We examine the role of rainfall trends in poor growth performance of sub-Saharan African nations relative to other developing countries, using a new cross-country panel climatic data set in an ...empirical economic growth framework. Our results show that rainfall has been a significant determinant of poor economic growth for African nations but not for other countries. Depending on the benchmark measure of potential rainfall, we estimate that the direct impact under the scenario of no decline in rainfall would have resulted in a reduction of between around 15% and 40% of today's gap in African GDP per capita relative to the rest of the developing world.

This research examines the climatic origins of the diffusion of Neolithic agriculture across countries and archaeological sites. The theory suggests that a foraging society's history of climatic ...shocks shaped the timing of its adoption of farming. Specifically, as long as climatic disturbances did not lead to a collapse of the underlying resource base, the rate at which hunter-gatherers were climatically propelled to experiment with their habitats determined the accumulation of tacit knowledge complementary to farming. Consistent with the proposed hypothesis, the empirical investigation demonstrates that, conditional on biogeographic endowments, climatic volatility has a hump-shaped effect on the timing of the adoption of agriculture.
This book reveals the value and significance of pirate radio, with a special focus on local radio stations that broadcast illegally in Poland in the early 90s. It shows that many of them, like in ...other countries from the region, began as non-commercial, community-oriented initiatives. Several sources of information were used to maximize the potential of the study, especially documents gathered from public institutions, press articles, interviews with radio representatives, and decision-makers who influenced the shape of the broadcasting system. The analysis of these sources supports the conclusion that, although the pirates left a lasting legacy, they lost out in the licensed regime driven by market logic.

Dokonuje gruntownej analizy źródeł dotyczących pogromu białostockiego, a jednocześnie - na przykładzie Białegostoku - prezentuje zjawiska i pojęcia ogólne, takie jak społeczne uwarunkowania pogromu, jego reperkusje polityczne i psychologiczne oraz waga relacji personalnych w czasie tych tragicznych wydarzeń. Wskazuje na aktywną rolę wspólnoty żydowskiej w czasie pogromu oraz na interakcyjność samego zjawiska antyżydowskiej przemocy zbiorowej.
Historie pogromów Żydów wciąż wzbudzają gorące dyskusje. Wbrew pozorom stan wiedzy o tych tragicznych wydarzeniach, bez względu na okres, w jakim miały miejsce, jest nadal niewystarczający. Społeczną wyobraźnię wypełniają obrazy antyżydowskiej przemocy, które często mają się nijak do wniosków wypływających ze źródeł historycznych. Autor ukazuje, jak doszło do wykształcenia się dominującego w świadomości społecznej schematu opisu pogromu Żydów. Odkrywa przed czytelnikami kolejne etapy procesu, który doprowadził do utrwalenia się legendy o tym, że pogromy były organizowane i przeprowadzane przez czynniki w pewien sposób ,,zewnętrzne" wobec lokalnych wspólnot (przez władze, okupantów itp.). Wyjaśnia, kiedy i z jakich powodów społeczności te oczyszczano z podejrzeń o udział w atakach.
Pogrom Żydów w Białymstoku w 1906 roku, przedstawiony w publikacji na podstawie nowych materiałów źródłowych, odegrał w budowaniu tych wyobrażeń znaczącą rolę. Historie napisane po tym tragicznym zdarzeniu posłużyły jako schemat z powodzeniem wykorzystywany do opisu innych pogromów, także tych, do których doszło w czasie drugiej wojny światowej i tuż po niej.

Anti-Jewish Violence and Social Imagery: The Bialystok Pogrom of 1906
A book about the history of the Białystok pogrom in 1906, and simultaneously an important voice in the field of the theory and methodology of research on pogroms. The author critically evaluates previous research in terms of accepted research paradigms. He thoroughly analyzes sources concerning the Bialystok pogrom, and at the same time, using the example of Bialystok, he shows the general phenomena and vocabulary, including: the city as a pogrom space, pogrom as social interaction, pogrom as conspiracy and revenge, pogrom as a political conflict and finally the effects of pogrom - building a new order. He also presents a discussion about the definition of 'pogrom'.

William Kuby examines the experiences of couples in ...unconventional unions and the legal and cultural backlash generated by a wide array of 'alternative' marriages. These include marriages established through personal advertisements and matchmaking bureaus, marriages that defied state eugenic regulations, hasty marriages between divorced persons, provisional and temporary unions referred to as 'trial marriages', racial intermarriages, and a host of other unions that challenged sexual and marital norms. In illuminating the tensions between those who set marriage policies and those who defied them, Kuby offers a fresh account of marriage's contested history, arguing that although marital nonconformists composed only a small minority of the population, their atypical arrangements nonetheless shifted popular understandings of marriage and consistently refashioned the legal parameters of the institution.
