The detailed source rupture process of the
M
7.3 event (April 16, 2016, 01:25, JST) of the 2016 Kumamoto, Japan, earthquakes was derived from strong-motion waveforms using multiple-time-window linear ...waveform inversion. Based on the observations of surface ruptures, the spatial distribution of aftershocks, and the geodetic data, a realistic curved fault model was developed for source-process analysis of this event. The seismic moment and maximum slip were estimated as 5.5 × 10
19
Nm (
M
w
7.1) and 3.8 m, respectively. The source model of the
M
7.3 event had two significant ruptures. One rupture propagated toward the northeastern shallow region at 4 s after rupture initiation and continued with large slips to approximately 16 s. This rupture caused a large slip region 10–30 km northeast of the hypocenter that reached the caldera of Mt. Aso. Another rupture propagated toward the surface from the hypocenter at 2–6 s and then propagated toward the northeast along the near surface at 6–10 s. A comparison with the result of using a single fault plane model demonstrated that the use of the curved fault model led to improved waveform fit at the stations south of the fault. The source process of the
M
6.5 event (April 14, 2016, 21:26, JST) was also estimated. In the source model obtained for the
M
6.5 event, the seismic moment was 1.7 × 10
18
Nm (
M
w
6.1), and the rupture with large slips propagated from the hypocenter to the surface along the north-northeast direction at 1–6 s. The results in this study are consistent with observations of the surface ruptures.

ABSTRACT
Comets are seen as depleted in nitrogen compared to the protosolar value, but a small number exhibit significantly higher than typical N2/CO ratios: C/1908 R1 (Morehouse), C/1940 R2 ...(Cunningham), C/1947 S1 (Bester), C/1956 R1 (Arend–Roland), C/1957 P1 (Mrkos), C/1961 R1 (Humason), C/1969 Y1 (Bennett), C/1973 E1 (Kohoutek), C/1975 V1-A (West), C/1986 P1 (Wilson), C/1987 P1 (Bradfield), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR), C/2016 R2 (PanSTARRS), and periodic comets 1P/Halley, 29P/Schwassmann–Wachmann 1, and 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. This study examines the composition and dynamical histories of these N2-‘rich’ comets to unearth insights into their formation processes. Using updated N2 fluorescence factors, we re-estimate the N2/CO ratios of this sample and find that they are consistent with the expected values for comets based on estimations of the protosolar nebula. These also often display larger nucleus sizes and show rapid tail morphology variations due to their ionic nature. Numerical simulations reveal no common dynamical history, suggesting that the N2/CO ratio is independent of the number of inner Solar System passages and that N2 is homogeneously distributed within these comets. These volatile-rich comets share an Oort Cloud origin which is consistent with their survival over the past 4.5 Gyr. Our study also suggests that there may be a bias using modern high-resolution spectrometers with narrow slits, which could potentially overlook the ion tail of comets. We advocate for the use of long-slit spectroscopy to potentially detect a wider range of N2-rich comets, thereby enriching our understanding of comet compositions and origins.
Klebsiella pneumoniae
sequence type (ST) 307 is an emerging global antimicrobial drug–resistant clone. We used whole-genome sequencing and PCR to characterize
K. pneumoniae
ST307 with oxacillinase ...(OXA) 181 carbapenemase across several private hospitals in South Africa during 2014–2016. The South Africa ST307 belonged to a different clade (clade VI) with unique genomic characteristics when compared with global ST307 (clades I–V). Bayesian evolution analysis showed that clade VI emerged around March 2013 in Gauteng Province, South Africa, and then evolved during 2014 into 2 distinct lineages.
K. pneumoniae
ST307 clade VI with OXA-181 disseminated over a 15-month period within 42 hospitals in 23 cities across 6 northeastern provinces, affecting 350 patients. The rapid expansion of ST307 was most likely due to intrahospital, interhospital, intercity, and interprovince movements of patients. This study highlights the importance of molecular surveillance for tracking emerging antimicrobial clones.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in partnership with several federal agencies, has developed and released four National Land Cover Database (NLCD) products over the past two decades: NLCD 1992, ...2001, 2006, and 2011. These products provide spatially explicit and reliable information on the Nation’s land cover and land cover change. To continue the legacy of NLCD and further establish a long-term monitoring capability for the Nation’s land resources, the USGS has designed a new generation of NLCD products named NLCD 2016. The NLCD 2016 design aims to provide innovative, consistent, and robust methodologies for production of a multi-temporal land cover and land cover change database from 2001 to 2016 at 2–3-year intervals. Comprehensive research was conducted and resulted in developed strategies for NLCD 2016: a streamlined process for assembling and preprocessing Landsat imagery and geospatial ancillary datasets; a multi-source integrated training data development and decision-tree based land cover classifications; a temporally, spectrally, and spatially integrated land cover change analysis strategy; a hierarchical theme-based post-classification and integration protocol for generating land cover and change products; a continuous fields biophysical parameters modeling method; and an automated scripted operational system for the NLCD 2016 production. The performance of the developed strategies and methods were tested in twenty World Reference System-2 path/row throughout the conterminous U.S. An overall agreement ranging from 71% to 97% between land cover classification and reference data was achieved for all tested area and all years. Results from this study confirm the robustness of this comprehensive and highly automated procedure for NLCD 2016 operational mapping.
Abstract
I study whether exposure to teacher stereotypes, as measured by the Gender-Science Implicit Association Test, affects student achievement. I provide evidence that the gender gap in math ...performance, defined as the score of boys minus the score of girls in standardized tests, substantially increases when students are assigned to math teachers with stronger gender stereotypes. Teacher stereotypes induce girls to underperform in math and self-select into less demanding high schools, following the track recommendation of their teachers. These effects are at least partially driven by lower self-confidence on math ability of girls exposed to gender-biased teachers. Stereotypes impair the test performance of girls, who end up failing to achieve their full potential. I do not detect statistically significant effects on student outcomes of literature teacher stereotypes.
The 2016–2017 Central Italy seismic sequence ruptured overlapping normal faults of the Apennines mountain chain, in nine earthquakes with magnitude Mw > 5 within a few months. Here we investigate the ...structure of the fault system using an extensive aftershock data set, from joint permanent and temporary seismic networks, and 3‐D Vp and Vp/Vs velocity models. We show that mainshocks nucleated on gently west dipping planes that we interpret as inverted steep ramps inherited from the late Pliocene compression. The two large shocks, the 24 August, Mw = 6.0 Amatrice and the 30 October, Mw = 6.5 Norcia occurred on distinct faults reactivated by high pore pressure at the footwall, as indicated by positive Vp/Vs anomalies. The lateral extent of the overpressurized volume includes the fault patch of the Norcia earthquake. The irregular geometry of normal faults together with the reactivated ramps leads to the kinematic complexity observed during the coseismic ruptures and the spatial distribution of aftershocks.
Plain Language Summary
In this study we present refined earthquake locations and tomographic images of the upper crust to investigate the mechanisms of the 2016 Amatrice and Norcia destructive earthquakes. We find that earthquakes ruptured distinct segments of the fault system, partially reutilizing preexisting faults inherited from the previous compressional phase. Overpressurized fluids within the carbonate rocks facilitate the reactivation of faults during the large ruptures.
Key Points
The two large shocks of Amatrice and Norcia nucleated on distinct and parallel faults reactivated by high pore pressure in the footwall
The irregular geometry of normal faults and reactivated ramps feeds in the complexity observed during coseismic ruptures and aftershocks
Rapid definition of overpressurized volumes along the fault system has implications for the a priori identification of nucleation locations
Around hundred landslides were triggered by the Kumamoto earthquakes in April 2016, causing fatalities and serious damage to properties in Minamiaso village, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The ...landslides included many rapid and long-runout landslides which were responsible for much of the damage. To understand the mechanism of these earthquake-triggered landslides, we carried out field investigations with an unmanned aerial vehicle to obtain DSM and took samples from two major landslides (Takanodai landslide and Aso-ohashi landslide) to measure parameters of the initiation and the motion of landslides. A series of ring-shear tests and computer simulations were conducted using a measured Kumamoto earthquake acceleration record from KNet station KMM005, 10 km west of Aso-ohashi landslide. The research results supported our assumed mechanism of sliding-surface liquefaction for the rapid and long-runout motion of these landslides.
Asteroid 2016 HO3 is the first of the two small bodies in the Solar System targeted by the Chinese Small Body Exploration Mission scheduled to be launched in the next few years. In this paper, we ...perform a full numerical simulation of a possible onboard radio science experiment to obtain the GM value of this tiny asteroid with a relative accuracy of ~10%. At such an accuracy, the GM value can be used to constrain the internal structure of the asteroid. We demonstrate that such an accuracy can be achieved through a joint estimation of the GM value and the ephemeris of the asteroid by using ground-based and onboard (spacecraft-asteroid) radiometric tracking data.

In this study, joint inversions of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Global Position System (GPS) measurements are used to investigate the source parameters of four Mw > 5 events of the 2016–2017 ...Central Italy earthquake sequence. The results show that the four events are all associated with a normal fault striking northwest–southeast and dipping southwest. The observations, in all cases, are consistent with slip on a rupture plane, with strike in the range of 157° to 164° and dip in the range of 39° to 44° that penetrates the uppermost crust to a depth of 0 to 8 km. The primary characteristics of these four events are that the 24 August 2016 Mw 6.2 Amatrice earthquake had pronounced heterogeneity of the slip distribution marked by two main slip patches, the 26 October 2016 Mw 6.1 Visso earthquake had a concentrated slip at 3–6 km, and the predominant slip of the 30 October 2016 Mw 6.6 Norcia earthquake occurred on the fault with a peak magnitude of 2.5 m at a depth of 0–6 km, suggesting that the rupture may have reached the surface, and the 18 January 2017 Mw 5.7 Campotosto earthquake had a large area of sliding at depth 3–9 km. The positive static stress changes on the fault planes of the latter three events demonstrate that the 24 August 2016 Amatrice earthquake may have triggered a cascading failure of earthquakes along the complex normal fault system in Central Italy.
