The effects of elevated dietary arginine on the hematology and immune function of juvenile channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were evaluated by means of in vivo and in vitro experiments. Healthy ...juvenile channel catfish (average weight, 34.8 g) were fed casein–gelatin‐based diets containing 28% crude protein and supplemented with crystalline l‐arginine (ARG) at 0.5, 1, 2, or 4% of diet. An intact‐protein diet containing 1.3% arginine also was included to investigate the effects of amino acid form (crystalline‐free amino acids versus intact protein). Each purified diet was fed to apparent satiation to triplicate groups of fish for 6 weeks. At the end of the experimental feeding period, the fish were injected intraperitoneally with two doses (3 d apart) of 2 mg lipopolysaccharide/kg body weight. Six days after the initial injection, the fish were anesthetized and tissue samples were obtained to evaluate hematological and humoral and cellular immune parameters, including phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), blood cell counts, plasma protein, and hepatic superoxide dismutase activity. High dietary levels (4% ARG) resulted in significantly higher levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and circulating erythrocytes. Dietary ARG did not significantly affect MCV and the number of circulating leukocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and monocytes. In vitro, a moderate level (2 mM) of ARG in the culture media was found to be ideal in significantly enhancing phagocytosis. This study demonstrates that some aspects of the immune system of channel catfish are sensitive to changes in dietary ARG.
Triploid Crassostrea gigas were cultured during 13 months in Nestier-type oyster trays. The impact of environmental parameters on the physiological and immunological parameters was evaluated. ...Temperature, salinity and seston were recorded monthly. Seventeen oysters were sampled monthly for immunological and condition index (CI) analyses. Samples were obtained as a haemolymph lysate supernatant (HLS). Protein content was determined using the Bradford method. The activity of hydrolytic enzymes was determined using the API ZYM kit and the lysoplate assay. Seston showed different patterns throughout the cycle. Condition index showed a positive correlation with the protein content of HLS. Protein showed a negative correlation with temperature. Eleven hydrolytic enzymes were detected in samples and higher enzymatic activity corresponded to leucine arylamidase and esterase. Leucine arylamidase and lysozyme activity showed a positive correlation with temperature. Oyster mortality was 28% in our modules and 70% in the oyster farm. Oysters showed low values of CI and haemolymph protein content in summer-autumn when mortalities were observed in the culture system. This finding suggests that these stressed oysters may have insufficient energy to invest in their immune system. It appears that oyster mortality in the culture system resulted from a combination of animal overcrowding, high temperature and low salinity.

La administración intragástrica del antígeno induce una respuesta vigorosa, tanto local como sistémica, principalmente de inmunoglobulinas A y G contra la omp48 de A. veronii. Estas se evidenciaron por la presencia de (i) células productoras de anticuerpos contra omp48 en el tracto gastrointestinal, bazo y sangre, y (ii) elevados niveles de anticuerpos circulantes.La estimulación del sistema inmune de mucosa mediante antígenos bacterianos inmunogénicos, puede ser una importante alternativa para el control y prevención de enfermedades asociadas a Aeromonas.

Salinity stress is one of the most important problems in crop productivity. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can also confer stress tolerance in plants under saline soil conditions. In a ...previous work, it was reported that bacteria strains isolated from hypersaline sites mitigated salt stress in chili pepper (Capsicum annuum var. Caballero) plants and promoted plant growth in some cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the modulation of gene expression in C. annuum plants by bacteria strains isolated from saline environments. Two bacteria strains from high salinity ponds in Guerrero Negro, BCS, Mexico (Bacillus sp. strain 32 and Staphylococcus sp. strain 155) and Azospirillum brasilense Cd (DSM 1843) were used. Significant improvement in fresh weight yield (stem (28%), root (128.9%), and leaves (20%)) was observed in plants inoculated with Bacillus sp. strain 32. qPCR analysis showed that both strains modulated the expression of stress-responsive genes (MYB, ETR1, JAR1, WRKY, and LOX2) as well as heat shock factors and protein genes (CahsfA2, CahsfA3, CahsfB3a, CaDNaJ02, and CaDNaJ04). Finally, the expression levels of genes related to early salt stress and ISR showed differences in plants with dual treatment (bacteria-inoculated and salt-stressed) compared to plants with simple salinity stress. This work confirmed the differential modification of the transcriptional levels of genes observed in plants inoculated with bacteria under salinity stress.
