New Middle Miocene rodent faunas from Languedoc-Roussillon (southern France); implication for biostratigraphic correlations. The fossil mammal bearing localities Blanquatère 3 (Roussillon; filling of ...a fissure in a karst) and Puisserguier (Languedoc; brackish to lake deposit) have provided Middle Miocene rodents that first allow correlating these sites to Blanquatère 1 (Roussillon; older) and La Grenatière (Languedoc; younger). Second, the occurrence of the genus Cricetodon in these newly discovered localities similarly allow revisiting the correlations already proposed with the well-known localities from the Lyon area, Vieux-Collonges and La Grive. Blanquatère 3 and Puisserguier are older than La Grive, and Blanquatère 3 is slightly older than Vieux-Collonges. The fossil bearing levels of Puisserguier is interstratified in a mainly marine succession ending with brackish to lake deposits, which includes the level of La Grenatière. The onshore (Western Béziers area) and offshore (Tramontane 1 drilling) data on the marine Miocene agree referring these deposits to the Serravallian stage, the uppermost marine levels belonging to zone NN9 (drill) and NN6 (onshore), the uppermost brackish to lake deposits cannot be younger that the Miocene deposits encountered by the drill. According to the new collected data on one side, and the Miocene chronostratigraphy it can be hypothesized that Blanquatère 3 is c. 15.5 Myr old and Puisserguier, c. 14 Myr.
The present investigation reports on the size and shape of teeth and the skull morphology of specimens from south-west Europe and North Africa genetically determined as Mus spretus and Mus musculus ...domesticus. The value of diagnostic characteristics and dental measurements classically used to distinguish the two species is tested. Revision is reported for 17 measurements and 14 morphological characters. Results were applied to unpublished fossil material from Morocco represented by lower molars. Late Pleistocene specimens of Mus from the fossil-bearing locality of Doukkala If near Rabat (Morocco) belong to a species that can be recognised as very close to M. spretus. This species likely settled in North Africa before the house mouse at a date that is still unknown.
Indépendamment des nombreux concepts d’espèces élaborés, biologistes et paléontologues peuvent, pour étudier aussi bien les diversités biologiques présentes et passées que l’évolution des espèces, ...employer un même concept qui permet d’appréhender la multiplicité des formes offertes par les êtres vivants. Mais le développement présent de leurs disciplines apporte un éclairage réciproque, longtemps inaccessible, des images morphologique (ressemblance, différence, variabilité) et génétique (liens de parenté et d’interfécondité) de l’espèce. Cela a permis de relier les observations qui relèvent les unes du « temps court » de la biologie et de l’écologie et les autres du « temps long » de la géologie. Mais, l’essor récent de l’étude du développement ouvre l’accès aux modalités du changement morphologique qui souligne, aux côtés de la multiplication des espèces, l’autre trait de l’évolution, la descendance avec modification. Plusieurs exemples pris au sein de l’ordre des rongeurs (Rodentia, Mammalia) illustreront cette situation, en abordant successivement la question de la reconnaissance des espèces, puis celle, corrélative, de la mesure des paléobiodiversités, avant d’envisager l’interprétation de l’image de l’évolution tirée de l’enregistrement paléontologique qui résulte du travail des paléontologues.
Many species concepts have been proposed, but biologists and palaeontologists can use the same concept to interpret present and past biodiversity as well as evolution at the species level. But the present development of many disciplines creates the opportunity of reciprocal enlightenment of the pictures obtained of species according to different criteria: morphology, hybridization, and affiliation. Observations of long (geological) and short (biological, ecological) time intervals can consequently be more easily integrated. The increase in number of developmental studies is also an important event for understanding morphological evolution. In this context, the present work aims to comment on a few studies done on rodents (Rodentia, Mammalia), which successively deal with species recognition, estimation of past biodiversity, and the pictures given by fossils of morphological evolution.
Many genera of arvicolid rodents (voles) contain species that spend a considerable amount of time underground. Incisors provide a considerable effort in the digging process and a difference in the ...enamel microstructure of incisors is expected between species that spend most of their life above ground and those who have greater specializations for a subterranean habitat. The ratio between the thicknesses of the two layers composing the enamel of the incisors has proved to be an effective proxy to infer fossorial activity of extinct forms of
Arvicola but this ratio exhibited no phylogenetic signal (although lifestyle was in a greater extent related to phylogeny). We were able to infer ancestral lifestyles (of extinct populations and of nodes of the phylogeny) from enamel morphologies. Inclusion of fossils did not solve the uncertainties associated with the lifestyle for the last common ancestor of extant
Arvicola species and it did not change the inferred lifestyle of several other, less inclusive, clades.
De nombreux genres de campagnols (Rodentia, Arvicolinae) incluent des espèces au mode de vie clairement fouisseur et chez lesquelles les incisives jouent un rôle actif lors du fouissement. Cette situation permet d’envisager que la microstructure de l’émail des incisives pourrait révéler des différences entre espèces qui vivent surtout en surface et celles qui ont un mode de vie souterrain marqué. Ce travail montre que le rapport des épaisseurs des deux couches de l’émail des incisives est un bon d’indicateur du caractère fouisseur des formes actuelles et qu’il pourrait s’appliquer aux formes éteintes d’
Arvicola. Ce rapport n’est pas corrélé à la phylogénie (bien que le mode de vie soit dans une grande mesure relié à la phylogénie). L’inclusion des populations éteintes n’améliore pas les incertitudes sur les inférences des modes de vie ancestraux pour le dernier ancêtre commun des espèces actuelles d’
Arvicola et elle ne change pas les états ancestraux des clades moins inclusifs.
