KASCADE-Grande is a large detector array for observations of the energy spectrum as well as the chemical composition of cosmic ray air showers up to primary energies of 1 EeV. The multi-detector ...arrangement allows to measure the electromagnetic and muonic components for individual air showers. In this analysis, the reconstruction of the all-particle energy spectrum is based on the size spectra of the charged particle component. The energy is calibrated by using Monte Carlo simulations performed with CORSIKA and high-energy interaction models QGSJet, EPOS and SIBYLL. In all cases FLUKA has been used as low-energy interaction model. In this contribution the resulting spectra by means of different hadronic interaction models will be compared and discussed.

LOPES is a digital antenna array for the radio measurement of cosmic-ray air showers at energies around 1017 eV. It is triggered by the KASCADE-Grande air-shower array at the Karlsruhe Institute of ...Technology (KIT), Germany. Because of an absolute amplitude calibration and a sophisticated data analysis, LOPES can test models for the radio emission to an up-to-now unachieved level, thus improving our understanding of the radio emission mechanisms. Recent REAS simulations of the air-shower radio emission come closer to the measurements than any previously tested simulations. We have determined the radio-reconstruction precision of interesting air-shower parameters by comparing LOPES reconstructions to both REAS simulations and KASCADE-Grande measurements, and present our latest results for the angular resolution, the energy and the Xmax reconstruction based on the radio measurement of about 500 air showers. Although the precision of LOPES is limited by the high level of anthropogenic noise at KIT, it opens a promising perspective for next-generation radio arrays in regions with a lower ambient noise level.
The detection of high-energy cosmic rays above a few hundred TeV is realized by the observation of extensive air-showers. By using the multi-detector setup of KASCADE-Grande, and here in particular ...the detectors of the large Grande array, the energy spectrum and the elemental composition of high-energy cosmic rays in the energy range from 10 PeV to 1 EeV are investigated. The estimation of energy and mass of the high-energy primary particles is based on the combined analysis of the total number of charged particles and the total number of muons measured by the detector arrays of Grande and KASCADE, respectively. The latest analysis results have shown that in the all-particle spectrum two features are present: a hardening of the spectrum at energies around 20 PeV and a steepening, i.e. a knee-like structure, at 80-90 PeV. The latter one was found to be due to a decrease of flux of the heavy mass component.
We present the results of the search for large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of cosmic rays performed with the KASCADE-Grande experiment at energies higher than eV. To eliminate ...spurious anisotropies due to atmospheric or instrumental effects we apply the east-west method. We show, using the solar time distribution of the number of counts, that this technique allow us to remove correctly the count variations not associated to real anisotropies. By applying the east-west method we obtain the distribution of number of counts in intervals of 20 minutes of sidereal time. This distribution is then analyzed by searching for a dipole component; the significance of the amplitude of the first harmonic is 3.5 , therefore, we derive its upper limit. The phase of the first harmonic is determined with an error of a few hours and is in agreement with the measurements obtained in the 1014 < E < 2 × 1015 eV energy range by the EAS-TOP, IceCube, and IceTop experiments. This supports the hypothesis of a change of the phase of the first harmonic at energies greater than ∼2 × 1014 eV.
Using data measured by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, an upper limit to the flux of ultra-high energy gamma-rays in the primary cosmic-ray flux is determined. KASCADE-Grande measures the ...electromagnetic and muonic components for individual air showers in the energy range from 10 PeV up to 1 EeV. The analysis is performed by selecting air showers with low muon contents. A preliminary result on the 90% C.L. upper limit to the relative intensity of gamma-ray with respect to cosmic ray primaries is presented and compared with limits reported by other measurements.
LOPES was a digital antenna array operating for approximately 10 years until spring 2013 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Triggered by the co-located KASCADE-Grande air-shower ...experiment, it measured the radio signal of around 1000 cosmic-ray air showers with energies E 1017 eV in an effective band of 43 - 74 MHz. Using the interferometric technique of cross-correlation beamforming, LOPES could reconstruct the shower direction with an accuracy < 0.7°, the shower energy with a precision < 20%, and the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum, Xmax, with a precision < 95g cm2. In particular the reconstruction of the shower maximum suffers from significant measurement uncertainties due to the radio-loud environment of the site. This article summarizes our latest results on the reconstruction of the shower maximum, using two independent methods: the steepness of the hyperbolic radio wavefront and the slope of the lateral distribution of the radio amplitude. Moreover, we show vectorial measurements of the electric field with the tripole antennas of the latest LOPES setup. Finally, we discuss open questions as well as the potential impact of the lessons learned at LOPES for future antenna arrays.

KCDC, the 'KASCADE Cosmic-ray Data Centre', is a web portal, where data of astroparticle physics experiments will be made available for the interested public. The KASCADE experiment, financed by ...public money, was a large-area detector for the measurement of high-energy cosmic rays via the detection of air showers. KASCADE and its extension KASCADE-Grande stopped finally the active data acquisition of all its components including the radio EAS experiment LOPES end of 2012 after more than 20 years of data taking. In a first release, with KCDC we provide to the public the measured and reconstructed parameters of more than 160 million air showers. In addition, KCDC provides the conceptional design, how the data can be treated and processed so that they are also usable outside the community of experts in the research field. Detailed educational examples make a use also possible for high-school students and early stage researchers.
KASCADE-Grande is an air-shower observatory devoted to the detection of cosmic rays with energies in the range of 1016 to 1018 eV. This energy region is of particular interest for the cosmic ray ...astrophysics, since it is the place where some models predict the existence of a transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays and the presence of a break in the flux of its heavy component. The detection of these features requires detailed and simultaneous measurements of the energy and composition of cosmic rays with sufficient statistics. These kinds of studies are possible for the first time in KASCADE-Grande due to the accurate measurements of several air-shower observables, i.e., the number of charged particles, electrons and muons in the shower, using the different detector systems of the observatory. In this contribution, a detailed look into the composition of 1016 - 1018 eV cosmic rays with KASCADE-Grande is presented.
The KASCADE experiment and its extension KASCADE-Grande have significantly contributed to the current knowledge about the energy spectrum and composition of cosmic rays (CRs) with energies between ...the knee and the ankle. However, the data of both experiments were analysed separately, although Grande used the muon information of the KASCADE-array. A coherent analysis based on the combined data of both arrays is expected to profit from reconstructed shower observables with even higher accuracy compared to the stand-alone analyses. In addition, a significantly larger fiducial area is available. The aim of this analysis is to obtain the spectrum and composition of CRs in the range from 1014 to 1018 eV with a larger number of events and further reduced uncertainties using one unique reconstruction procedure for the entire energy range. This contribution will describe the motivation, the concept, and the current status of the combined analysis.
KASCADE-Grande is an air shower observatory devoted to the detection of cosmic rays in the 1016 – 1018eV energy range. For each event the arrival direction, the total number of charged particles ...(Nch) and the total number of muons (Nμ), at detection level (i.e. 110 m a.s.l.), are measured. The detection of these observarbles, with high accuracy, allows the study of the primary spectrum, chemical composition and large scale anisotropies, that are the relevant informations to investigate the astrophysics of cosmic rays in this energy range. These studies are of main importance to deeply investigate the change of slope of the primary spectrum detected at ~ 4 × 1015 eV, also known as the knee, and to search for the transition from galactic to extra-galactic cosmic rays.
