In the second half of the 20th century, the crisis of positivism led to the rise of new directions in the philosophy of science. In the same period many economists expressed an increasing ...dissatisfaction with the so far dominant economic paradigms. The aim of this paper is to point out the relation between the main trends in the philosophy of science and the debate on the nature and the method of economics. The paper will review the main thesis of logical empiricism, proposed by Hutchison as research guidelines in the field of economics, and the transition from verificationism to Popper's falsicationism. It will then examine how the empirical-deductive method of positivism was interpreted by Friedman and Samuelson, who many consider the main exponents of neo-classic economics. With Kuhn and Lakatos, the emphasis of the «new» philosophy of sciences shifts from what scientists «should do» to what they actually «do» in the research practice. Another important evolution occurs with the works of Feyerabend and Rorty and the emergence of «post-modernist» trends, which deny any a kind of epistemology and maintain that a theory is acceptable only inasmuch it is endorsed by the scientific community. The relation between these radical changes in the philosophy of sciences and the debate on the methods and status of economics is complex. Heterodoxes economic theories, wishing to address the crisis of mainstream economics and the «economists' uneasiness», do not imply a refusal of positivism, and «post-modernist» approach had a limited appeal among economists. The paper presents the contributions of McCloskey and Rosenberg, two economists who particularly developed the arguments against positivist epistemology applied to economics, but it observes that, if interesting, such ideas do not provide a solid enough basis to overcome neoclassical orthodoxy. The conclusions briefly examine a still evolving and promising research approach, the «critical realism» recently promoted by the «Cambridge Group», which links criticism to the empiricaldeductive method with the proposal of alternative economic theories.

External Economies occupied a very prominent position in the Development Economics of the after war decades and the related theories of "balanced growth" and of "big push" significantly influenced ...the industrialization policies in underdeveloped countries. In the following years the concept lost its prominence as the formalisation of externalities in a static framework resulted unsuitable to study their effects on investment decision. Furthermore the failure in many countries of large-scale industrialization advocated by the theorist of "big push" and the emphasis on export-led growth reduced the relevance of those theories. Some new trends in economic research and the outgoing critical assessment of the adjustment policies of the 1980s led to a revival of the externalities in the analysis of industrialization and development problems. One of the most promising contribution to a new approach to industrialisation in developing countries can be drawn from research on small firms clusters building on the concept of Marshall's industrial district. The mix of competition and co-operation, typical of the most developed clusters, supported by appropriate public policies, can be able to overcome the limits both of large-scale planned industrialization and of the undisputed faith in market competition.
This article describes the German debate concerning the "rehabilitation of practical philosophy," locates its origin in neo-Aristotelian thought, and formulates three neo-Aristotelian theses derived ...from the Aristotelian understanding of praxis. Neo-Aristotelianism is shown to be a response to the standard modern "scientific" understanding of practical knowledge, which paradoxically entailed a regression in the understanding of practical knowledge (and of the relation between theory and praxis), and which led to fundamental problems in the development of modern sciences of action.

By the procedure described in this paper, the conducted emissions (CE) of a switch-mode power supply (SMPS) were simulated with a good degree of accuracy in the frequency range up to tens of MHz. ...This paper illustrates the modeling approach and provides assessment of the model accuracy by comparing predictions versus measurements obtained in a real application involving a DC-DC converter. In the modeling process, all the parasitic parameters dominating the emission phenomenon have been identified and characterized. What makes this procedure efficient and effective is the possibility to investigate the conducted emission phenomenon while the board is designed, when most of the viable solutions can be implemented, thus saving time and resources.
This article compares the discussion on the overcoming of metaphysics in Heidegger, Carnap, and Wittgenstein. The goal is to determine if we really live in a post-metaphysical world, and to show that ...metaphysics cannot ignore practical philosophy.
