A young individual of Isurus oxyrinchus was caught by a commercial longline off Dana Island (Mersin Bay, northeastern Mediterranean Sea) at a depth of 72 m on May 18th 2020. Morphometric measurements ...of the specimen were recorded and its photographs were taken. The examined specimen is now being preserved in the Museum of Systematics at Faculty of Fisheries of Mersin University, under the reference number MEUFC-20-11-132. This occurrence of a young female specimen reported in this study is adding a new location (Mersin Bay) from the Mediterranean's Turkish waters.
Isurus oxyrinchus'un genç bir bireyi, 18 Mayıs 2020 tarihinde Dana Adası açıklarında (Mersin Körfezi, Kuzeydoğu Akdeniz) 72 m derinlikte ticari balıkçılık sırasında pareketa ile yakalanmıştır. Örneğin morfometrik ölçümleri kaydedildi ve fotoğrafları çekildi. İncelenen örnek şu anda Mersin Üniversitesi Su Ürünleri Fakültesi Sistematik Müzesi'nde MEUFC-20-11-132 örnek numarasıyla muhafaza edilmektedir. I. oxyrinchus'un Doğu Akdeniz ve Türkiye sularında nadir görüldüğü aşikardır.
I dati disponibili rivelano che ľattuale fauna di squali delle acque turche comprende 37 specie confermate: Hexanchus griseus, Heptranchias perlo, Echinorhinus brucus, Squalus acanthias, S. ...blainvillei, Centrophorus cf. uyato, Etmopterus spinax, Somniosus rostratus, Oxynotus centrina, Dalatias licha, Squatina aculeata, S. oculata, S. squatina, Carcharias taurus, Odontaspis ferox, Alopias superciliosus, A. vulpinus, Cetorhinus maximus, Carcharodon carcharias, Isurus oxyrinchus, Lamna nasus, Galeus melastomus, Scyliorhinus canicula, S. stellaris, Galeorhinus galeus, Mustelus asterias, M. mustelus, M. punctulatus, Carcharhinus altimus, C. brachyurus, C. brevipinna, C. falciformis, C. limbatus, C. obscurus, C. plumbeus, Prionace glauca, e Sphyrna zygaena.
Seasonal aggregations of batoids were observed in Güllük Bay (souteastern Aegean Sea) based on opportunistic underwater observations between the years of 2014–2022. Torpedo marmorata, Glaucostegus ...cemiculus, Dasyatis pastinaca, Gymnura altavela and Aetomylaeus bovinus were observed in the study area. The most observed species is G. altavela (n=65) and it constitutes 51.18 percent of the whole sample, and followed by A. bovinus (n=31, 24.4%), D. pastinaca (n=12, 9.44%), G. cemiculus (n=8, 6.29%) and T. marmorata (n=2, 1.57%). Based on the seasonal occurrence data of batoids observed during the research, it is seen that the species that occurred in the region from mid-spring to mid-autumn, and the aggregations peaked in July. Seasonal aggregations of batoids may have important implications for the conservation of these species. Among the observed batoids in the present study, only G. cemiculus is currently under protection in Turkey. According to EU Regulation 1343/2011 and Annex II of the Barcelona Convention, G. altavela is a prohibited species; thus, it should not be retained on board, transhipped, landed, transferred, stored, sold or displayed or offered for sale, and masters of fishing vessels shall record in the fishing logbook any event of incidental catch and release. Therefore, as an urgent measure, at least G. altavela and A. bovinus, which are considered as “critically endangered”, should be added to the list of protected species in Turkish waters, and the aggregation site in Güllük Bay should be declared as a no-take-zone during mid-spring and throughout the summer.
Until the last quarter of the 20th century, most of our knowledge on the sharks of the Turkish waters was based on elasmobranch-specific chapters in general ichthyological inventory studies and on a ...limited number of anecdotal studies. Since the mid-1990s, however, there has been a remarkable rise in the number and quality of shark-specific studies and publications, resulting in a gradual filling of the gaps in our understanding of the sharks of the Turkish waters. Based on the publication dates, there were only 2 shark-specific articles published before 1990, 8 scientific articles about the sharks of the Turkish waters between 1990 and 2000, and as many as 88 papers dealing with several aspects of the sharks of Turkey since, for a total of 96 articles on the sharks of the Turkish waters published between 1968 and 2018. Hopefully, future studies by new generations of researchers will provide new data on several aspects of the sharks of the Turkish waters, which can deepen our understanding of them and complete their life stories.
Nine angel sharks, Squatina squatina, were recorded in different regions of Turkish waters between 21 March 2009 and February 2019. Eight specimens were captured by different means of bottom fishing ...gear (e.g., gill or trammel net, or longline) or harpoon, and 1 specimen was sighted alive. Considering the fishery statistics of angel sharks in the last 10 years and biomass and numerical abundance data on the species in Turkish waters as baseline data, an alarming reduction in the populations of S. squatina in the mentioned regions has been observed. An extensive study providing baseline information on the current spatial distribution patterns, habitat use, abundance and population structure of S. squatina in Turkish waters is an urgent necessity.
