Beard spent most of his later life fighting to reclaim his homeland and acting as "old Dewey Beard," a living relic of the "old West" for the tourists.
Winifred Sanford is generally regarded by critics as one of the best and most important early twentieth-century Texas women writers, despite publishing only a handful of short stories before slipping ...into relative obscurity. First championed by her mentor, H. L. Mencken, and published in his magazine, The American Mercury, many of Sanford’s stories were set during the Texas oil boom of the 1920s and 1930s and offer a unique perspective on life in the boomtowns during that period. Four of her stories were listed in The Best American Short Stories of 1926. Questioning the sudden end to Sanford’s writing career, Wiesepape, a leading literary historian of Texas women writers, delved into the author’s previously unexamined private papers and emerged with an insightful and revealing study that sheds light on both Sanford’s abbreviated career and the domestic lives of women at the time. The first in-depth account of Sanford’s life and work, Wiesepape’s biography discusses Sanford’s fiction through the sociohistorical contexts that shaped and inspired it. In addition, Wiesepape has included two previously unpublished stories as well as eighteen previously unpublished letters to Sanford from Mencken. Winifred Sanford is an illuminating biography of one of the state’s unsung literary jewels and an important and much-needed addition to the often overlooked field of Texas women’s writing.

Além disto, analisamos os argumentos utilizados pelos espíritas solicitando a retirada da criminalização do Espiritismo sob a lei. Pereira possuía uma visão fortemente negativa do Espiritismo, recorrente à época, comparando-o à fraude, charlatanismo, crime, loucura e atraso intelectual, sendo um dever criminalizá-lo. Os espíritas que tentaram desconstruir esta visão não obtiveram êxito e o Espiritismo permaneceu incluído na lei.
This paper reexamines the debated issue of the effects of rent control policy on the rental market. We investigate the impact on rents of three different forms of rent regulation in Lyon over a ...78‐year period. We use an original historical data set which allows us to track regulation changes, rent paid, and tenant moves for a long‐run panel of flats. Using a difference‐in‐differences method, we estimate the impact of regulation on rents depending on the type of rent control over different economic periods. Our results show that the impact of rent control deepened over time. Starting with an 11% reduction in rents between 1914 and 1929, it reached a decrease by 47% in the regulated rental market in the 1949–1968 period. We do not find any increase in rents in the unregulated segment of the rental market, which could be a result of a reduction in housing investment in the long run.
RESUMO Este artigo explora a relação entre espaço doméstico, tecnologias e as políticas higienistas na cidade de São Paulo, entre o final do século XIX e as primeiras décadas do século XX. Com base ...no levantamento dos pedidos para novas construções habitacionais do período, observa-se a rápida transformação da moradia segundo preceitos de salubridade e limpeza, com destaque para a constituição de um novo ambiente no programa residencial: o banheiro. Partindo dessa constatação, o artigo é dividido em duas partes: na primeira, discute-se como as políticas sanitaristas tornam obrigatória a presença de um cômodo sanitário nas moradias paulistanas por meio da implantação dos serviços de fornecimento de água e esgoto para domicílios, apoiada pela legislação e fiscalização; na segunda parte, o trabalho examina a apropriação social desse novo espaço, assim como de seus equipamentos, revelando que a consolidação do banheiro deve ser compreendida também à luz das mudanças das práticas corporais ligadas às ideias de higiene, limpeza e conforto em discussão na época.
ABSTRACT This paper explores the relationship between the domestic space, technologies and hygienist policies in the city of São Paulo, between the late 19th century and early 20th century. In analyzing the requests for new housing constructions in the period, we observe a rapid transformation of housing according to salubrity and cleanliness precepts, particularly the creation of a new environment in the residential program: the bathroom. Based on this observation, the article is divided into two parts: the first discusses how sanitary policies made the presence of a sanitary room mandatory in São Paulo’s houses by implementing water and sewage services for households, supported by legislation and inspection. The second examines the social appropriation of this new space, as well as of its equipment, revealing that the consolidation of the bathroom should be understood in light of changes in bodily practices linked to the ideas of hygiene, cleanliness and comfort under discussion at the time.
Art after Philosophy: Boris Pasternak's Early Prose, by
Elena Glazov-Corrigan, redefines an area in Slavic studies which
has suffered from neglect for several decades, namely, Pasternak's
early prose ...narratives. In her bold new study, Glazov-Corrigan
analyzes the conceptual networks of thought Pasternak developed
when he turned to literature after abandoning the study of
Neo-Kantianism in Marburg during the summer of 1912. This book
shows conclusively that Pasternak's knowledge of philosophy is
inseparable from his prose works, even though in his early stories
and novellas (1913-1918) philosophical ideas operate neither as
discrete textual units nor as micro-elements or clusters of
possible signification. In the early Pasternak, philosophy becomes
a narrative art, a large-scale narrative frame, a manner of seeing
rather than of constructing reality. After Roman Jakobson's famous
1935 essay, which characterized the early Pasternak as a "virtuoso
of metonymy," in contrast to the metaphoric Mayakovsky, no other
approach has been able to generate comparable scholarly influence.
The present study takes up the implicit challenge of this critical
impasse. Entering into a debate with Jakobson's findings, Art
after Philosophy illuminates Pasternak's boldest artistic
experiments and suggests to his readers entirely new ways of
approaching not only his early but also his later writing.
Two rare documents associated with the Indian Museum and the Indian Marine Survey for the administrative year April 1890 to March 1891 have been examined and found to have nomenclatural consequences ...for malacostracan crustaceans. Even though they constitute available published works according to the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature, these reports have rarely been cited. Dating these two publications is of importance as they make decapod scientific names available and, in a few instances, describe the same taxa. After searching the collections deposited in the Asian and African Room, British Library, the Administration Report of the Indian Marine for the year April 1890 to March 1891 could be dated with some degree of certainty as 25 August 1891. In contrast, dating the Indian Museum Annual Report proved more difficult because after examination of copies held by the General Library in the Natural History Museum, London, it was evident that not all of these reports were consistently published on time to meet an end of year deadline. However, the publication of volume XXII of the Indian Museum Annual Report for the year April 1890 to March 1891 appeared to be contemporary with the year printed at the bottom of the title page. As no exact date could be established with confidence, the publication date for this volume was fixed as 31 December 1891 in accordance with ICZN Art. 21.3.2. Therefore the Administration Report of the Indian Marine (published 25 August 1891) is considered to take precedence over the Indian Museum Annual Report (published 31 December 1891) and as such the names made available in the former take priority. As original copies of the Administration Report of the Indian Marine are not readily available in most libraries and few scientists have actually had access to these publications, the relevant Appendix No. XIII, in which the names of several malacostracan taxa are made available, is reproduced here. Since the appendix is not conclusively attributable to a specific author, it is considered to be written anonymously and should therefore be cited as Anonymous (1891). A number of names in Appendix No. XIII are available since they are accompanied by a brief description of the taxa they denote, and are either attributable to James Wood-Mason or remain with anonymous authorship; others are nomina nuda without a diagnosis or indication, or have been diagnosed previously in the "Natural History Notes from H.M. Indian Marine Survey Steamer Investigator". The nomenclatural implications for eight names made available in Anonymous (1891) are discussed: Glyphocrangon caeca, Glyphocrangon sculptus var. coecescens, Psalidopodidae, Psalidopus, Psalidopus mirabilis, Psathyrocaris, Psathyrocaris fragilis and Psopheticus crepitans. The nomenclatural history of various other taxa, initially denoted by unavailable names in Anonymous (1891), is also documented. The authorships of the various crustacean taxa collected by the Indian Marine Survey Steamer Investigator during the seasons 1889-1890 and 1890-1891, and published in two series of connected parts in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, are also re-assessed and summarised. A rare document containing the list of R.I.M.S. Investigator stations for the period 1884-1913 is reproduced for the future benefit of the scientific community.
