The first monograph devoted to him, this philosophical commentary employs the resources of analytic aesthetics. Art historians trace the development of art, explaining how what came earlier yields to what comes later. Taking for granted that the artifacts they describe are artworks, art historians place them within the history of art. Philosophical art writers define art, explain why it has a history and identify its meaning. Playwright, journalist, and spectacularly successful governor, Carlos Lacerda was Brazil's foremost orator in the 20th century and its most controversial politician. Lacerda's spirited oratory helped him become Brazil's most popular congressman, but it scared the rulers of Brazil and they prohibited the broadcast of his speeches after he returned from exile in 1956. Their effort to deprive him of his mandate stirred the entire nation and culminated in one of the most dramatic sessions ever held in the Chamber of Deputies. Dulles, who knew Lacerda well and had access to his papers, sheds light on Lacerda the man, ardent in courtship and in all his undertakings, intellectually restless, and scornful of routine and mediocrity. El mediometraje dialoga también con Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005) y retoma la historia de amor de los vaqueros protagonistas, que se reencuentran tras veinticinco años de no verse y vuelven a plantearse la posibilidad de vivir juntos compartiendo un rancho. A partir de estas dos premisas, este artículo describe cómo Almodóvar actualiza las convenciones de espacio y género del wéstern, y cómo recrea el deseo homoerótico que Ang Lee puso en escena.
