Although Van Dijk and Kintsch's model of text comprehension has been shown to be an effective theory for describing many findings with academic implications, their model has far reaching potential ...beyond the classroom - perhaps into the courtroom. At the end of a criminal trial, jurors are provided with a set of instructions regarding how they should apply relevant law to the present case. Unfortunately, most current juror instructions are very difficult to comprehend. Though linguistically based simplifications of these instructions have improved comprehension for jury-eligible adults, comprehension remains quite poor resulting in jurors basing decisions on stereotypes and biases rather than the law. The present essay reviews some of the research that has been conducted on improving juror comprehension, the effectiveness of some of these attempts, and makes an argument for utilizing Van Dijk and Kintsch's situation model as a vehicle for additional improvement in juror instructions and hence juror comprehension.

The Work of Terrence Malick: Time-Based Ecocinema develops a timely ecocinema approach to film analysis illuminated by Benjamin's notion of the turn of time. Current work on Malick's films emphasizes ...the spatial dynamics of his cinema, particularly as it pertains, from within a phenomenological framework, to the viewer's experience of films. This book redirects scholarly attention to the way Malick's directorial work shapes time and duration, laying new groundwork for the analysis of how films unsettle nature-culture binaries in modernity. The study performs this intervention through a rigorous engagement with Walter Benjamin's work on time, violence and technologies and the emergent figural approach to aesthetics in film studies. Each of these methods has important precedents in film studies and other fields. The combination of methods performed in this book contributes to understanding the relevance of a time-based approach to Malick's films and the practical implications of a time-based relation to history in contemporary ecocinema discourses.
This book provides a critical analysis of the liberal ideas of the decline of the state through a historical comparison. It takes special note of the implications of state failure to control economic ...growth and market exigencies for international relations. The book is divided into three sections. The first analyzes Cobden, Mitrany, and Ohmae's empirical claims, the second looks at their normative judgements and the third looks at their predictive assertions. It concludes that the three primarily propose normative arguments for less state involvement in economic and international relations but conceal them in empirical and predictive assertions. The liberal idea of the decline of the state is more of an ideological statement in response to political, social, and economic trends than an objective observation of an empirically verifiable fact.

This book comprises interviews with some of the last surviving veterans of the Jewish Fighting Organization in the Warsaw ghetto, accompanied by never previously published photographic postcards from ...a number of ghettoes, and a reconstruction of the only surviving contemporary list of those soldiers that strives to salvage vestiges of their stories from oblivion. The first part of the book, Still Circling, is a collection of interviews with the last surviving soldiers of the Jewish Fighting Organization (OB), which fought in the Warsaw ghetto uprising. The section opens with an interview recorded in 1985 with Marek Edelman, by then the only commander of the OB still alive, and ends with another conversation with him recorded in 2000. The other interviewees included are also OB veteransrank-and-file soldiers, men and women. These veterans relate the stories of their homes and their backgroundssome were Bundists, others from Zionist or religious familiesfollowed by their recollections of how they experienced and remembered the uprising, which provides several unique perspectives of shared episodes. Images include portraits of Grupiskas interlocutors as well as never before published photographs of the ghetto and its surroundings that are reminiscent of postcards. The second part of the book, Rereading the List, is intended to function like a litany of the names of the OB members who fought in the Warsaw ghetto uprising. This list was compiled by fighters in 1943 and discovered by the author in 2000. Each name is accompanied by a short story about the fightersometimes only a sentence or twoas well as any available photograph of the soldier. The list is followed by a reconstruction of the OB army, which captures its divisions and the places they fought.

Critical Discourse Analysis (or Critical Discourse Studies – CDA/CDS) examines the relationship between texts, discourses and power, dominance, power abuses and social inequalities. Critical ...discourse analysis is a multidisciplinary research perspective, which not only examines the interactions between the text, the micro level and its surroundings, the macro level, but its main goal is to uncover social inequalities, expose the forms and modalities of abuse of power. The representatives of CDA are committed to social equality and justice. Present paper presents the work of one of the outstanding representatives of Critical Discourse Analysis, Teun A. Van Dijk, by presenting the history and possibilities of CDA, and also the key elements of Van Dijk’s approach. This study aims to show how knowledge, power and discourse are connected in Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis.
Jelen tanulmány a kritikai diskurzuselemzés egyik kiemelkedő képviselőjének, Teun A. Van Dijknak a munkásságát mutatja be, érintve a kritikai diskurzuselemzés gyökereit, felhasználási lehetőségeit, bemutatva Teun A. Van Dijk megközelítésének kulcsfogalmait. A tanulmány célja megmutatni, hogyan köti össze a tudást, a hatalmat és a diskurzusokat Van Dijk, különös figyelmet fordítva a Van Dijk-féle társadalmi tudat bemutatására.
