It remains unclear if quality of life (QoL) improvements could be expected in young patients after malignant bone tumour surgery after 2 years. To assess the course of QoL over time during a ...long‐term follow‐up, malignant bone tumour survivors of a previous short‐term study were included. Assessments were done at least 5 years after surgery. QoL was measured with Short‐form (SF)‐36, TNO‐AZL Questionnaire for Adult's Quality of Life (TAAQOL) and Bone tumour (Bt)‐DUX. QoL throughout the follow‐up was analysed by linear mixed model analysis. From the original cohort of 44 patients; 20 patients were included for this study, 10 males; mean age at surgery 15.1 years and mean follow‐up 7.2 years. Twenty‐one patients of the initial cohort (47%) deceased. Fifteen patients (75%) underwent limb‐salvage and five (25%) ablative surgery. QoL improved significantly during follow‐up at Physical Component Summary Scale scale of the SF‐36 and TAAQOL and all subscales of the Bt‐DUX (p < .01). No significant differences were found between current evaluations and previous evaluations at 2 years after surgery (p = .41–.98). Significant advantages after limb‐salvage were seen at the PCS scale of the SF‐36 (MD 13.7, p = .05) and the cosmetic scale of the Bt‐DUX (MD 17.7, p = .04).
Over the last decades, several individual studies on sex differences in carotid atherosclerosis have been performed covering a wide range of plaque characteristics and including different ...populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarize previously reported results on sex differences in carotid atherosclerosis and present a roadmap explaining next steps needed for implementing this knowledge in clinical practice.
We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and Google Scholar for eligible studies including both male and female participants reporting prevalence of imaging characteristics of carotid atherosclerosis and meta-analyzed these studies. Studies had to report at least the following: (1) calcifications; (2) lipid-rich necrotic core; (3) intraplaque hemorrhage; (4) thin-or-ruptured fibrous cap; (5) plaque ulceration; (6) degree of stenosis; (7) plaque size; or (8) plaque inflammation. We prespecified which imaging modalities had to be used per plaque characteristic and excluded ultrasonography.
We included 42 articles in our meta-analyses (ranging from 2 through 23 articles per plaque characteristic). Men had more frequently a larger plaque compared to women and, moreover, had more often plaques with calcifications (odds ratio=1.57 95% CI, 1.23-2.02), lipid-rich necrotic core (odds ratio=1.87 95% CI, 1.36-2.57), and intraplaque hemorrhage (odds ratio=2.52 95% CI, 1.74-3.66), or an ulcerated plaque (1.81 95% CI, 1.30-2.51). Furthermore, we found more pronounced sex differences for lipid-rich necrotic core in symptomatic opposed to asymptomatic participants.
In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we demonstrate convincing evidence for sex differences in carotid atherosclerosis. All kinds of plaque features-plaque size, composition, and morphology-were more common or larger in men compared to women. Our results highlight that sex is an important variable to include in both study design and clinical-decision making. Further investigation of sex-specific stroke risks with regard to plaque composition is warranted.
Objective:
To investigate the rate and stability of impairments in children born preterm by assessing (1) early and school-age outcome in four developmental domains and (2) individual changes in ...outcome at both timepoints.
Design:
Prospective, longitudinal cohort study in children born in 2006–2007, <32 weeks' gestation. Follow-up at 2 and 10 years of age included standardized neurological, motor, cognitive and behavioral assessments. Children were categorized as having no, mild or moderate-severe impairment in these four domains. A composite impairment score was composed and the number of domains with impairments counted. For each child, individual outcomes at both timepoints were compared.
Results:
Follow-up at both time-points was available in 71/113(63%) children. At group level, there were no significant changes in the severity of impairments per domain. However, at individual level, there were less children with a mild abnormal composite score at 10 years of age (44 vs. 20%;
p
= 0.006), and more with a moderate-severe abnormal composite score (12 vs. 35%; p = 0.001). Especially children with normal/mild outcome at 2 years were likely to shift to other outcome categories over time.
Conclusions:
Children with early severe impairment are likely experiencing impairments later on, but early normal/mild abnormal outcomes should be interpreted with care, considering the large individual shifts over time. Long-term follow-up in all children born very preterm should therefore be continued to at least school-age.
Incidence of ischemic stroke differs between men and women, with substantially higher rates in men. The underlying mechanism of this difference remains poorly understood but may be because of ...differences in carotid atherosclerosis. Using an in-depth imaging-based approach, we investigated differences between carotid plaque composition and morphology in male and female patients with stroke, taking into account differences in total plaque burden. Additionally, we investigated all possible within-artery combinations of plaque characteristics to explore differences between various plaque phenotypes.
We included 156 men and 68 women from the PARISK (Plaque At Risk) study, a prospective cohort study of patients with recent ischemic cerebrovascular symptoms and <70% ipsilateral carotid stenosis. Plaque characteristics (intraplaque hemorrhage IPH, lipid-rich necrotic core LRNC, calcifications, thin-or-ruptured fibrous cap, ulcerations, total plaque volume) were assessed with magnetic resonance imaging and multidetector-row computed tomography angiography. We used multivariable logistic and linear regression analyses to assess sex differences in plaque characteristics.
We found significant difference in total plaque volume between men and women (β=22.9 mm
95% CI, 15.4-30.5; mean volume in men 1399±425 mm
, in women 1011±242 mm
). Additionally, men were more likely to have IPH (odds ratio OR=2.8 95% CI, 1.3-6.3; IPH proportion in men 49%, in women 16%) and LRNC (OR=2.4 95% CI, 1.2-4.7; LRNC proportion in men 73%, in women 41%) even after adjustment for total plaque volume. We found no sex-specific differences in plaque volume-corrected volumes of IPH, LRNC, and calcifications. In terms of coexistence of plaque characteristics, we found that men had more often a plaque with coexistence of calcifications, LRNC, and IPH (OR=2.7 95% CI, 1.2-7.0), with coexistence of thin-or-ruptured fibrous cap/ulcerations, LRNC, and IPH (OR=2.4 95% CI, 1.1-5.9), and with coexistence of all plaque characteristics (OR=3.0 95% CI, 1.2-8.6).
In symptomatic patients with mild-to-moderate carotid stenosis, men are more likely to have a high-risk carotid plaque with IPH and LRNC than women, regardless of total plaque burden. Men also have more often a plaque with multiple vulnerable plaque components, which could comprise an even higher stroke risk. Prematurely born children are at higher risk for long-term adverse motor and cognitive outcomes. The aim of this paper was to compare quantitative measures derived from electroencephalography (EEG) ...between extremely (EP) and very prematurely (VP) born children at 9–10 years of age.
Fifty-five children born <32 weeks' of gestation underwent EEG at 9–10 years of age and were assessed for motor development and cognitive outcome. Relative frequency power and functional connectivity, as measured by the Phase Lag Index (PLI), were calculated for all frequency bands. Per subject, power spectrum and functional connectivity results were averaged over all channels and pairwise PLI values to explore differences in global frequency power and functional connectivity between EP and VP children. Brain networks were constructed for the upper alpha frequency band using the Minimum Spanning Tree method and were compared between EP and VP children. In addition, the relationships between upper alpha quantitative EEG results and cognitive and motor outcomes were investigated.
Relative power and functional connectivity were significantly higher in VP than EP children in the upper alpha frequency band, and VP children had more integrated networks. A strong positive correlation was found between relative upper alpha power and motor outcome whilst controlling for gestational age, age during EEG recording, and gender (ρ = 0.493, p = 0.004).
These results suggest that 9–10 years after birth, the effects of the degree of prematurity can be observed in terms of alterations in functional brain activity and that motor deficits are associated with decreases in relative upper alpha power.

Phomopsins (PHO) are mycotoxins produced by the fungus Diaporthe toxica (also referred to as Phomopsis leptostromiformis). Lupin is the most important host crop for this fungus and PHO are suspected ...as cause of lupinosis, a deadly liver disease, in sheep. Lupin is currently in use to replace genetically modified soy in many food products available on the European market. However, a validated method for analysis of PHO is not available until now. In this work, a dilute-and-shoot LC-MS/MS-based method was developed for the quantitative determination and identification of phomopsin A (PHO-A) in lupin and lupin-containing food. The method involved extraction by a mixture of acetonitrile/water/acetic acid (80/20/1 v/v), dilution of the sample in water, and direct injection of the crude extract after centrifugation. The method was validated at 5 and 25 µg PHO-A kg
−1
product. The average recovery and RSD obtained were 79% and 9%, respectively. The LOQ (the lowest level for which adequate recovery and RSD were demonstrated) was 5 µg PHO-A kg
−1
. Identification of PHO-A was based on retention time and two transitions (789 > 226 and 789 > 323). Using the average of solvent standards from the sequence as a reference, retention times were all within ± 0.03 min and ion ratios were within ± 12%, which is compliant with European Union requirements. The LOD (S/N = 3 for the least sensitive transition) was 1 µg PHO-A kg
−1
product. Forty-two samples of lupin and lupin-containing food products were collected in 2011-2012 from grocery stores and internet shops in the Netherlands and analysed. In none of the samples was PHO-A detected.

Background
Symptoms of anxiety and depression affect the daily life of people with multiple sclerosis (MS). This study examined work difficulties and their relationship with anxiety, depression and ...coping style in people with MS.
Methods
219 employed people with MS (median age = 43 years, 79% female) completed questionnaires on anxiety, depression, coping style, demographics and work difficulties, and underwent a neurological examination. Two regression analyses were performed with work difficulties as the dependent variable and either anxiety or depression as continuous independent variables. Coping style, age, gender, educational level, MS-related disability and disease duration were added as additional predictors, as well as interaction terms between coping style and either symptoms of depression or anxiety.
Results
A significant model was found (F(10,205) = 13.14, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.39) in which anxiety, emotion- and avoidance-oriented coping and MS-related disability were positively related to work difficulties. The analysis of depression resulted in a significant model (F(10,205) = 14.98, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.42) in which depression, emotion- and avoidance-oriented coping and MS-related disability were positively related to work difficulties. None of the interaction effects were significant.
Conclusions
Work difficulties were positively related to anxiety, depression, emotion- and avoidance-oriented coping and MS-related disability in workers with MS.
Previous research discovered a protective effect of higher conscientiousness against a 3-year deterioration in employment status in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). To replicate these ...findings, we used data from a multicentre prospective cohort study where 145 employed pwMS completed questionnaires, neurological and neuropsychological examinations at baseline and after 3 years. A 3-year deterioration in employment status was reported in 31.0%. We observed no differences in personality, demographics or clinical characteristics between pwMS with deteriorated or stable employment status. These null findings may be partly explained by the classification of deteriorated employment status, which does not reflect Dutch labour conditions.
This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Pediatric Outcome Data Collecting Instrument (PODCI) into the Dutch language and evaluate its measurement properties among children (age ...3-10) with Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy (NBPP).
The PODCI was translated and adapted according to international guidelines and administered to 10 children with NBPP before and after surgery and thereafter twice again. Subsequently, the Mallet-score, Assisting Hand Assessment and active Range of Motion (aROM) were recorded. Cronbach's-α and correlations between the PODCI and other outcome measures were determined, as well as Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC). In addition, effect sizes (ES), Standard Response Means (SRM) and change scores with the 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) were calculated.
The final Dutch PODCI `Upper Extremity and Physical Function' subscale and total score `Global Functioning' showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's-α 0.695/0.781) and reliability (ICC 0.97/0.80) and were significantly associated with aROM and the Mallet-score. After surgery a significant change of the total score (ES 0.57, SRM 1.23, change 4.22 points, 95% CI 1.04-7.4) was seen.
The final Dutch PODCI had good measurement properties and appears useful in evaluating quality of life and functioning in children with NBPP.
