Systematic reviews (SRs) are an important source of information about healthcare interventions. A key component of a well-conducted SR is a comprehensive literature search. There is limited evidence ...on the contribution of non-English reports, unpublished studies, and dissertations and their impact on results of meta-analyses.
Our sample included SRs from three Cochrane Review Groups: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), Infectious Diseases (ID), Developmental Psychosocial and Learning Problems (DPLP) (n = 129). Outcomes included: 1) proportion of reviews that searched for and included each study type; 2) proportion of relevant studies represented by each study type; and 3) impact on results and conclusions of the primary meta-analysis for each study type.
Most SRs searched for non-English studies; however, these were included in only 12% of reviews and represented less than 5% of included studies. There was a change in results in only four reviews (total sample = 129); in two cases the change did not have an impact on the statistical or clinical significance of results. Most SRs searched for unpublished studies but the majority did not include these (only 6%) and they represented 2% of included studies. In most cases the impact of including unpublished studies was small; a substantial impact was observed in one case that relied solely on unpublished data. Few reviews in ARI (9%) and ID (3%) searched for dissertations compared to 65% in DPLP. Overall, dissertations were included in only nine SRs and represented less than 2% of included studies. In the majority of cases the change in results was negligible or small; in the case where a large change was noted, the estimate was more conservative without dissertations.
The majority of SRs searched for non-English and unpublished studies; however, these represented a small proportion of included studies and rarely impacted the results and conclusions of the review. Inclusion of these study types may have an impact in situations where there are few relevant studies, or where there are questionable vested interests in the published literature. We found substantial variation in whether SRs searched for dissertations; in most reviews that included dissertations, these had little impact on results.

The prospect of writing a thesis is considered daunting by many but the task is a requisite when embarking into reading for any academic degree. A thesis is a written document following personal ...research. It is performed to obtain an academic degree or qualification, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. When writing a thesis, it is imperative that the student follows the universal well-acknowledged structure format known as “IMRAD”: i.e. Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. A summary of the thesis, known as the ‘Abstract’, is placed at the beginning of the “IMRAD”, while all references cited in the thesis are placed at the very end. The thesis format is similar to a research manuscript prepared for publication in scientific journal, but there are significant differences between the two types of academic works. For example, the liberal use of graphical aides in the form of figures and/or tables enhances the delivery of results. It is essential to ensure that all the literature referred to in the thesis is cited, while paying particular attention to potential plagiarism. When writing a thesis, the student needs to keep in mind three factors: 1 the structure, 2 the substance and 3 the style. Once the student has developed a good plan for thesis layout, then writing becomes greatly faciliated.
ABSTRACT Objective: to highlight the methodological approach used in thesis/dissertations for constructing and validating protocols in the Nursing area. Method: a literature review was performed ...online at the Library of the Center for Study and Research in Nursing, and at the Thesis Databank of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel. Eight theses and 16 dissertations were included in the final sample. Results: it was found that the most common steps in constructing protocols were reviewing the scientific literature and using professionals to assist in this process. In studies related to protocol validation, the presence of groups of specialists/judges on the subject matter ranging from three to 16 in quantity was found, with the majority presenting up to ten judges. Regarding analysis of the validation process, we noticed a higher prevalence of agreement between the judges and the Content Validity Index. Conclusion: development of this type of technology constitutes a complex and multifaceted area, adapted to researchers’ expectations and objectives.

The present study aims to reveal the structure of positions in the field of addiction through the analysis of doctoral theses read in Spain. The source consulted for the selection of the theses was ...TESEO. Searching for the keywords drug abuse, alcoholism, drug effects and drug addiction treatment during the period 1976-2017 produced 728 theses. The most productive period is 2013-2017, with 208 (28.6%) doctoral theses. The overall rate of publication is increasing, but in the period 2003-2007 output decreased significantly to 5.2% of the total. The university contributing the most theses is the University of Valencia. The academic who has supervised the most theses is Alfonso Velasco Martín, and Emilio Ambrosio Flores is the researcher who has participated most on examining committees. The analysis of the participants in the doctoral thesis process shows a gradual increase of women in authorship, in thesis supervision and as examiners. In terms of subject, the most frequently treated aspects are those related to psychology, pharmacology and medical sciences. The analysis of doctoral theses on substance abuse provides an overview of the structure and the most influential participants in this area. Increasing public concern and the creation of specific groups and research units are reflected in the growth of scientific output.
Objective: To describe the characteristics of under-graduate theses, satisfaction and reasons for choosing a topic of study. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study that included two ...populations, theses and thesis students who were able to support their work from 2015 to 2021 in the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Lima, Peru). Documentary analysis was used at first to record bibliometric data. The survey was used in a second stage to collect information related to the reasons why the thesis students chose their topic and the degree of satisfaction. Results: A total of 269 theses were examined. The theses corresponded to more women (n=142; 52.8%). All had a quantitative approach. The cross-sectional/descriptive design was the most frequent (n=207; 77%). Of the 114 respondents, the majority of them indicated that their thesis topic decision was influenced by a faculty member outside of their advisor (n= 26; 22.8%). A total of 49.1% of thesis students were in complete agreement about what they had learned about research at the end of their thesis. Conclusions: The undergraduate theses evidenced to be developed mainly by women, most of the thesis students were satisfied with the elaboration and execution of their academic work; it was evidenced that the thesis topics are mainly influenced by a teacher different from the thesis advisor, this indicates that the advisors should be more conscious when guiding the student and influencing the thematic, methodological and writing decisions together with the advised.
