ABSTRACT
We introduce the Uchuu suite of large high-resolution cosmological N-body simulations. The largest simulation, named Uchuu, consists of 2.1 trillion (12 8003) dark matter particles in a box ...of side-length 2.0 $\, h^{-1} \, \rm Gpc$, with particle mass of 3.27 × 108$\, h^{-1}\, \rm M_{\odot }$. The highest resolution simulation, Shin-Uchuu, consists of 262 billion (64003) particles in a box of side-length 140 $\, h^{-1} \, \rm Mpc$, with particle mass of 8.97 × 105$\, h^{-1}\, \rm M_{\odot }$. Combining these simulations, we can follow the evolution of dark matter haloes and subhaloes spanning those hosting dwarf galaxies to massive galaxy clusters across an unprecedented volume. In this first paper, we present basic statistics, dark matter power spectra, and the halo and subhalo mass functions, which demonstrate the wide dynamic range and superb statistics of the Uchuu suite. From an analysis of the evolution of the power spectra, we conclude that our simulations remain accurate from the baryon acoustic oscillation scale down to the very small. We also provide parameters of a mass–concentration model, which describes the evolution of halo concentration and reproduces our simulation data to within 5 per cent for haloes with masses spanning nearly eight orders of magnitude at redshift 0 ≤ z ≤ 14. There is an upturn in the mass–concentration relation for the population of all haloes and of relaxed haloes at z ≳ 0.5, whereas no upturn is detected at z < 0.5. We make publicly available various N-body products as part of Uchuu Data Release 1 on the Skies & Universes site.1 Future releases will include gravitational lensing maps and mock galaxy, X-ray cluster, and active galactic nucleus catalogues.
ABSTRACT
Star-forming galaxies with strong nebular and collisional emission lines are privileged target galaxies in forthcoming cosmological large galaxy redshift surveys. We use the COSMOS2015 ...photometric catalogue to model galaxy spectral energy distributions and emission-line fluxes. We adopt an empirical but physically motivated model that uses information from the best-fitting spectral energy distribution of stellar continuum to each galaxy. The emission-line flux model is calibrated and validated against direct flux measurements in subsets of galaxies that have 3D-HST or zCOSMOS-Bright spectra. We take a particular care in modelling dust attenuation such that our model can explain both Hα and O ii observed fluxes at different redshifts. We find that a simple solution to this is to introduce a redshift evolution in the dust attenuation fraction parameter, f = Estar(B − V)/Egas(B − V), as f(z) = 0.44 + 0.2z. From this catalogue, we derive the Hα and O ii luminosity functions up to redshifts of about 2.5 after carefully accounting for emission line flux and redshift errors. This allows us to make predictions for Hα and O ii galaxy number counts in next-generation cosmological redshift surveys. Our modelled emission lines and spectra in the COSMOS2015 catalogue shall be useful to study the target selection for planned next-generation galaxy redshift surveys and we make them publicly available as ‘EL-COSMOS’ on the ASPIC data base.

ABSTRACT
The Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) uses data taken with the MegaCam mosaic imager on CFHT to produce images of 18.60 deg$^2$ with median seeing ...of FWHM = 0.92 arcsec and to a median depth of $U = 27.1$ AB (5$\sigma$ in 2 arcsec apertures), with selected areas that total 1.36 deg$^2$ reaching a median depth of $U=27.7$ AB. These are the deepest U-band images assembled to date over this large an area. These data are located in four fields also imaged to comparably faint levels in $grizy$ and several narrowband filters as part of the Hyper Suprime–Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). These CFHT and Subaru data sets will remain unmatched in their combination of area and depth until the advent of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. This paper provides an overview of the scientific motivation for CLAUDS and gives details of the observing strategy, observations, data reduction, and data merging with the HSC-SSP. Three early applications of these deep data are used to illustrate the potential of the data set: deep U-band galaxy number counts, z$\sim$ 3 Lyman break galaxy selection, and photometric redshifts improved by adding CLAUDS U to the Subaru HSC $grizy$ photometry.
ABSTRACT
We produce 1000 realizations of synthetic clustering catalogues for each type of the tracers used for the baryon acoustic oscillation and redshift space distortion analysis of the Sloan ...Digital Sky Surveys-iv extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey final data release (eBOSS DR16), covering the redshift range from 0.6 to 2.2, to provide reliable estimates of covariance matrices and test the robustness of the analysis pipeline with respect to observational systematics. By extending the Zel’dovich approximation density field with an effective tracer bias model calibrated with the clustering measurements from the observational data, we accurately reproduce the two- and three-point clustering statistics of the eBOSS DR16 tracers, including their cross-correlations in redshift space with very low computational costs. In addition, we include the gravitational evolution of structures and sample selection biases at different redshifts, as well as various photometric and spectroscopic systematic effects. The agreements on the auto-clustering statistics between the data and mocks are generally within $1\, \sigma$ variances inferred from the mocks, for scales down to a few $h^{-1}\, {\rm Mpc}$ in configuration space, and up to $0.3\, h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ in Fourier space. For the cross correlations between different tracers, the same level of consistency presents in configuration space, while there are only discrepancies in Fourier space for scales above $0.15\, h\, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The accurate reproduction of the data clustering statistics permits reliable covariances for multi-tracer analysis.
ABSTRACT
We develop a series of N-body data challenges, functional to the final analysis of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Data Release 16 (DR16) galaxy sample. The ...challenges are primarily based on high-fidelity catalogues constructed from the Outer Rim simulation – a large box size realization (3h−1Gpc) characterized by an unprecedented combination of volume and mass resolution, down to 1.85 × 109h−1M⊙. We generate synthetic galaxy mocks by populating Outer Rim haloes with a variety of halo occupation distribution (HOD) schemes of increasing complexity, spanning different redshift intervals. We then assess the performance of three complementary redshift space distortion (RSD) models in configuration and Fourier space, adopted for the analysis of the complete DR16 eBOSS sample of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). We find all the methods mutually consistent, with comparable systematic errors on the Alcock–Paczynski parameters and the growth of structure, and robust to different HOD prescriptions – thus validating the robustness of the models and the pipelines used for the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and full shape clustering analysis. In particular, all the techniques are able to recover α∥ and α⊥ to within $0.9{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, and fσ8 to within $1.5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. As a by-product of our work, we are also able to gain interesting insights on the galaxy–halo connection. Our study is relevant for the final eBOSS DR16 ‘consensus cosmology’, as the systematic error budget is informed by testing the results of analyses against these high-resolution mocks. In addition, it is also useful for future large-volume surveys, since similar mock-making techniques and systematic corrections can be readily extended to model for instance the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) galaxy sample.
ABSTRACT
The completed extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) catalogues contain redshifts of 344 080 quasars at 0.8 < z < 2.2, 174 816 luminous red galaxies between 0.6 < z < 1.0, ...and 173 736 emission-line galaxies over 0.6 < z < 1.1 in order to constrain the expansion history of the Universe and the growth rate of structure through clustering measurements. Mechanical limitations of the fibre-fed spectrograph on the Sloan telescope prevent two fibres being placed closer than 62 arcsec in a single pass of the instrument. These ‘fibre collisions’ strongly correlate with the intrinsic clustering of targets and can bias measurements of the two-point correlation function resulting in a systematic error on the inferred values of the cosmological parameters. We combine the new techniques of pairwise-inverse probability and the angular upweighting (PIP+ANG) to correct the clustering measurements for the effect of fibre collisions. Using mock catalogues, we show that our corrections provide unbiased measurements, within data precision, of both the projected $\rm {\mathit{ w}_p}\left(\mathit{ r}_p\right)$ and the redshift-space multipole ξ(ℓ = 0, 2, 4)(s) correlation functions down to $0.1\, h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$, regardless of the tracer type. We apply the corrections to the eBOSS DR16 catalogues. We find that, on scales $s\gtrsim 20\, h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ for ξℓ, as used to make baryon acoustic oscillation and large-scale redshift-space distortion measurements, approximate methods such as nearest-neighbour upweighting are sufficiently accurate given the statistical errors of the data. Using the PIP method, for the first time for a spectroscopic program of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we are able to successfully access the one-halo term in the clustering measurements down to $\sim 0.1\, h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ scales. Our results will therefore allow studies that use the small-scale clustering to strengthen the constraints on both cosmological parameters and the halo occupation distribution models.
ABSTRACT
We measure the galaxy two- and three-point correlation functions at z = 0.5, 0.7 and z = 0.7, 0.9, from the Public Data Release 2 (PDR2) of the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey ...(VIPERS). We model the two statistics including a non-linear one-loop model for the two-point function and a tree-level model for the three-point function, and perform a joint likelihood analysis. The entire process and non-linear corrections are tested and validated through the use of the 153 highly realistic VIPERS mock catalogues, showing that they are robust down to scales as small as 10 $h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$. The mocks are also adopted to compute the covariance matrix that we use for the joint two- and three-point analysis. Despite the limited statistics of the two (volume-limited) subsamples analysed, we demonstrate that such a combination successfully breaks the degeneracy existing at two-point level between clustering amplitude σ8, linear bias b1, and the linear growth rate of fluctuations f. For the latter, in particular, we measure $f(z=0.61)=0.64^{+0.55}_{-0.37}$ and f(z = 0.8) = 1.0 ± 1.0, while the amplitude of clustering is found to be σ8(z = 0.61) = 0.50 ± 0.12 and $\sigma _8(z=0.8)=0.39^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$. These values are in excellent agreement with the extrapolation of a Planck cosmology.

ABSTRACT
We use mock galaxy data from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) to test the performance of the Multi-Tracer Optimal Estimator (MTOE) of Abramo et al. as a tool to ...measure the monopoles of the power spectra of multiple tracers of the large-scale structure, $P^{(0)}_\alpha (\mathbf {k})$. We show that MTOE provides more accurate measurements than the standard technique of Feldman, Kaiser & Peacock (FKP), independently of the tracer-selection strategy adopted, on both small and large scales. The largest improvements on individual $P^{(0)}_\alpha (\mathbf {k})$ are obtained on small scales, using a colour–magnitude selection, due to MTOE being naturally better equipped to deal with shot noise: we report an average error reduction with respect to FKP of $\sim 30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ at $0.3 \lt k \, h$ Mpc−1 < 0.5, with improvements exceeding 40–50 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ for some tracers. On large scales (kh Mpc−1 ≲ 0.1), the gain in accuracy resulting from cosmic-variance cancellation is ∼10 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ for the ratios of $P^{(0)}_\alpha (\mathbf {k})$. We have carried out a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis to determine the impact of these gains on several quantities derived from $P^{(0)}_\alpha (\mathbf {k})$. If we pushthat the estimated power spectra are themselves the measurement to scales $0.3 \lt k \, h$ Mpc−1 < 0.5, the average improvements are $\sim 30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ for the amplitudes of the monopoles, $\sim 75{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ for the monopole ratios, and $\sim 20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ for the linear galaxy biases. Our results highlight the potential of MTOE to shed light upon the physics that operate both on large and small cosmological scales. The effect of MTOE on cosmological constraints using VIPERS data will be addressed in a separate paper.
ABSTRACT
We test the history of structure formation from redshift 1 to today by matching galaxies from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with ...dark matter haloes in the MultiDark, Small MultiDark Planck (SMDPL), N-body simulation. We first show that the standard subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) recipe implemented with MultiDark fits the clustering of galaxies well both at redshift 0 for SDSS and at redshift 1 for VIPERS. This is an important validation of the SHAM model at high redshift. We then remap the simulation time steps to test alternative growth histories and infer the growth index γ = 0.6 ± 0.3. This analysis demonstrates the power of using N-body simulations to forward model galaxy surveys for cosmological inference. Galaxy redshift surveys are subject to incompleteness and inhomogeneous sampling due to the various constraints inherent to spectroscopic observations. This can introduce systematic errors ...on the summary statistics of interest, which need to be mitigated in cosmological analysis to achieve high accuracy. Standard practices involve applying weighting schemes based on completeness estimates across the survey footprint, possibly supplemented with additional weighting schemes accounting for density-dependent effects. In this work, we concentrate on pure angular systematics and describe an alternative approach consisting in analysing the galaxy two-point correlation function where angular modes are nulled. By construction, this procedure removes all possible known and unknown sources of angular observational systematics, but also part of the cosmological signal. We use a modified Landy–Szalay estimator for the two-point correlation function that relies on an additional random catalogue where angular positions are randomly drawn from the galaxy catalogue, and provide an analytical model to describe this modified statistic. We test the model by performing an analysis of the full anisotropic clustering in mock catalogues of luminous red and emission-line galaxies at 0.43 < z < 1.1. We find that the model fully accounts for the modified correlation function in redshift space, without introducing new nuisance parameters. The derived cosmological parameters from the analysis of baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions display slightly larger statistical uncertainties, mostly for the growth rate of structure parameter fσ8 that exhibits a $50{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ statistical error increase, but free from angular systematic error.
