The development, operationalisation and evaluation of educational standards has become an important task for educational scientists and linguistic researchers in any modern educational system. This ...article outlines the necessary steps, and attendant pitfalls, of such a process by taking the development work performed in Switzerland in the context of foreign language education as a point of reference. It argues that in order to fulfil their function, educational standards need to be backed by a well-founded theoretical model of the latent variable at stake. The next step is a rigorously controlled process of item development coupled with a representative validation study. Finally, the article shows that without rich and varied empirical data from a representative sample, discussing minimal or maximum standards is a fruitless exercise.
Can one acquire one or more foreign languages equally well at any age? From the perspective of cognitive neuroscience, this article takes stock of the current situation. In this context, the ...limitations and possibilities of the imaging methods used today to examine brain structures and functions are discussed. In summary, from the point of view of brain research it can be said that the ability to learn foreign languages decreases over the course of one’s life, which can be explained both by processes of maturation (specialisation) and degradation (dedifferentiation). However, future research in this area will have to give greater weight to individual aspects and focus on the use of longitudinal models and innovative statistical models.
Zwei Fremdsprachen ab der Primarstufe, die Festlegung von GER-Niveaus in den Lehrplänen, eine koordinierte Sprachendidaktik, die Förderung von Austausch und Mobilität: Das Gesamtsprachenkonzept für ...den Sprachunterricht in der Schweiz (sog. „Lüdi-Bericht“) diente den Kantonen als Arbeitsgrundlage und hatte Einfluss auf die Erarbeitung der Sprachenstrategie von 2004 bis hin zu den Empfehlungen von 2017. Zwanzig Jahre nach der Erstellung des Berichts stehen mittlerweile auch neuere Erkenntnisse und Instrumente zur Verfügung, mit deren Hilfe sich der Sprachunterricht in der Schweiz weiter verbessern lässt.

Andreas Neeser, *1964 im Kanton Aargau, studierte Germanistik, Anglistik und Literaturkritik an der Universität Zürich. 2003-2011 Aufbau und Leitung des Aargauer Literaturhauses Lenzburg. Langjährige ...Tätigkeit als Deutschlehrer am Gymnasium. Für sein vielfältiges literarisches Werk wurde Andreas Neeser mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen bedacht. 2018 erschien zudem das Lehrmittel «Fokus Schreiben» (hep verlag), ein Schreib-Lehrmittel für die Sekundarstufe II, für die Fachhochschule oder für das Selbststudium. Der hier abgedruckte Text ist ein Auszug aus dem vom deutschsprachigen Feuilleton hoch gelobten Bretagne-Roman «Zwischen zwei Wassern» (Haymon Verlag, 2014).
Soll die Priorisierung der Landessprachen während der obligatorischen Schulzeit im Namen des nationalen Zusammenhalts im Bundesrecht verankert werden? Oder verstösst dies gegen das ...Subsidiaritätsprinzip, eines der Kernelemente der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft? Seit den Anfängen des Bundesgesetzes über die Landessprachen und die Verständigung zwischen den Sprachgemeinschaften (SpG), das im Jahr 2010 in Kraft getreten ist, wird dieses Thema regelmässig diskutiert. Die Frage einer bundesweiten Regelung der Landessprachen geht auf die Ursprünge der Schweizer Verfassung zurück. Eine Reise in die Geschichte dieser sensiblen Debatte.

Vent’anni fa Sandro Bianconi descrisse con chiarezza cristallina e senza peli sulla lingua quale sorte sarebbe toccata all’italiano nelle scuole svizzero-tedesche e romande con l’attuazione di un ...concetto globale delle lingue sviluppato a scapito – e non a sostegno – della terza lingua nazionale. Tracceremo qui un quadro della situazione nei diversi gradi scolastici, scusandoci presso il lettore italofono di pubblicarlo in tedesco, sapendo (logica perversa) che se pubblichiamo in italiano non saremo letti, e tuttavia se ci esprimiamo in tedesco la maggioranza linguistica non sentirà il bisogno di imparare l’italiano, dacché “die Italienischschprochige chönd jo sowieso Franz oder Tütsch”.
