Defects induced by liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite using sonication were studied. It was shown that localized impact by cavitation shock waves can produce bulk ripplocations and various types of ...dislocations in graphite nanoplatelets. Formation of ripples is more pronounced in large aspect (length/width) ratio platelets or nanobelts. Quasi-periodical ripple systems were observed in many nanobelts after sonication. Mechanism of formation of ripples and dislocations during sonication was proposed. Surprisingly, fast high-temperature processing was found to anneal most of defects. This is consistent with our observations that defects associated with ripplocations are strongly localized and thus can be fast annealed.
A simple and scalable method was developed for the fabrication of wearable strain and bending sensors, based on high aspect ratio (length/thickness ∼103) graphite nanobelt thin films deposited by a ...modified Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto flexible polymer substrates. The sensing mechanism is based on the changes in contact resistance between individual nanobelts upon substrate deformation. Very high sensor response stability for more than 5000 strain-release cycles and a device power consumption as low as 1 nW were achieved. The device maximum stretchability is limited by the metal electrodes and the polymer substrate; the maximum strain that could be applied to the polymer used in this work was 40%. Bending tests carried out for various radii of curvature demonstrated distinct sensor responses for positive and negative curvatures. The graphite nanobelt thin flexible films were successfully tested for acoustic vibration and heartbeat sensing.
Objective
This study estimated the association between stress and periodontitis.
Materials and methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 621 individuals. Information about ...individuals was obtained through a questionnaire. Stress was evaluated using the Perceived Stress Scale. The diagnosis of periodontitis was based on a complete periodontal examination including clinical attachment level, probing depth, and bleeding on probing. Prevalence ratios (PR), crude and adjusted, and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated by Poisson regression analysis.
Results
In the final sample, 48.47% (301) of the individuals were classified as having stress, of which, 23.92% (72) had the diagnosis of periodontitis. Association measurements between stress and probing depth ≥ 4 mm (PR
adjusted
= 1.28, 95%CI 1.04 to 1.58), stress and clinical attachment level ≥ 5 mm (PR
adjusted
= 1.15, 95%CI 1.01 to 1.31), and stress and periodontitis (PR
adjusted
= 1.36, 95%CI 1.01 to 1.83) showed that the frequency of these outcomes among those exposed to stress was 15–36% higher than those without the condition of stress, after adjustment for age, sex, schooling level, current smoking habit, pulmonary disease, and body mass index.
Conclusions
The findings showed positive association between exposure to stress and the presence of periodontitis, reaffirming the need to prevent and control stress.
Clinical relevance
Although there are limitations in this study, the results showed that an association exists between stress and periodontitis, signaling the necessity of a multidisciplinary attention when considering the psychological status in the management of oral and general health conditions of the individual.

Objectives
This research evaluated the association between exposure to common mental disorder (CMD) and the presence of periodontitis.
Background
Common mental disorder is characterized by the ...presence of irritation, fatigue, insomnia, forgetfulness, decreased ability to concentrate, anxiety, and depression. It has been associated with several diseases; however, there are few studies that have associated it with periodontitis.
Methods
This cross‐sectional study was carried out with 621 individuals. Data collection involved the application of a general questionnaire and the self‐reporting questionnaire for diagnosis of CMD. The diagnosis of periodontitis involved a full mouth periodontal examination using: clinical attachment level, probing depth, and bleeding on probing. Prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals between CMD (exposure) and periodontitis (outcome) were obtained.
Results
In the final sample, 38.16% (237) of the individuals were classified with CMD. Among these, 28.27% (67) had periodontitis. Association measurements showed that the occurrence of periodontitis among those exposed to CMD is approximately 50% higher than in those without this mental condition, with statistical significance, after adjustment for age, sex, family income, current smoking habit, alcohol beverage consumption, and cardiovascular disease (PRadjusted = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.13 to 2.10).
Conclusions
The findings showed a positive association between exposure to CMD and periodontitis, revealing the importance of broadening public actions targeting mental health, which seems to be related to oral health, mainly due to the high frequency of the diseases in the studied sample.
Objective
This study investigated the association between periodontitis severity (exposure) and metabolic syndrome (MetS - outcome), using two criteria for diagnosis of the outcome, since this ...relationship remains unexplored.
Materials and methods
A case-control study was conducted with 870 individuals: 408 with first MetS diagnosis (cases) and 462 without MetS (controls). Participants’ general information was obtained using a questionnaire and laboratory data was collected from medical records. Periodontitis severity criteria followed the Center for Disease Control and Prevention: none, mild, moderate, and severe. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were determined by logistic regression analysis.
Results
Findings showed a positive association between moderate and severe periodontitis and MetS: OR

= 1.64 (95% CI: 1.01 to 2.68) and OR
adjusted
= 1.94 (95% CI: 1.19 to 3.16), respectively, after adjustment for age, sex, schooling level, smoking habit, and cardiovascular disease. The adjusted measurements showed that among individuals with moderate or severe periodontitis, the probability of having MetS was around two times greater than among those without periodontitis, and that the chance was greater among participants with severe periodontitis than those with moderate periodontitis.
Conclusion
An association between the severity of periodontal status and MetS was found, suggesting a possible relationship between the two diseases.
Clinical relevance
MetS influences the etiology of cardiovascular diseases, one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The findings suggest that the greater the severity of periodontitis, the greater is the association magnitude with MetS. The health professional needs to recognize that the importance of periodontal disease may play in MetS.
In 2010, vaccinia virus caused an outbreak of bovine vaccinia that affected dairy cattle and rural workers in Pará State, Brazil. Genetic analyses identified the virus as distinct from BeAn58058 ...vaccinia virus (identified in 1960s) and from smallpox vaccine virus strains. These findings suggest spread of autochthonous group 1 vaccinia virus in this region.

The genus Xanthomonas is a diverse and economically important group of bacterial phytopathogens, belonging to the γ-subdivision of the Proteobacteria. Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac) causes ...citrus canker, which affects most commercial citrus cultivars, resulting in significant losses worldwide. Symptoms include canker lesions, leading to abscission of fruit and leaves and general tree decline. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) causes black rot, which affects crucifers such as Brassica and Arabidopsis. Symptoms include marginal leaf chlorosis and darkening of vascular tissue, accompanied by extensive wilting and necrosis. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris is grown commercially to produce the exopolysaccharide xanthan gum, which is used as a viscosifying and stabilizing agent in many industries. Here we report and compare the complete genome sequences of Xac and Xcc. Their distinct disease phenotypes and host ranges belie a high degree of similarity at the genomic level. More than 80% of genes are shared, and gene order is conserved along most of their respective chromosomes. We identified several groups of strain-specific genes, and on the basis of these groups we propose mechanisms that may explain the differing host specificities and pathogenic processes.

Computer-aided detection (CADe) systems could assist endoscopists in detecting early neoplasia in Barrett's oesophagus, which could be difficult to detect in endoscopic images. The aim of this study ...was to develop, test, and benchmark a CADe system for early neoplasia in Barrett's oesophagus.
The CADe system was first pretrained with ImageNet followed by domain-specific pretraining with GastroNet. We trained the CADe system on a dataset of 14 046 images (2506 patients) of confirmed Barrett's oesophagus neoplasia and non-dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus from 15 centres. Neoplasia was delineated by 14 Barrett's oesophagus experts for all datasets. We tested the performance of the CADe system on two independent test sets. The all-comers test set comprised 327 (73 patients) non-dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus images, 82 (46 patients) neoplastic images, 180 (66 of the same patients) non-dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus videos, and 71 (45 of the same patients) neoplastic videos. The benchmarking test set comprised 100 (50 patients) neoplastic images, 300 (125 patients) non-dysplastic images, 47 (47 of the same patients) neoplastic videos, and 141 (82 of the same patients) non-dysplastic videos, and was enriched with subtle neoplasia cases. The benchmarking test set was evaluated by 112 endoscopists from six countries (first without CADe and, after 6 weeks, with CADe) and by 28 external international Barrett's oesophagus experts. The primary outcome was the sensitivity of Barrett's neoplasia detection by general endoscopists without CADe assistance versus with CADe assistance on the benchmarking test set. We compared sensitivity using a mixed-effects logistic regression model with conditional odds ratios (ORs; likelihood profile 95% CIs).
Sensitivity for neoplasia detection among endoscopists increased from 74% to 88% with CADe assistance (OR 2·04; 95% CI 1·73-2·42; p<0·0001 for images and from 67% to 79% 2·35; 1·90-2·94; p<0·0001 for video) without compromising specificity (from 89% to 90% 1·07; 0·96-1·19; p=0·20 for images and from 96% to 94% 0·94; 0·79-1·11; for video; p=0·46). In the all-comers test set, CADe detected neoplastic lesions in 95% (88-98) of images and 97% (90-99) of videos. In the benchmarking test set, the CADe system was superior to endoscopists in detecting neoplasia (90% vs 74% OR 3·75; 95% CI 1·93-8·05; p=0·0002 for images and 91% vs 67% 11·68; 3·85-47·53; p<0·0001 for video) and non-inferior to Barrett's oesophagus experts (90% vs 87% OR 1·74; 95% CI 0·83-3·65 for images and 91% vs 86% 2·94; 0·99-11·40 for video).
CADe outperformed endoscopists in detecting Barrett's oesophagus neoplasia and, when used as an assistive tool, it improved their detection rate. CADe detected virtually all neoplasia in a test set of consecutive cases.

White light emission with CIE-1931 coordinates close to the standard equal-energy white light illuminant, and color temperature in the 4000–6500K range was produced in Tm3+/Er3+-codoped glasses ...through frequency upconversion. Multi-Stokes Raman emissions generated in an optical fiber pumped at 1.064µm were used, seeking out the 3H5 thulium absorption band around 1.2µm as the departure point. The new and efficient excitation approach allowed the generation of near infrared (800nm), red (650nm), and blue (480nm) emission due to frequency upconversion excited via ground-state absorption and excited-state absorption in Tm3+ ions. Energy-transfer followed by excited-state absorption in Er3+ ions, provided the generation of the green (530, 550nm) and red (660nm) components to compose white light. The excitation mechanism for the Tm3+ ions is assigned to stepwise multi-wavelength excitation using Stokes Raman emission in an optical fiber, followed by stepwise excited-state absorption of the pump photons. Energy-transfer Tm3+3F4 + Er3+4I15/2 →Tm3+3H6 + Er3+4I9/2 followed by excited-state absorption of multi-Stokes Raman emissions populate erbium visible emitting level. Excitation power color tuneability of the overall light emission was also achieved.

Abstract
Volumetric laser endomicroscopy (VLE) has been shown to improve detection of early neoplasia in Barrett’s esophagus (BE). However, diagnostic performance using histopathology-correlated VLE ...regions of interest (ROIs) has not been adequately studied. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of VLE assessors for identification of early BE neoplasia in histopathology-correlated VLE ROIs. In total, 191 ROIs (120 nondysplastic and 71 neoplastic) from 50 BE patients were evaluated in a random order using a web-based module. All ROIs contained histopathology correlations enabled by VLE laser marking. Assessors were blinded to endoscopic BE images and histology. ROIs were first scored as nondysplastic or neoplastic. Level of confidence was assigned to the predicted diagnosis. Outcome measures were: (i) diagnostic performance of VLE assessors for identification of BE neoplasia in all VLE ROIs, defined as accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity; (ii) diagnostic performance of VLE assessors for only high level of confidence predictions; and (iii) interobserver agreement. Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for BE neoplasia identification were 79% (confidence interval CI, 75–83), 75% (CI, 71–79), and 81% (CI, 76–86), respectively. When neoplasia was identified with a high level of confidence, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 88%, 83%, and 90%, respectively. The overall strength of interobserver agreement was fair (k = 0.29). VLE assessors can identify BE neoplasia with reasonable diagnostic accuracy in histopathology-correlated VLE ROIs, and accuracy is enhanced when BE neoplasia is identified with high level of confidence. Future work should focus on renewed VLE image reviewing criteria and real-time automatic assessment of VLE scans.
