Standing adjacent to one of Sri Lanka's historical western ports, the fortunes of the Munnesvaram temples have waxed and waned through the years of turbulence, violence and social change that have been the country's lot since the advent of European colonialism in the Indian Ocean. Bastin recounts the story of these temples and analyses how the Hindu temple is reproduced as a center of worship amidst conflict and competition.

Automatic text extraction from number plates is used in most of the countries in present. In this paper a semiautomatic text extraction from Sri Lankan vehicle number plates is presented. There are ...several number plate types currently available in Sri Lanka. First a set of template was created based on the font used in the number plates for all the English letters and numbers. Number plate first corrected as can be seen from a camera situated in front of the camera. Then the area of the numbers is extracted. Texts and numbers are then separated in to separate images. Finally separated texts and numbers are matched with the original template created using template matching. A data set consisted of 93 number plates is used to demonstrate the usability of the proposed method.
This study explores the life style factors of Bottom of Pyramid (BOP) People in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka in order to uplift their livelihood and to empower their vocations using a ...Ubiquitous Learning Framework (ULF). A cross sectional study was carried out in Yaya 02 village in Mihintale divisional secretariat's area of Anuradhapura district. The primary data was collected using an interviewer administered questionnaire. The study facilitated to identify the life style factors related to their vocations, educational and psychological background, nature of vocations and technology usage. According to the findings the mobile phone usage among the selected population was considerably high. Learning requirements of individuals and preferred learning mood was differed from person to person. These factors are main parameters to be looked at in designing ULF. This study will provide an insight into the research that will form the path for ULF.
This paper presents authors experience about a completely online B. Sc. Degree program conducted in Sri Lanka at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL). This degree program is offered in two main ...streams as Physical sciences and Bio sciences. Both degrees are three years in duration. Focus for this paper is two modules offered in the second year as a common module for both streams. Modules were conducted during February to May in 2013. Since the complete online nature of the program most of the students joined are employed. Moodle server is used to host all the course materials and assignments. Regular online discussion were carried out in order to answer students questions and to clarify unclear points. Students joined the discussion online from their homes mostly from all over the country. Twelve students were followed these modules and students who did not sit for the final exams were excluded from the statistical calculations.
The purpose of this paper is to document and analyze the immediate economic impact of the Indian Ocean tsunami generated by the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 26 December 2004 and the disaster ...management process in the immediate aftermath of the disaster with a focus on the two worst affected countries – Indonesia (Aceh province) and Sri Lanka. The 26 December Tsunami is unique among large disasters in recorded human history, not only because of the sheer number of causalities and massive displacement of people, but also because of the unprecedented international donor response and the logistic challenges faced by international organizations and aid agencies in organizing and coordinating relief efforts. Our preliminary findings points to the importance of educating the public about simple precautions in the event of a disaster and enforcement of coastal environmental regulations as disaster prevention policies. The findings also makes a strong case for designing policies and programs, as an integral part of national development strategy, for mitigating the impact of natural disasters on the poor and highlights the need for combining international aid commitments with innovative approaches to redressing problems of limited aid absorptive capacity in disaster affected countries.
The study is based on an extensive survey carried out in the Indian cities of Chennai, Trichy, Thiruvananthapuram, Tuticorin, Mumbai and Rameshwaram. Informal trade between India and Sri Lanka is ...largely a one way trade from India to Sri Lanka and is almost a third of the total value of trade through formal channels. Informal traders have developed efficient mechanisms for information flows, risk sharing and risk mitigation. The transaction costs of trading in the informal channels are significantly lower than in the formal channel. Ethnic trading networks between trading partners continue to facilitate informal trade by reducing transaction costs through minimization of risk costs, market information and search costs. An important policy implication of the study is that improving the transacting environment of formal traders would lead to lower informal trade but such trade would be difficult to eliminate. The apparent objectives of the govemment intervention measures in the coconut industry are identified and ranked. The inadequacy of data prevents estimation of basic coefficients required for the ...analysis. The partial equilibrium‑analysis based on “a prior' expectations shows that the opportunities available to improve the tenns of trade in desiccated coconut and edible copra exports justify government intervention in these two products in the foriu of export duties. There may also be some justification for expanding extension services and public investment on coconut researeh, which enables to realise the production objective of government. The implications of the study crucially depend on the assumptions and the partial equilibrium technique used.
