This paper focuses on Caspar von Zumbusch, who was one of the leading sculptors of the second half of the 19th century in Vienna. At the initiative of the art historian Rudolf Eitelberger, the German ...sculptor was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts (Akademie der bildenden Künste) in Vienna in 1873 and became the founder of the so-called Vienna school of monumental sculpture. By means of a statistical analysis of the matriculation books that serve as reliable documentation of the students enrolled in the Academy, the number and origin of Zumbusch’s students can be determined for the first time. The results show that Zumbusch taught numerous students from all over the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which made the Vienna Academy the preeminent centre for sculptors in the Dual Monarchy. Once the students had graduated, Zumbusch recommended them for projects and thereby established a large network of sculptors across the Austro-Hungarian Empire towards the end of the 19th century.
In Seward's Law
, Peter Charles Hoffer argues that William H. Seward's
legal practice in Auburn, New York, informed his theory of
relational rights-a theory that demonstrated how the country could
...end slavery and establish a practical form of justice.
This theory, Hoffer demonstrates, had ties to Seward's career as a
country lawyer. Despite his rise to prominence, and indeed
preeminence, as a US secretary of state, Seward's country-lawyer
mentality endured throughout his life, as evinced in his personal
attitudes and professional conduct. Relational rights, identified
and termed here for the first time by Hoffer, are communal and
reciprocal, what everyone owed to every other member of their
community. Such rights are at the center of a jurisprudential
outlook that arises directly from living in a village. Though
Seward was limited by the Victorian mores and the racialist
presumptions of his day, the concept of relational rights that
animated him was the natural antithesis to the theories and
practices of slavery. In the legal regime underpinning the
institution, masters owed nothing to their bondmen and women, while
those enslaved unconditionally owed life and labor to their
masters. The irrepressible conflict was, for Seward,
jurisprudential as well as moral and political. Hoffer's leading
assumption in Seward's Law is that a lifetime spent as a
lawyer influences how a person responds to everyday challenges.
Seward remained a country lawyer at heart, and that fact defined
the course of his political career.
The 1872 Hamada earthquake occurred just after the Meiji revolution and caused damage in present Shimane Prefecture, the western part of Honshu faced to the Japan Sea. At that time modern seismology ...was not started yet and the first scientific paper on this earthquake was appeared after 12 years and detailed field investigations were done 40 years later. In this paper, we carried out literature surveys on this event and traced the process of the establishment of the total damage features and distributions. The effect of snow was also discussed because of her snowy location and occurrence season.
This paper describes that Iwami-Tatamigaura was uplifted during the 1872 Hamada earthquake based on the analysis of the height and ages of emerged sessile assemblage, and topographic data. In two sea ...caves located in the northern part of the survey area, we observed the emerged sessile assemblage, which consists mainly of calcareous tubeworm, Pomatoleios kraussii, and collected samples for 14C dating and measured their altitude referring against the Tokyo Peil (T.P.). Two levels of assemblage distributed at 1.29 to 1.78 m (T.P.) in the upper and 0.90 to 1.28 m (T.P.) in the lower can be recognized in the East Cave. Analyzing the calibrated 14C age data of the lower assemblage, their height relative to the vertical living range of the present assemblage, and adjacent tide gauge data, it is inferred that the northern part of Iwami-Tatamigaura has 0.8-1.1 m uplifted during the 1872 Hamada earthquake. Assuming a 0.8 m coseismic uplift in the whole of survey area, most of the central and the southern parts of wave-cut-bench would be submerged below the low tide before the earthquake, based on the height distribution represented by Digital Surface Model created from the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle survey. This result shows a discrepancy with the fact that the most part of the wave-cut-bench had already emerged in the historical picture “Tokonoura-Ezu” painted in 1817. To explain the landscape of the picture, the amount of coseismic uplift in the central and the southern part must be 0.3-0.4 m or less. These data suggest that the regional difference in the amount of uplift occurred between the northern part and the central to southern part. Because no recent surface rupture can be identified between the two areas, such crustal deformation was probably caused by tilting movements toward the south or the southwest. We also propose the other emergence event before the 1872 Hamada earthquake from the upper assemblage in the East Cave. Calibrated 14C age data and height of them suggest a relative sea-level fall of at least 0.4 m around the 14th century or later. This result seems that coseismic uplift event has occurred with an interval of about 500 years, but there are the other several candidates for the cause of this phenomenon, such as intermittent small uplifts with short intervals, aseismic uplift, and eustatic sea-level fall.

This book takes its title from the catchphrase of the eponymous hero of the 1825 play Paul Pry, which was an immense success on the London stage and subsequently around the English-speaking world. It ...tackles the complex, multifaceted subject of privacy in nineteenth-century Britain by examining the debates that the trope of Paul Pry illuminated. The book presents a history of privacy conducted through a biography of a polymorphous fictional character embodied in myriad forms. The book uses a new kind of social history, using dense archival research to trace a cultural artefact through every aspect of its consumer context, and deploying its meanings to interrogate the largely hidden history of privacy in a period of major transformations in the role of the home, mass communication, and the state. The book presents an account of a recreational event in an era which saw a decisive shift from an articulated to a segmented market. In the examination of the discourses of privacy which Paul Pry brought into focus, the book casts light on the tensions between curiosity and intrusion which are captured by the play’s catchphrase.

Although he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the first shots were fired at Gettysburg, Union general George G. Meade guided his forces to victory in the Civil War's most ...pivotal battle. Commentators often dismiss Meade when discussing the great leaders of the Civil War. But in this long-anticipated book, Kent Masterson Brown draws on an expansive archive to reappraise Meade's leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg. Using Meade's published and unpublished papers alongside diaries, letters, and memoirs of fellow officers and enlisted men, Brown highlights how Meade's rapid advance of the army to Gettysburg on July 1, his tactical control and coordination of the army in the desperate fighting on July 2, and his determination to hold his positions on July 3 insured victory. Brown argues that supply deficiencies, brought about by the army's unexpected need to advance to Gettysburg, were crippling. In spite of that, Meade pursued Lee's retreating army rapidly, and his decision not to blindly attack Lee's formidable defenses near Williamsport on July 13 was entirely correct in spite of subsequent harsh criticism. Combining compelling narrative with incisive analysis, this finely rendered work of military history deepens our understanding of the Army of the Potomac as well as the machinations of the Gettysburg Campaign, restoring Meade to his rightful place in the Gettysburg narrative.
