In the 17-year-old olive grove located in the town of Grabovci in the Šibenik hinterland, the flowering phenophases were observed in May and June 2023. Flowering phenoases monitored on 13 olive varieties (‘Buža’, ‘Ascolana Tenera’, ‘Drobnica’, ‘Oblica’, ‘Picholine Marocaine’, ‘Gemlik’, ‘Istarska bjelica’, ‘Krvavica’, ‘Coratina’, ‘Rosulja’ ‘Leccino’, ‘Pendolino’ and ‘Frantoio’) according to the BBCH scale. It was found that the different varieties in the same area under the same environmental conditions had different flowering onset and duration, which can be explained by the varietal characteristics. The climatic conditions for the duration of flowering in 2023 in the area were optimal for the flowering of the observed varieties.
Tourism represents an important determinant of global recognition and regional growth and development of the Republic of Croatia, especially the coastal part of the country. However, there is no ...doubt that any tourism activity has strong economic, socio-cultural, social, and environmental effects. Mass tourism brings numerous advantages. However, the growing concentration of tourists also leads to negative effects, of which residents are the most affected. Šibenik is a tourist town whose development is primarily based on tourism, and this destination, due to its centuries-old history and geographic location, is attractive to tourists. This paper aims to investigate the extent to which tourism affects the quality of life of the local population based on a preliminary survey of a sample of residents of the city of Šibenik. This paper aims to investigate in detail the practical aspects of tourism. The respondents’ perceptions and tourism’s real, tangible, and measurable effects will be analyzed to draw valuable conclusions. This approach enables a deeper understanding of the impact of tourism on various aspects of society and the environment.
This paper demonstrates the possibilities of GIS implementation in the preventive phase of firefighting activities for the Šibenik-Knin County. Multicriteria GIS analysis (GIS-MCDA) was applied in ...derivation of the wildfire risk ignition index. Four groups of criteria were used: vegetation, geomorphometry, anthropogenic impact, and climate elements. Wildfire risk ignition models were derived based on the decision-maker method through (1) the experience of the local fire commander and (2) following the examples of good practice. Furthermore, the coverage and the passability of the National park (NP) Krka roads were analyzed in relation to the standard intervention time from the competent fire brigades. The nearest fire brigades and the fastest routes to the most endangered zones within the NP Krka have been derived. The results indicate that the area of Šibenik-Knin County belongs to the moderate/moderately high risk of fire ignition and that the coverage of the NP Krka roads within the standard intervention time is not satisfactory.

Cycling or Cyclo tourism is one of the growing forms of tourist activities. The main motive to travel for cyclists is active or passive participation in cycling, and additional motives that affect ...demand are participation in competitive cycling and observation of cycling events. Bicycle tours are becoming increasingly popular in European countries and the economic contribution of cycling tourists has ensured that cycling tourism has a significant place in tourism revenue. Tourists on bicycles can be an ideal tourist market for rural and peripheral areas that often lack a large offer of tourist infrastructure. Cycling tourism offers special opportunities for rural areas where this form of tourism can create and/or retain jobs and enrich the tourist offer. Attractive and diverse natural environment, rich cultural and historical heritage, favorable climate, proximity to large markets, good transport links, poorly used macadam roads, and forest roads unburdened by hiking and mountaineering demand, provide the Republic of Croatia and the County of Šibenik-Knin with many advantages for the development of this form of tourism.
Reforestation has been one of the main forestry activities in the karst terrain of Dalmatia, Croatia, for more than a century. This paper examines the history behind reforestation schemes in ...Dalmatia, a kingdom at the periphery of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It explores how the ideas of Austrian foresters, based at the centre of Empire, were transmitted and put into practice. Late nineteenth-century forestry debates in contemporary forestry texts and the Šumarski list, the forestry journal published since 1877, are analysed and different narratives concerning the lack of woodland explored. The paper goes on to examine how reforestation of the karst was carried out in the region around Šibenik making use of local archives, historical maps, cadastral surveys, and photographs. Disputes between foresters and local villagers who wished to protect their grazing rights are uncovered and a link between the development of tourism and the selection of sites to be reforested is identified.
City logistics has the goal of optimizing the entire logistics system within the city area and thus positively impact the quality of life. Different measures and initiatives, aimed at the ...optimisation of city logistics and reduction of the negative effects of urban freight transport are access zones or goods (freight) receiving points in the city centre, restrictions of vehicle dimensions, time schedule of delivery, consolidation strategies, use of urban distribution or consolidation centres, use of electric cars, use of urban public transport and mobility management. In the last couple of years, the city of Šibenik has experienced a tourism boom, which includes the organisation of numerous festivals in the old town core, an increase in the number of visitors, an increase in the number of catering and shopping facilities, private accommodation units, hotels and hostels. The increased number of tourists and commercial establishments also broaches the question of delivery of food and non-food products into the old part of the city, especially during the tourist season.
Starting from the insufficient scholarly research of enslavement and slavery in Šibenik and its district during the Renaissance and the early modern period, which coincided with intense Ottoman incursions, this article analyses and presents two historical sources from the first half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. These sources offer first-hand testimonies regarding the fate of individuals who were enslaved and taken from the border areas to the Ottoman Empire, specifically from the Šibenik Hinterland and Hungary. The first document (National University Library, Zagreb, Collection of Manuscripts and Old Books, shelf mark: R-3931/4, Šibenik. Documenta ad illustrandam historiam civitatis Sibenicensis) focuses on a group of Christian slaves (Morlacs) from Šibenik and the part of its district under Ottoman administration, who were forcefully taken to Naples, probably in the first half of the 16th century, where they were considered Turks. The second source (Šibenik Diocesan Archive, Šibenik, 18/1: Šibenik Diocese, Diocesan Curia, vol. 48, Liber diuersorum) presents the testimony of the Šibenik Chapter concerning the redemption of Šibenik’s nobleman Iohannes Baptista Zavoreus, the son of Šibenik’s humanist and historian Dominicus Zavoreus (ca. 1540-1608), from Turkish captivity in 1606. He had been captured while involved in the Hungarian military forces defending Esztergom against Ottoman attacks in 1605. Both sources are contextualized within the historical circumstances of their creation and then examined in the broader scholarly knowledge of enslavement in the Adriatic and Hungary during the Renaissance and early modern period. The research aims to determine the extent to which the fate of slaves and captives from the Šibenik area aligns with the general treatment of slaves and prisoners during that time. The findings confirm the hypothesis put forth by N. Budak that individuals from all social classes were at risk of being captured and that despite legal prohibitions in the Eastern Adriatic communes, including Šibenik, enslavement remained a widespread activity aimed at profiting from the sale or purchase of enslaved individuals. The document from the Šibenik Diocesan Archive about the redemption of Iohannes Baptista Zavoreus from Turkish captivity also reveals previously unknown facts about his life, contributing to a better understanding of the history of the Šibenik noble family Zavoreus and their involvement in anti-Turkish wars.
