Theatre today speaks for a new type of cultural manifoldness, for a broad range of new differences that are developing. Creolisation is the intermingling of two or several formerly discrete ...traditions or cultures; it is an interweaving of similar and different threads of various colours, deriving from myths shared throughout the Mediterranean basin. Within such an understanding of culture theatre needs to speak out not only against domination but also needs to highlight the importance of marginality, otherness, and local contexts. It should not be hemmed in by literary-minded applications. As Benjamin Lee writes, “we have reached a time when no values from any single cultural perspective can provide frameworks adequate to understanding the changes affecting all of us”, which entails the decolonisation of cultural practices. We must think globally and act locally, be aware of universal myths, while remaining aware of the local circumstances and myths that surround us. In other words, a fruitful dialectical relation can ensue. In Slovenia, scholars often complain that, aside from specialists, nobody is “internationally” interested in local myths or national topics. This is not true: what is necessary is to find an appropriate way to present local or national topics within an international and global setting.
The essay outlines two attempts to revolutionise the relationship between the periphery and the centre in Central and Eastern Europe. The first belongs to the historical avant-gardes of the 1920s and ...1930s. The second one belongs to the retro-avant-gardes at the turn of the century, which re-enacted some of the basic ideas of Constructivist and Futurist utopian questions. The retro-generations announced that they were the heirs of the artistic generation of the Constructivists and Zenitists, who wanted to promote Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade and Trieste as centres of new art to establish a new bridge between East and West.
Razprava oriše dva poskusa revolucioniranja razmerja med obrobjem in središčem v Srednji in Vzhodni Evropi. Prvi spada v čas zgodovinskih avantgard dvajsetih in tridesetih let 20. stoletja, drugi pa v retroavantgarde ob prehodu stoletij, ki so ponovno uprizarjale nekatere osnovne ideje konstruktivističnih in futurističnih utopičnih vprašanj. Retrogeneracije so oznanile, da so dediči umetniške generacije konstruktivistov in zenitistov, ki so želeli promovirati Ljubljano, Zagreb, Beograd in Trst kot središča nove umetnosti, vzpostaviti nov most med Vzhodom in Zahodom.

The essay deals with selected examples of deconstructions of the opposition between representation and presentation, characteristic of the post-mimetic, from the neo-avant-garde to the post ...millennium. It traces authors who, from the 1960s to the present day, have deconstructed the drama and stage and invented new forms of re-dramatization and postdramatic intermedia interplay. We will see to what extent authors such as Peter Handke in Offending the Audience, the Pupilia Ferkleverk group in Pupilia Papa and Pupilčki, Dušan Jovanović in Monument G and Play the Tumour in the Head, Milan Jesih in Limits and Bitter Fruits of Justice, Matjaž Zupančič in The Corridor, Dragan Živadinov in The Rites of Farewell, Oliver Frljić in Damned Be the Traitor of His Country, Simona Semenić in 1981, and Žiga Divjak and Katarina Morano in various projects, persistently create disturbances in the fictional textual cosmos. However, at the same time they establish a powerful process of re-dramatisation, intense plots and denouements in theatrical texts and play-performances. It is as if, at the same time as deconstructing the dramatic, they inject the dramatic and the dramatic into the post-dramatic process of performance and writing. The post-mimetic thus coexists with the pre-mimetic, the »stripping down« of the representation of drama leads to the establishment of fiction.

The essay focuses on selected examples of the deconstruction of the opposition between representation and presentation, characteristic of post-mimetic art from the neo-avantgarde to the ...post-millennium. It discusses the authors who have been deconstructing the concept of drama and inventing new forms of redramatisation and post-dramatic intermediality from the 1960s to the present day. Despite persistently creating disruptions in the fictional textual cosmos, particular authors – such as Peter Handke in Offending the Audience, the group Pupilija Ferkeverk in Pupilija, Papa Pupilo and the Pupilceks, Dušan Jovanović in Monument G and Play a Tumour in the Head and Air Pollution, Milan Jesih in Limits and The Bitter Fruits of Justice, Matjaž Zupančič in The Corridor and other plays, Dragan Živadinov and his team in Supremat and other farewell rituals, Oliver Frljić in Damned be the Traitor of His Homeland, Simona Semenić in 1981, and Žiga Divjak and Katarina Morano in various projects – establish a strong process of redramatisation in their theatrical texts and performances. It is as if, alongside the deconstruction of drama, they inject dramatic and theatrical elements into the post-dramatic process of staging and writing. Thus, post-mimetic art coexists with pre-mimetic art, as this “stripping down” of the representativity of drama led to the establishment of fiction.
