was composed by 18.645 women who have undergone Pap smear exams from 2013 to 2017. Of these analyzed exams, 27.4% in 2013, 10.9% in 2014, 10.6% in 2015, 15.2% in 2016 and 13.67% in 2017 were within normal range, however more than half of these exams presented some infections caused by unspecific or microbiological agents. By analyzing all the reports, 4.073 (21.84%) presented inflammations caused by some species of infectious agent with the following rate order: G. vaginalis and T. vaginalis. Furthermore, it was possible to confirm high rates of coinfection by and Candida spp. The rate of genital infections in this study highlights that there is a public health matter that must be controlled, which points a greater need for monitoring, guidance and actions towards greater awareness in order to prevent these problems.
Despite the development of new therapies for leishmaniasis, among the 200 countries or territories reporting to the WHO, 87 were identified as endemic for Tegumentary Leishmaniasis and 75 as endemic ...for Visceral Leishmaniasis. The identification of antileishmanial drug candidates is essential to fill the drug discovery pipeline for leishmaniasis. In the hit molecule LQB-118 selected, the first generation of pterocarpanquinones was effective and safe against experimental visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis via oral delivery. In this paper, we report the synthesis and antileishmanial activity of the second generation of pterocarpanoquinones.
The second generation of pterocarpanquinones 2a-f was prepared through a palladium-catalyzed oxyarylation of dihydronaphtalen and chromens with iodolawsone, easily prepared by iodination of lawsone. The spectrum of antileishmanial activity was evaluated in promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes of
,
, and
. Toxicity was assessed in peritoneal macrophages and selective index calculated by CC
/IC
. Oxidative stress was measured by intracellular ROS levels and mitochondrial membrane potential in treated cells.
In this work, we answered two pertinent questions about the structure of the first-generation pterocarpanquinones: the configuration and positions of rings B (pyran) and C (furan) and the presence of oxygen in the B ring. When rings B and C are exchanged, we noted an improvement of the activity against promastigotes and amastigotes of
and promastigotes of
. As to the oxygen in ring B of the new generation, we observed that the oxygenated compound 2b is approximately twice as active against
promastigotes than its deoxy derivative 2a. Another modification that improved the activity was the addition of the methylenedioxy group. A variation in the susceptibility among species was evident in the clinically relevant form of the parasite, the intracellular amastigote.
was the species most susceptible to novel derivatives, whilst
was resistant to most of them. The pterocarpanoquinones (2b and 2c) that possess the oxygen atom in ring B showed induction of increased ROS production.
The data presented indicate that the pterocarpanoquinones are promising compounds for the development of new leishmanicidal agents.
The pathophysiological mechanisms of arterial hypertension during hemodialysis (HD) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are still poorly understood. The aim of this study is to ...investigate physiological, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine changes in patients with ESRD and its correlation with changes in blood pressure (BP) during the HD session. The present study included 21 patients with ESRD undergoing chronic HD treatment. Group A (study) consisted of patients who had BP increase and group B (control) consisted of those who had BP reduction during HD session. Echocardiograms were performed during the HD session to evaluate cardiac output (CO) and systemic vascular resistance (SVR). Before and after the HD session, blood samples were collected to measure brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), catecholamines, endothelin-1 (ET-1), nitric oxide (NO), electrolytes, hematocrit, albumin and nitrogen substances. The mean age of the studied patients was 43 ± 4.9 years, and 54.6% were males. SVR significantly increased in group A (P<0.001). There were no differences in the values of BNP, NO, adrenalin, dopamin and noradrenalin, before and after dialysis, between the two groups. The mean value of ET-1, post HD, was 25.9 pg ml(-1) in group A and 13.3 pg ml(-1) in group B (P = < 0.001). Patients with ESRD showed different hemodynamic patterns during the HD session, with significant BP increase in group A, caused by an increase in SVR possibly due to endothelial dysfunction, evidenced by an increase in serum ET-1 levels.
•Condensed tannins (CT) from Acacia mearnsii extract was added in the diet of lambs.•Acacia mearnsii extract improves moisture, shear force and luminosity (L*) color index.•CT addition increased ...C18:0, ∑PUFA, ∑odd chain, the ∑PUFA:∑SFA ratio in lamb meat.•Acacia mearnsii in lambs’ diet above 20 g/kg DM reduces growth and meat lipids content.•Acacia mearnsii extract inclusion in lamb diet at to the level of 20 g/kg is recommended.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary condensed tannins (CT) from Acacia mearnsii extract on performance, carcass traits and meat quality of lambs. Forty uncastrated Santa Ines crossbreed lambs were randomly distributed in five diets with 0, 20, 40 and 60 and 80 g CT/kg DM inclusion. The CT inclusion from Acacia mearnsii extract in the diet of lambs quadratically increased (P < 0.05) DM intake, growth rate, lipid content and pH meat, and linearly reduced carcass weight and traits, commercial cut weights, color parameters (a*, b*, C*), fatty acids C16:1, C18:1, ∑MUFA, and meat softness. However, there were trend to linear increases on moisture (P = 0.061), shear force (p = 0.089), and linear increasing (P <0.05) on the luminosity (L*) color index, fatty acids C12:0, C18:0, C18:2, C18:3, C20:4, C20:5, C22:5, ∑PUFA, ∑odd chain FA, the ∑PUFA: ∑SFA ratio. Linear Response Plateau (LRP) analysis demonstrated that the inclusion at levels 0, 20 and 40 g CT/kg DM in lamb diet presented similar (P > 0.05) and were better that inclusion of 60 and 80 g CT/kg DM. The CT inclusion did not affect (P > 0.05) protein and ash meta concentration, water holding capacity, C14:0, C18:2cis-9-trans-11, and ∑UFA, ∑SFA: ∑UFA and ∑n-6:∑n-3 ratio. The inclusion of CT from Acacia mearnsii extract in the lamb diet did not affect (P > 0.05) the flavor or overall acceptability of the lamb meat. The LRP analysis demonstrated that the inclusion level 20 g CT/kg DM in lamb diet proportioned greater softness according panelists (P <0.001) compared others treatment. Condensed tannin from Acacia mearnsii extract can be used until a level of 20 g/kg DM since improved DMI, slaughter weight and two of the most profitable commercial cuts (loin and rib). In addition, it improved PUFA composition and softness of lamb meat. We don't recommend CT addition above 40 g/kg DM, as it may compromise sensory meat characteristics.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a relevant disease in feline clinic. The tubulointerstitial damage, with collagen deposition and fibrosis, is an important result of this process. The aim of this ...study was to quantify and correlate the deposition of collagen and severity of interstitial fibrosis (IF) in the kidney from cats in different stages of CKD. Kidney fragments from 10 adult cats with CKD were analyzed and stained by Masson's trichrome (MT) and Picrosirius red (PSR) for circular polarized microscopy. Random quantitative analysis was performed on MT sections to classify the degree of IF, per field area, with and without circular polarization. Statistics correlations were performed by Spearman's (ρ; p < .05). There was a significant correlation of IF quantification with the area of interstitial collagen deposition by polarized PSR (PSRp) (r = .7939, p = .0098) and nonpolarized PSR (PSRn) (r = .7781, p = .0080). There was a positive correlation of serum creatinine (sCr) at different stages of CKD with PSRp (r = .7939, p = .0098), PSRn (r = .8667, p = .0027) and MT (r = .7818, p = .0117). Correlations between the percentage of quantified area was also positive from PSRp to PSRn (r = .9030, p = .0009) and PSRp to MT (r = .7939, p = .0098). The PSRN was also correlated with MT (r = .9273, p = .0001). The correlation with IF and sCr follows the disease evolution and the quantification of collagen by PSR is an excellent tool for analyzing the disease severity at different stages.
The quantification of interstitial collagen is an excellent tool to analyze tubulointerstitial damage in cats with CKD
Circular polarization microscopy is a good apparatus for the analysis of collagen deposition in kidneys of cats with CKD.
