The book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter one contains an overview of problems and approaches, including the basics of model and full scale testing. An introduction to computational fluid dynamics is given, including a discussion of applications. The next four chapters cover the subjects: propellers, resistance and propulsion, seakeeping and manoeuvring. These chapters present basic methods, such as model testing, extrapolation to full scale, and procedures for design. Substantial parts of each chapter include numerical methods and their applications. The last two chapters are devoted to boundary element methods for resistance and seakeeping.
This book gives advice to students and naval architects on how to design ships - in particular with regard to hull design. The previous edition of this book was published in 1987. Since then, there ...have been numerous important developments in this area and the new additions to this book reflect these changes. Chapter 3 has been completely rewritten with added information on methodology of optimization, optimization shells and concept exploration methods. There is also a new sub-chapter on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for ship-hull design. Plus, a new method to predict ship resistance based on the evaluation of modern ship hull design will be detailed. The emphasis of the this book is on design for operational economy. The material is directly usable not only in practice, in the design office and by shipowners, but also by students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A 3-d seakeeping code uses first-order Rankine panels with special numerical integration on the ship's hull and Rankine point source clusters above the free surface. The code computes the motions of ...the ship in regular waves of small height (linearized). The steady flow is captured without simplification by solving the fully nonlinear wave-resistance problem first. A special treatment of the surge motion considers the influence of periodic quantities on thrust and resistance, and improves surge motion predictions. Radiation and open-boundary conditions are enforced by staggered grids. Results for the ITTC standard test case S-175 containership agree well with experiments except for very long waves. The importance of capturing the three-dimensional steady flow contributions is also demonstrated.
The design of ships and offshore structures is increasingly supported by sophisticated analyses. Traditionally, this design has been based on experience. This is still true to some extent, but ...increasingly we rely on 'virtual experience' from dedicated and well chosen simulations. Scope and depth of these simulations guiding our decisions in design and operation of ships have developed very dynamically over the past decade. We describe here the state of the art as reflected in our work, building on previous work for ships, Fach and Bertram (2006), Bertram and Couser (2007), Bertram (2008), but now with particular focus on fluid dynamics and applications for ocean engineering structures.
This paper surveys developments in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) applications for maritime structures (ships, propellers, and offshore structures) over the past decade. Progress is significant ...in integrating the process chain, particularly more automated model generation. Increased hardware power and progress in various aspects of the flow solvers allow more sophisticated applications and wider scope of applications. Selected examples taken from industry and research applications show the increasing importance of CFD in earlier design stages.
