This paper begins with a discussion of the
scientia sexualis/
ars erotica distinction, which Foucault first advances in
History of Sexuality Vol. 1, and which has been employed by many scholars to do ...a variety of analytical work. Though Foucault has expressed his doubts regarding his conceptualization of the differences between Western and Eastern discourses of desire, he never entirely disowns the distinction. In fact, Foucault remains convinced that China must have an
ars erotica. I will explore Foucault’s sources of authority. To this end, I introduce the work of famous Dutch sinologist Robert Hans van Gulik, who published the tremendously influential
Sexual Life in Ancient China in 1961, and also explore Joseph Needham’s view on Chinese sex. I argue that, Foucault, in his fierce polemic against the “Repressive Hypothesis”, himself imagined a utopian Other where pleasure and desire were organised differently. I end on a discuss on Orientalism and the project of “Sinography” of comparative literature scholars Haun Saussy, Eric Hayot and others.
This collection of essays presents a sampling of film and television texts interrogating images of U.S. masculinity. Rather than using "postfeminist" as a definition of contemporary feminism, this ...collection uses the term to designate the period from the late 1980s on--as a point when feminist thought gradually became more mainstream. The movies and TV series examined here have achieved a level of sustained attention, from critical acclaim, to mass appeal, to cult status. Instead of beginning with a set hypothesis on the effect of the feminist movement on images of masculinity on film and television, these chapters represent a range of responses that demonstrate how the conversations within these texts about American masculinity are often open-ended, allowing both male characters and male viewers a wider range of options. Defining the relationship between U.S. masculinity and American feminist movements of the twentieth century is a complex undertaking. The essays collected for this volume engage prominent film and television texts that directly interrogate images of U.S. masculinity that have appeared since second-wave feminism. The contributors have chosen textual examples whose protagonists actively struggle with the conflicting messages about masculinity. These protagonists are more often works in progress, acknowledging the limits of their negotiations and self-actualization. These chapters also cover a wide range of genres and decades: from action and fantasy to dramas and romantic comedy, from the late 1970s to today. Taken together, the chapters of Screening Images of American Masculinity in the AgeofPostfeminism interrogate "the possible" screened in popular movies and television series, confronting the multiple and competing visions of masculinity not after or beyond feminism but, rather, in its very wake.

We have applied a waveform cross correlation technique to study the similarity and the repeatability of more than 21,000 microearthquakes (0 < M < 4.5) in the aftershock zone of the 1984 western ...Nagano earthquake in central Japan. We find that the seismicity in this particular intraplate fault essentially consists of no repeating earthquakes that occurred on the same patch of the fault in a quasiperiodic manner in the study period between 1995 and 2001. On the other hand, we identify a total of 278 doublets and 62 multiplets (807 events) that occurred consecutively within seconds to days. On the basis of the relative arrival times of the P and S waves, we have obtained precise relative locations of these consecutive events with an error between several meters to a few tens of meters. There is a clear lower bound on the distances measured between these consecutive events and the lower bound appears to be proportional to the size of the first events. This feature is consistent with what Rubin and Gillard 2000 have observed near the San Juan Bautista section of the San Andreas Fault. Shear stress increases at the edge of an earthquake rupture, and the rupture edge becomes the most likely place where the second events are initiated. The observed minimum distance thus reflects the rupture size of the first events. The minimum distance corresponds to the rupture size calculated from a circular fault model with a stress drop of 10 MPa. We found that using different time windows results in a slight difference in the delay time estimates and the subsequent projection locations, which may reflect the finite size nature of earthquake ruptures.
Yes, but abstract investigations are no less productive. Should we live on Mars? Absurd questions inspire absurd responses. Architects don’t make buildings, we envision the future and find ways to ...bring others along. Satire brings criticism, but can also open wormholes to new design thinking. Imaginative practice is practice for imagination. Stay sharp, the future is coming. This thesis engages in a new methodology to create collaborative, imaginative work around the idea of settlement on Mars. By parodying and restructuring the design process, using poetry as a tool and science fiction as an identity, this work intends to inject different perspectives into this exciting opportunity as it approaches reality, maintaining that design is improved when vision is replaced by conversation.
