The First World War brought Germany's ambition as a world power participating in the western civilizing mission to an abrupt end. This shock shaped the whole scientific landscape of central Europe, ...but had special consequences for the disciplines studying oversea conditions as the ethnology (anthropology) of Bastian and Boas. The article follows the foundation steps of the "Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde" after 1929, the willingly adaptation to the new challenges of a Versailles revising politics until 1945 and the defiant collection of surviving materials or ideas under the ruins of the Second World War. A change of mind seemed to be possible only after an other twenty years, when some young anthropologists were ready to renounce their own tradition in favour to join the English speaking World Anthropology.

To the contrary, my intent was to "expose, analyze, and critique the actions of anthropologists in the Third Reich in order to break the silence on their extensive participation in racist decision ...making and destruction of human lives" (Schafft 2004:ix, emphasis added). Actually, this "blurring" of the borders between a physical and a cultural anthropology should have been investigated more deeply before the scandalous scientific assistance to genocide is named "anthropological," which automatically includes, for the English-speaking reader, German ethnology, Ethnologie or Völkerkunde.
Menschliche körperliche Bewegungen bedeuten etwas. Sie sind Zeichen, die auf andere Zeichen derselben Bewegungs-Sprache verweisen. Eine solche Einheit von Bewegung und Bedeutung ist in der ...Sportwissenschaft weitgehend unstrittig. Strittig ist, welche sachlichen und methodischen Konsequenzen das hat. Der vorliegende Band unterstellt, dass sich Bedeutungen in den Bewegungen bilden, und nicht in individuellen oder kollektiven Akteuren, die ihren Bewegungen erst noch Bedeutung verleihen. Aus der Sicht von Sportwissenschaft, Religionswissenschaft, Ingenieurwissenschaft und Ethnologie wird die Relevanz dieser Annahme erprobt. Der grundlegende, auch für den Einsatz in der Lehre geeignete Band ist ein Beitrag zur Schärfung der Rede von »Bewegungs-Kultur«.
There are different ways of conceptualizing Gypsies in the present sociological & anthropological discourse. The one suggested in this paper focuses on the cultural relations between majority & ...minority population in the sense of Gregory Bateson (1935), who reflected about "schismogenesis," or Wilhelm Emil Muhlmann (1962), who talked about "antagonistic style patterning." The precondition of such a deliberately cultural distancing is deep knowledge of the other side; only a shared space makes sense to the separation of table & bed. One of the most striking features of the Gypsy contrast culture is the solution of conflict by mobility & evasion; other aspects of the same strategy have been stylized by Judith Okely (1983) to a "purity complex," which looks very archaic or even "Indian." In Western societies, where most people lack such rules, dividing clean from unclean items is an excellent technique of social separation (which can be labeled as racism, if the excluded ones are minorities (Marushiakova/Popov 1997), whereas oriental Gypsies, whose social environment follows the purity pattern, gain their profile by breaking such taboos (Sobhi Nabil 1993, Bernhard Streck 1996). 79 References. Actualmente, en la Antropología y en la Sociología, existen discursos sobre los gitanos en los que confluyen formas muy distintas de entenderlos. El punto de vista que se defiende en este artículo se ...centra en las relaciones culturales que se establecen entre las poblaciones mayoritarias y las minorías. Para explicar estas relaciones se parte del concepto de «cismogénesis» de Gregory Bateson, y del «Modelaje antagónico de estilo» de Wilhelm Emil Mühlmann. Únicamente cuando se conoce profundamente a la otra parte, se puede dar un distanciamiento cultural deliberado: sólo tiene sentido «separar mesa y cama» si se vive en un espacio común. Un rasgo muy característico de la cultura gitana del contraste consiste en eludir el conflicto por medio de la evasión, es decir, recurriendo a la movilidad. Otros rasgos culturales han sido estudiados por Judith Okely (1983) en su conocida obra Complejo de pureza. Se trata de características en apariencia un tanto arcaicas, a las que no pocos relacionan con la India. En la sociedad industrial occidental, en la que son muchos los que desconocen este «complejo», la separación de lo puro y de lo impuro se convierte en un recurso excelente para construir fronteras sociales. En el próximo oriente, por el contrario, donde está muy extendida en la sociedad mayoritaria una concepción igual o similar de la pureza, los gitanos pueden obtener beneficios para la propia cultura transgrediendo reiteradamente esos tabúes.
